I noticed other than a few posts making fun of Kilmer, it's been pretty quiet in this thread the last couple of days, so I thought I would pop in here real quick just to say -
TRUNKS!!!

I am not picking on you MrsKent…it's just the idea that everything need to be explained is driving me crazy. Zack Snyder said he tried to make the trunks work on the new suit. If they did work I don't think there would have been an explanation for the trunks..other than this is my alien clothing.

If we look at the bat suit as being functional then quite a lot of parts of the suit would go away.

I don't mean a logical explanation for them in the film, a la Nolan, I was asking why Bathead wanted him to have them.

I like things being close to source material as possible. I am just congenitally that way. As I get older though, I have found I am much more accepting of alterations to things when it comes to these big franchise characters that take up a big part of our pop culture. Trunks, no trunks, just give me a good movie at this point.

Those pic of Kilmer are too funny!!! In the one where he's on the beach it looks like he has something on his chin and it looks gross...either that or he's spitting which is also gross. He should have done that in the water.

Back on topic...I can't wait until the first pics of the suit are released just because I can't wait to the see the fan reaction. Whatever it looks like..."no on" will be pleased I think.

If the whole thing about the suit being grey and black turns out to be true....I'm already pretty pleased.

I can't make up my mind on that. I like it in comics and cartoons, but I'm not sure if there is an appropriate "grey/gray" that works on film. I just think black looks better, but then again I haven't really seen a true gray/black suit in live action.

That's all it is.
Everybody's just so used to the all black suits.
I think it will be a little shocking/weird looking to people when they first see it for that reason, but it will grow on them.

I'm certain that this will be the best batsuit yet.

I am very surprised someone could think that gym enthusiasts are dumb or meat-heads. Some of the most in-shape people I know are also the most intelligent and intellectually superior people I know. A great mind and a great body are not mutually exclusive and in fact might go oftener hand in hand than people think.

Butler has an upcoming epic blockbuster role where he lays an Egyptian god. So he might be getting trim for that.

Interesting execution of lenses - they're the wrong colour and need to be a bit narrower, but it's the only time I've seen it done apart from Daredevil.

Simple. Because I think the suit looks better with them than without.

It depends on how the suit is.

If it's too technical, then they're not really necessary. They look off.

If it's basic, then yes. That's when they work best.

The AO costume wouldn't have worked with them.
The AA/AC suit wouldn't have worked without them.

I personally don't mind Batman having trunks, but I would prefer him without them.

While not everything about a costume needs to be explained Nolan-style or have a function to it, the trunks are without a doubt the least important/functional part of a superhero's costume. If you were to make a list of everything in Batman's suit and were forced to get rid of the thing you see as the least important, most people would go with the trunks (even the pro-trunks group).

I get the impression that people think getting rid of the trunks is an attempt to "modernize" a costume or to "add realism" or to "not embrace the comics" or things among those lines. I don't see it as that. I see it as a natural thing that was going to go away on its own regardless of how classic or true-to-the-source-material things stay. In my opinion, trunks are to superheroes what tails are to human beings - a leftover trace of a previous era.

As Snyder said, the trunks are "dated" in the sense that they come from the Victorian era. However, trunks disappeared from superheroes throughout history way before the 2000's. Most Marvel characters, which were created at a later time, did not have trunks when they were originally created. Most of the DC characters created with trunks also lost them long before the New 52 (such as Green Arrow, Aquaman, Hawkman etc.). Batman specifically also lost his trunks in the 90's and then in Morrison's run prior to the New 52, and Morrison is far from a "everything needs to be realistic" guy.

In the same way, our species used to have tails in a previous era. As the centuries passed, we evolved and lost the tail. We still have a few humans born with tails every now and then but the vast majority of humans no longer have tails and the human tail will continue on its path towards complete extinction as time goes on.
