I don't see how he still could not have gone to Japan. The timeline is altered in 1973, so he still saved the Japanese guy from the atomic explosion and then he went on to become an industry giant.

Perhaps Wolverine 3 is a redo of Wolverine 2. But without the Jean baggage this time.

And a completely new third act!

Not really. His big reason for going was to see old man Yashida one last time before he died. Jean didn't really factor into that decision. She was just a voice in his head throughout he movie, including before Yukio first showed up.

Redoing Wolverine 2 without the Jean baggage would make it less special in my opinion. The great thing about Wolverine 2 is its not just a typical Wolverine adventure and there was a personal struggle from the start, he was lost and he hasn't learned to move on yet from Jean's death.

Yup the whole point was he was a Ronin, a samurai without purpose. The X-Men had been pretty decimated and he lost the love of his life.

I really liked the Wolverine and I think it is/would be a shame if that continuity is essentially written out?

It was more that he was haunted by a lot of things in his past. Jean was just the one that got visualized.

I don't think there is nothing that outright says he didn't. He still saved Yashida in WWII, so that plotline still could have happened, only likely differently. But, we also don't know if Wolverine 3 will build off that movie, or just do something that doesn't reference The Wolverine at all.

Wolverine 3 seems likely to be set in the Altered Future. I can't see how they can really set it in any other part of the timeline.

I agree. It doesn't make sense to continue where they left off at this point.

Logan still saved Yashida in WWII, so it's still set up for them all to meet up again, just under different circumstances.

I'd hate to lose Yukio and Mariko, so I hope they work them into the story somehow.

Why would Logan have not gone to Japan? Hell, him being in Xavier's Mansion instead of being a runaway would actually make him easier to be found by Yukio, making him arrive around a year sooner than he did in the original film.

It's not so much him getting to Japan it's just that his emotional state which was a huge part of the film, would be totally different.

As I mentioned they wanted wolverine the follow the ronin path, as a warrior who was lost. If he goes there under happier circumstances the whole character arc that he experienced would have been different.

The next wolverine could be set after events of Apocalypse.

It probably will be, his state was probably different, but we don't need to see how that happened in the new timeline, only that he was able to handle the situation.

It's hard to even speculate where and when this film will take place simply because we don't know where the character will be after Apocalypse.

Haven't seen DOFP yet, but I'm bummed that it seems to have erased The Wolverine, which was the best X-Men movie thus far. It was really going in the right direction.

I would love if they brought Liev Schreiber back. Aside from Jackman and what little Reynolds had to work with, he was the only bright spot in Origins.

Think of it this way: technically, The Wolverine had to happen in order for the new timeline to be created, and our version of Logan still remembers it, so that means it still exists.

Btw, I noticed two shots from The Wolverine during the flashbacks in DOFP. I'd seen the one of the nuke in WWII, but there's also a quick shot of his impromptu heart surgery in those flashbacks that Charles sees as well. Caught that when I saw the movie again tonight.

I would like in the sequel for Wolverine to go find Yukio in the altered future. She won't remember him and he'll have to recruit her for some kind of mission. Maybe related to Apocalypse. She can have different color/style hair since it's an alternate universe.

In the altered timeline, Wolverine will still have gone to Japan to meet Yashida who is after his healing power, but he won't be in the same emotional state. So he'd probably still have met Yukio, Mariko and Viper.

The next movie should definitely feature Omega Red. And I'd like to see Darkstar and maybe another of the mutants from that region of the world.

They'll probably add in one or two of the X-Men. Colossus seems like an obvious choice.

Somehow I doubt they'll bring back Yukio and Mariko, but we'll see. It would be nice to know what happened in the two years he travelled with Yukio, but since the timeline has been altered now, it's less crucial as there are two periods we don't know about (the two years in Timeline Prime and the two years in Timeline Sigma!).
