I don't have any issues with the trade per say, but Moulson had scored 88 goals since the 2010 season, while Vanek put up 82 goals...

So I believe the trade should have simply been player-for-player... possibly ONE pick...

The fact that the Islanders gave up TWO picks makes it more one-sided for the Sabres... in MY opinion.

I have Vanek in one of my pools... so I hope it really works well for him.

I've got both Tavares and Vanek in my fantasy team, so I'm sitting pretty.

You can't just look at goals. Moulson, God bless him. is as one-dimensional of a player as they come. He's made a career out of picking up Tavares' garbage in front of the net, but he skates like he's stuck in concrete meaning the team hardly if ever generates anything on a rush with him out there, and is a big time defensive liability.

Vanek is a much better two player and actually creates offense. (the assist comparison isnt even close), and he's been doing it without a superstar like Tavares at center.

Was the second round pick next year too much? Perhaps. Then again it's hockey, and a lot of 2nd round picks never pan out. Would I also have liked to have gotten Miller in this deal? (and perhaps thrown Poulin back their way) Of course, but it didn't happen.

Hard to complain about a deal where you pick-up a star winger and give up zero of your highly-touted prospects.

Well, you follow this team, so you might have better insight than most of us in CanuckleLand... the consensus up here is that the Sabres got the better deal.

Sounds like Vanek might go to Minnesota after this season from the sounds of things... so hopefully the Islanders can wrap him up with a new contract.

"Let me tell ya somethin', Moulson, Matt Moulson, good Ontario boy. The Sabres walked away with that one."

"Well, Thomas Vanek is a fairly good player too ..."

"Hey, I'm talkin' here! Shaddup, ya' fancypants commie! No way is some Russian player worth more than a Canadian!"

"Actually, Thomas is from Austria."

"What? Austria? Did he grow up playing hockey with kangaroos? Listen, all you kids out there, you don't play hockey with marsupials!"

Pretty good I think, as long as he clicks with Tavares. It also helps that he's got a fellow Austrian on the team in Grabner.

Okay guys, the future of the Vancouver Canucks, whether it is good or bad, is now pretty much set for the next 4-5 years. Now make something happen in the playoffs!

Islanders beat Pittsburgh and Boston, lose to Buffalo and Philly. Strange first month of the season thus far.

Saw most of the game.

Damnit. The Canucks are out the first round again if they can be so consistently be beat by any of the good western teams, assuming they even make it to the playoffs at this point.

Will this big TV deal with the Canadian broadcasters eventually help out the rich teams like the Rangers, Flyers, Leafs, Red Wings, etc? Every team will get a share of the profits, but the more the cap raises down the road, the more it will probably favor the rich teams.

This Luongo-esque TV contract will result in fewer games on free TV and basic cable, and more on PPV services, I suspect.

Not sure how the revenue model of these deals work with the teams, but it will definitely be a boon to the Canadian clubs, and to the big market US teams as Sonic noted above. With the exception of Pittsburgh, I imagine it will be of less benefit to the smaller market teams in the Central and Metro divisions. The Pacific division teams in the US will benefit from high exposure in Western Canada.

I'm not a fan of this deal for two reasons...

1) the possibility of no more Don Cherry
2) at the end of the 12 year deal, there will be no viable competition to compete for a new TV deal, and we will all pay through the nose to watch our hockey

That's my fear too, but even further, I think we won't have to wait 12 years to have to pay more to watch hockey on a weekday. It will happen sooner.

It is really unfortunate that I have no ability to get streaming NHL games, it really is.

Each American team will get $14.5 million every season with the Rogers deal plus whatever they get from their NBC and local rights. The Canadian teams will get a little more than the $14.5 million.

So the rich will get richer and the weaker markets will get some help but the opportunity will be there for some teams to spend more and outbid teams for free agents. Gate revenue, local TV and anything additional such as owning the building will be the difference maker in some respects. Still teams have to draft and build their teams. There are always weaker market teams that draft and build well.

I don't like the deal because the talent at Sportsnet is unwatchable. I'm sure they'll hire the best from TSN and CBC.

The more I learn about this deal, the less I like it. Bettman's administration has been defined by making moves that are short-term gains but damage the NHL in the longer term, and I suspect this will be one of them.
