350-500 million.

Oh, and what's up with pysockolussus? Seriously, his posts on the previous page barely make any sense.

Seriously?

-August release date
-Obscure comic-book characters
-Blockbuster fatigue happening in late July/August
-None of the lead characters were part of The Avengers

Yeah I'm wrong with my reasons and this movie will perform like Gravity, next year. Anyway, most of you think this movie will do well just because its from Marvel Studios.

honestly this movie is a huge risk....but a welcomed one for me. 500M is probably accurate. this will probably be a late bloomer hit wise.... people will watch it and if it's good they will say OMG this was amazing.... it will gain money and popularity by Blu-ray release and then it's sequel make a ton of money

IF, it's good.

I think the best example of what we can hope for GoTG is Rise of the Planet of the Apes run from 2011. Similar grosses would be perfectly acceptable.

I'm saying 400-500million and that would be awesome for such an obscure franchise. Can't wait for the first trailer!

I am going to be honest with you, i dont know much about these characters and i dont think the general movie-going audience does either. I just dont see how its going to make the big bucks it going to need to be considered a success. The fact is the tie-ins to the avengers world isnt going to be enough to make this a winner. Sorry thats just how i see it.

That's pretty much a non-argument. A property doesn't have to be already famous to make money.

I couldn't care less if a talking Raccoon outgrosses Wolverine and the X-Men. Its not going to be the first time, a movie featuring a talking animal will outgross a X-Men movie. So it has nothing to do with me giving low box-office prediction to GOTG.

I think Guardians Of The Galaxy will be the super hero movie that this latter incarnation of George Lucas would have made. LOL.

I think the movie will make some money back but not enough to get a sequel.

after seeing the Thor mid-credit teaser, I'm dropping my prediction to $150 M domestic, and $190 M foreign.

This is what I keep saying.

The way some people think that something has the be well known in order to make money is why WB only makes Batman and Superman movies.

I think it will hit right around 500m. Give or take maybe so I chose the 500m+ category. If it turns out good then yes it should hit it. If the movie isn't so hot then it won't make this money. I have hopes that it will be made quite well. We shall see though!

Not to burst any bubbles but if CA:WS is a direct tie in for Avengers 2 what will be the purpose for the GA to watch this movie? None of these characters were on phase 1, so for the GA they are obscure. And GotG wont have any tie ins up until A3, several years from now. I just don't see this movie doing good at all. A week after its release we have, I believe from the top of head, Rio 2 a kids movie. Hope I am wrong but I consider myself a comic book fan and I just don't look up to this movie like I did with IM3, Thor 2 and CA:WS. Thats me, imagine the GA who has never heard of GotG!

This is what I see too. Marvel might have been better off to ride on the Avengers success and should've done a Hulk movie. Look at IM3 and Thor:TDW riding off the Avengers (although I think Thor was better than IM). GA seemed to love the Hulk after the Avengers.

What is the purpose of anyone watching any movie?

Pretty much all comic characters are obscure to the GA. As I said before, a film being an unknown property to the GA doesn't mean box office failure. Avatar? Inception? Pirates of the Caribbean? Jurassic Park? Star Wars? Though it's certainly an argument people like to toss out.

That's a very odd reason to decide it won't do well.

Rio 2 comes out in April, after CATWS.
GotG is followed by Ninja Turtles, Expendables 3 & Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in August.

The GA has no idea this film even exists, as far as they're concerned there's nothing to look forward to because they don't follow this s*** like we do. It's still 9 months away and won't really pop up on their radar for another 6 or 8. At least wait until Marvel start actually promoting the film before deciding people aren't interested.

Well clearly this move isn't motivated by money. They just want to make it because they like the Guardians & think a film would be really cool. If it breaks out then that's icing on the cake, but financially they're well covered by the Avengers.

The promotion for this movie hasn't even kicked into high gear yet, not even mid or low gear. The only people who are aware that this movie's coming out are geeks like us on the message board and other movie buffs.

Thor gave it a little exposure, sure. But with the right trailer, and maybe with the Super Bowl, awareness of this movie will grow I'm sure.

I think tonally it'll set itself apart from the other superhero movies coming out next year. And it really does seem to be a James Gunn passion project, almost more than it is a Marvel movie.

I'm thinking it could fall in the neighborhood of $190-200 domestic, and maybe $500 mil int'l. With the right promotional push.

I consider myself a huge comic book fan who wasn't at all excited about GOTG getting a movie, until they started announcing the director and cast. Now I'm anxiously checking any and all updates for the movie every day.

I guess we will see when it comes out who was right. Afterall, this thread will be here once the movie comes out. I hope I am wrong and I am freaking out just like I was when they announced Thor (1st movie) was coming out.

The worst thing Marvel can do is sit back and milk their Avengers cash cow until its dry, like Sony and FOX are currently doing that with their Marvel franchises. Those studios have seen a softening at the box office, especially domestically, and Feige and co. have to set up the studio to succeed after Downey, Hemsworth and Evans have put away their battle togs. To do so, Marvel has created or is in the process of creating:

Avengers - Earth based superhero all-star team
SHIELD - Earth based superspy agency.
Guardians - Space based adventurers
Defenders - NYC based street levels heroes

So they have Superhero, Spy, Space and Street teams and have Supernatural to go (Midnight Sons with Strange, Wanda, Blade and Ghost Rider?) as well as teen heroes (Runaways) and "born this way" heroes (Inhumans). The studio is taking on risk, but by diversifying their offerings they have put themselves in position to succeed long after the superhero film bubble has burst for their competitors.

In the coming months if all the marketing for this is done perfectly, I could see a worldwide gross of between $400-500 million. But, with this being a group full of people that aren't known, everything has to be on the level.

However, with Marvel's past success in taking characters that weren't all that known beyond comic book fans & making them popular, I wouldn't doubt them at all on their ability to make this a success.

I'm not expecting any radical numbers (like $600 million or over) unless this is amazingly, extraordinary, spectacularly epic.

$500 million seems a good number to start off with. It's very early though.

Like it or not, the studio logo alone will put people in the theatres. They are almost on the same level as Pixar now.
