Default What DIDN'T you like about The Fantastic Four movies?

So i've noticed that rather than just being disliked or hated, the FF movies are referred to as a joke, something not even worth validating.

I wonder why this is.

i mean i'm no fan but i don't view what collectively makes the movies as being any worse than other bad CBM movies or incorrectly adapted characters.

So What is it you actually didn't like personally about the movies?

For me.

1. Jessica Alba was too hot to take seriously as a scientist.
2. Johnny was a bit of a douchebag, too cocky for my taste, mostly in the first movie.
3. McMahon as Doom wasn't good casting but his role fit the movie just fine.
4. Sue and Johnny seemed to not even like each other.

What i did like:

Chemistry and humour between Johnny and Ben.
Silver Surfer was awesome.
Reed was decent.
The Things look was really well done for practical effects.
the power swapping in FF2 was lots of fun to watch

I don't think they were serious enough. Doom should have been as dark as Ledger's Joker with a messiah/Darth Vader type complex.

I liked ben and johnny in films. The practual effects for things were good.

I thought reed was miscast.Jessica Alba wasn't best choice for sue but I will
give her this credit she acted like she wanted to be in film and did her best
unlike some we could mention cough-Kirsten Dunst-cough

I will go counter to others once they had Doom In the actual helmet and armor
I liked him.otherwise he came off as norman osborn ripoff.

I thought the Silver surfer was well done.

Both films deserve their critism and while they aren't my favorate CB films there are a few things to enjoy.

I agree about Ben & Johnny. They were perfect. I think Naomi Watts would have been a perfect Invisible Woman. Ioan Gruffudd was a fine choice and if the script had been tighter he would have done an excellent job. Julian McMahon is a fine actor and I believe he could have done a lot better with the role of Doom.

From the special features it is evident that a lot of care went into these films. I think they mostly suffered from script problems.

Two words for the first film: Jessica Alba.

Six words for the second: Jessica Alba and too much camp.

Well, to be fair, Reed was smart enough to have Sue try and contain Johnny's powers with a force-field.

Fantastic Four:

Jessica Alba was miscast.

All the good scenes being cut. Extended Cut is far better.

The final fight was way too short.

Fantastic Four 2:

Jessica Alba

Dr. Doom killing the guy who freed him. I know he's evil, but it was cliché and completely unnecessary.

No Extended Cut.

Galactus not appearing in his comic book film.

For me, I believe Jessica Alba was miscast as Sue Storm. I also didn't like how they portrayed Dr. Doom as being too powerful & of course his origin. Another serious thing for me was how they made Galactus look. Lastly, both movies seemed campy for me.

First film:
The extended version had some scenes that were redeeming, should have been left in...I really didn't have an issue with Sue - more with Reed (wish he had been physically bigger, more confident and take-charge. Ben not having hair and Johnny not being blonde were a distraction - can you tell I want a version closer to the comics??? Doom was ridiculously off target.

Second film;
Sue looked ridiculous - nothing like herself in first film. Johnny and Sue...a few little incestuously strange moments.... the bachelor party scene was SO overdone and cartoonish....DOOM - the 'Lets all go for a spin' line was even worse than Marco.....Polo.... LOVED the Silver Surfer, Fantasticar - and even the power switching didnt bother me. Frankie Raye should have been a red head and had some type of personality.

The good:

Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis are good in their roles.
The Silver Surfer looks awesome

The bad:

Alba, Gruffud, and McMahon are awful.
The SFX are awful by and large
In both films, the plot is uninteresting and flows poorly
Changes to Doom and Galactus are laughable
Surfer easily kills the master that gave him his power
Doom is easily beaten in both films
Poor writing and direction

I honestly get more enjoyment out of Corman's crappy low budget film than I do these. At least Corman's movie was done on the cheap and has excuses. These had over 100mil invested into them. There is no excuse.

Sorry, but that is just shallow....

I'm ok with not liking her cast, I was blown away at that choice myself....but really? How about writing her as a "*****" rather than the motherly person that she should have been.... But, really? She's too hot to be a scientist?

2 was terrible all around IMO.

The first wasn't bad but it was corny and Doom wasn't Doom. He was Electro if he was smarter.

Reed Richards and Sue Storm, stop portraying Reed as a nerd just because he's a genius and cast Sue better.

And for all the technology they have, can't they make convincing silver hairs for Reed?

I didn't really have a problem with the ones in the original movies to tell the truth

The problem with the original is that it was written as a sitcom. It was intended to be a comedy with special effects, like Men in Black, but it was toned down to be a bit more serious. That's why the structure of the film is so odd; two action set-pieces are enough for a comedy adventure movie, but not a superhero action movie.

However, I maintain that Fantastic Four is, at least the extended version, a decent superhero movie.

With the sequel, it's simple; everything with the Silver Surfer is great, everything with Reed and Sue and their wedding and domestic arguments, is awful.

Sue was just a prize in the movie, she was not a person but a thing to be had. You have Doom that has been working with her for years but nothing more then that. They had no romantic relationship and yet on the mission he was going to ask her to marry him. No one in the movie cares what she thinks or wants they all talk about her as if she can't decide for herself. Ben and Johnny talk about her being with Doom as if he should just get her because he rich. Hell even Doom thinks this himself. Its even self evident when he goes to the Baxter Building to get her. He just starts to tell her what to do as if he is in control of her.

Too hot to be considered intelligent in other words?

No, she didn't even do anything science related. She was secretary. And a badly written character at that.

Chris Evans was great in the first two film - not good but actually great. He is meant to be a cocky ass.

Torch chasing the Silver Surfer was cool.

Everything else was an abomination.

When Peyton reed got the Ant-Man gig I read that he had pitched an idea to set it in the Sixties - that would have fantastic, excuse the pun. It worked for X-Men, actually saved the X-Men to be honest.

Reed, Sue and Doom are the reasons those movies didn't work.

Also, It was weird that Michael Chikilis was screaming "Vic!" when he is most famous for playing a guy named Vic. I never thought that until today when I was watching it.
