I don't know how they got that money. It is not a film you watch multiple times to "get it". 2 at best so a logical explanation is the female audience who crave RDJ's looks + the buzz from the Avengers....but still they don't really cover a billion.

There's no trend. With the Avengers hype still in the air it'd make sense for it to clear 750-800M, maybe make it to 1B if things went well. However, it exploded, over preforming by a long shot.
I'm curious how many people actually prefer the third of the first.
I'm convinced there is a good amount of people that went to im3 ready for either avengers 2 or the continuation of that particular storyline. Marvel is smart, they don't just sell "Avengers buzz". They sell story continuation and when you are facing an growing social media audience that doesn't want to miss a thing or miss out...they almost have to tune in(at first). Just look at the Shield show situation. Look at the marketing for that thing, look at the records the premiere had...Now marvel is teasing a thor2 continuation on that show, I can already predict how the ratings will look on that day.
It's the same EXACT reason people are sitting through their movie credits now, not wanting to miss on the story continuation.
And now people are suggesting WB do something completely different? No, all their projects will reap the benefits of coming off of their event.

Would have been interesting if marvel released thor 2 before im3. Considering tony starred in avengers as opposed to hemsworth I'm sure the results would be telling, then again there is the loki factor.

I think Iron Man 3 got a boost because of kids. There was a lot more kids in my theater watching Iron Man 3 than Iron Man 1 or 2. That's where the Avengers effect may have been the greatest.

I think kids give and will continue to give all the post-Avengers Marvel movies a boost.

I did notice A LOT more kids in Thor: The Dark World than in Iron Man 3 and that's saying something.

I had a whole row of kids in my thor2 screening. My wolverine screening had none(that I could see).

Doesn't surprise me. Marvel is very kid-friendly and probably even targeted towards them. Kids bring the money.

Surprised to see a lot more kids at MOS than at The Wolverine. There were hardly any at The Wolverine and yet, opening day was packed with kids for MOS.

Thor's second weekend is being predicted as something similar to mos' second weekend.

One might argue this is a sign of quality but there is def something to be said for second weekend competition. I mean what comes out this weekend?
Marvel was kinda smart to not open this next to hunger games money, however if they were smarter they would have opened a few weeks ago, cause the hunger is coming.

WOM is going to make or break this one. I'm hoping it does Age of Ultron numbers.

I'm closing in on getting my 75x75 avatar so I will comment, despite the fact that Jokes' thread has all this covered plus so much more. (It does actually, no sarcasm intended.)

I think there's a solid basis for realistic optimism that this film will be a smash. If it is roughly as good as The Avengers in terms of how well crafted it is, and the overall entertainment it provides, then it will do somewhere around 1.5 billion.

There are rumors (or actually it is a direct comment from Roven in an interview, IIRC) that we can expect an extended cut of the film (not four hours as was joked in the interview, but significantly longer than 2:35). If the general release of the film is great to begin with, and an extended cut is given a theater release as well next summer... man, I don't know... As inconceivable as it might sound, it could even knock Avatar off its perch. That would be a perfect storm, though. I.e., the general release kicks ass, and we get an extended cut theater release.

If the film is just very good fun at the movies, with no extended cut theater release, then 1.1 to 1.4 billion.
