Ranked in order of personal enjoyment of the film-watching experience as a whole:

Man of Steel
Superman II (Lester's over Donner)
Superman Returns
Superman III & IV

I cannot rank STM. Partly because of how much I appreciate what it helped create and what it left behind, which becomes conflicting because I don't enjoy the film all that much. It is very much one of those movie experiences I completely feel like spacing out for a good deal of its runtime, but I cannot deny the overwhelmingly good things in it. Place it at the top of the list, or at the bottom, it makes no difference to me.

Honourable mention: Superman & The Mole-Men, which I enjoy a lot, but it has a completely different approach to comic book movies to stand with the rest.

Having said that, if animated stuff counts, "Superman VS The Elite" is -in my opinion- the best Superman movie we have ever got.

Default Re: Rank the Superman films

1) Superman the movie (only by a fraction, hey I was 8 when I saw it, and it was the most amazing thing since Star Wars, which came out the year before). The only thing wrong with it is the ending...but hey, it was so awesome seeing Superman on the big screen, we let that one go.

2) Man of Steel, only a fraction less awesome than SMTM, Superman had to get a bit more serious and involve a bit more property damage to be credible in the 21st century, sorry it ain't 1978 anymore. Total Super-awesomeness, and a way better ending than SMTM.

3) Superman II, good attempt for a Superman vs actual Supervillains, and back in
1980 it was hillarious, and thrilling. "Kneel before Zod." come on, who can't love that ?

4) Superman IV, yes it was crap, but that was due to its execution. The underlying premise, that Superman shouldn't get involved in politics has a lot of merit, a lot more than this film deserved. And also, Superman moved the moon, that's always cool. (although it probably would have triggered Tsunami's everywhere...anyway).

5) Superman III, not good at all. Mostly because some idiot studio exec thought,
hmmmm...Superman isn't cool enough by himself, we'll throw that coke-head Richard Pryor in there to make him even cooler. Now Richard Pryor is one of the great 20th century comedians, but come on, he doesn't belong in a Superman film. And Robert Vaughn as a second rate Lex Luthor ?

6) Superman returns.......bottom of the barrel. My main reason for intensely disliking this movie is that at one point Superman, who has super-human senses and is the son of the smartest scientist of a super-advanced race, is ****ing stupid enough to land on a continent that's mostly made up of the one substance in the universe THAT CAN ****ING KILL HIM ????!!!!! The rest of the film with Supes moping around looking a bit bemused is only mildly tolerable - the other big sin of this movie is they tried to re-make a Chris Reeve Superman film, without Chris Reeve, it was never going to work. Unlike Superman turning back the world at the end of SMTM, you can't turn the clock back to 1978. For that reason, it is the worst Superman movie of all time, ever.

great thread BTW. (oh, if animated stuff counts, then All Star Superman goes in there after MOS but way before Superman II )

Am I the only one on here who has seen the Kirk Alyn serials? No one else has mentioned them.

Haven't seen enough of them to rate them. I have liked what I have seen, but I'd rate them about the same as Superman & The Mole-Men: fun, but a completely different approach to super-hero adaptations.

I believe there has been many flaws with the Superman films. None of them have really delivered the whole package or at least most of it.

Man of Steel - I just can't watch another Superman film the same after seeing MOS.

Superman 2

Superman The Movie - I'm surprised that this film is this low for me. But after watching recent comic films and recently MOS, I'm not show what the film was about. I sensed no struggle from Clark or Superman.

Superman vs the Elite - I like this film only for the lesson it provides. But this is a narrow version of Superman. And a bit extreme in terms of trying to remain the boy scout status.

Superman Returns - This film just wanders on and on until it ends. It has a story that makes sense but it was boring, unoriginal, wooden characters all over. No real emotion.

Superman 3 /4

All Star Superman - Don't like it.

Well actually if you sit back and think about it, some parts of Superman II the Donner Cut just don't make sense....

Man of Steel (Best Superman movie from a action stand point) most of the things I don't like I accept (costume's dark color pallet and lack of underroos)

Yeah very true but I think it's better than regular II and I overall enjoy them much more than Returns

Agreed. Like I always wondered why he went back to the diner to beat the piss out of that trucker after he turned back time....none of the previous events ever happened so that trucker wouldn't know who Clark is!

What I find even weirder is that after Superman turned back time someone stopped both of the missiles and saved Jimmy while Superman was talking to Lois.

Superman The Movie - grew up with this flying scenes are still better than MOS
Man Of Steel - improve flying scenes for next film, but emotional core good
Superman 3 - supes vs clark still great comic book stuff and flying is good
Superman 2/ Superman 2 DC - needs a good reedit combining both to put it above supes3
Superman 4 - know what they were trying to do but executed badly
Superman Returns - Plane rescue then what for the next hour and a half? not to mention brown colours come on!
