I hope it gets at least a 2.4X on the WW numbers from this point at least.

Nope, not that I can find. I think the domestic numbers are only up for Friday, which was $36m.

No, very serious. I thought it be at a billion already. Such a shame. This probably means no Thor 3.

The $327m number would be for the weekend worldwide I believe. It includes the est. for the domestic weekend.

You're right. Franchise is doomed. Marvel Studios is just embarrassing themselves at this point. Better to close up shop on the whole MCU.

Probably for the best. Don't even finish TWS or GotG. Pointless really.

And AoU? That's gonna bomb. MS should just leave the making of movies to other studios who actually know how to make movies. Damn upstarts!

Monumental start for such a third-tier Marvel character who I had doubts about being marketable just 2.5 years ago lol.

Well they might be able to break even with the Avengers flicks. Might think about making one or two of those still, same with IM.

$86.1M for the weekend. I was hoping for more but this is completely solid. They made up that extra $20M in the budget already with how much this opened bigger than Thor1.

Thor - TDW had a bigger opening than avengers in china

At the rate at how marvel studios is making 2nd & 3rd tier superheros household names..... even Howard the duck will gross 100s of million dollars if marvel put their mind to it

Strange to say this, but we live in an age where Thor is roughly as popular as Superman, Captain America is roughly as popular as Wolverine, and Iron Man is the most popular superhero in the world. Marvel Studios has done a bang up job selling their brand.

86mil is a very good number and it has next weekend to itself. The panic over it not making 100mil was silly and still is silly if anyone is disappointed.

And this is all with a budget of around $170m, right? I would call that a success.

Yes I did, I thought it was fun but it's nothing special. It's a made by committee cotton candy Disney movie and thus didn't stick to my bones. That sounds harsh but I can't explain it any other way.

I just thought that there were memorable things in Iron Man 3 little and big touches that showed me Shane Black was trying to do and say something interesting. I didn't get that in this film. It doesn't feel important in any way and it didn't have the heart that I felt Captain America and Iron Man had.

It depends how you look at it. In many ways, Iron Man 3 functioned as a sequel to the Avengers at the box office.

If you look at Thor in terms of growth from Thor 1 to Thor 2? The opening is successful. If you look at it in terms of "% of people who saw Avengers, and decided Thor was a character they liked enough to give another shot at the box office" it's kind of pitiful. Where as Iron Man 3 retained 83% of the Avengers opening weekend crowd, Thor failed to retain even half.

It just shows what a large gap there is between Downey's Iron Man and everyone else, and that Marvel Studios is not quite as synonymous with Box office smashes as I hoped. If The MCU's #2 can barely muster $200 M domestic, what does that say for Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man?

I hope it's okay to post this; I'm new enough to not be sure of the rules here re quoting. But I found this very interesting. The whole article is interesting in fact. From forbes.com:

Quote:
In a somewhat surprising turn, Disney’s Thor: The Dark World earned $86.11 million over its first weekend. I say surprising because of how comparatively not front loaded it turned out to be. Thor: The Dark World earned 8% of its weekend figure from Thursday grosses, which is far less than Iron Man 3 ($15.6m/$174m) and identical to The Avengers, which scored both of which scored 9% of its weekend figure via Thursday midnight grosses ($18.75m/$207m). It also set an opening weekend record of sorts for Marvel, pulling in the least front-loaded Friday-Sunday debut weekend of any of their films, for a franchise-high 2.7x weekend multiplier. Every single Marvel Studios movie has pulled just over/under 2.5x for the weekend, with the vast majority hitting right around 2.5x. So the fact that Thor: The Dark World pulled off a 2.73x weekend multiplier is noteworthy as its the largest weekend multiplier out of eight Marvel films, besting Iron Man‘s 2.6x multiplier ($38m/$102m). Despite being easily the most fantastical and sci-fi of the Marvel films thus far, it played like a mainstream action picture.
Forbes also notes that it played 38% female, due largely to the "eye candy" provided by Hemsworth, Hiddleston, etc. and Hiddleston's vastly increased popularity over the last two years.
