If anyone is going to Comic-Con, and by some miracle come across some DOFP merch (probably brought in from overseas), I beg you to take a photo and post it here!

thank you in advance.

Hoping to see some stuff at NYCC this year, since it's the weekend before the blu-ray release.

Tom Brevoort Semi-Confirms Reduction In Prominence Of X-Men At Marvel
Posted on August 2, 2014 by Rich Johnston

Marvel’s Tom Brevoort continues to answer questions from the good, the bad and the ugly. And there’s one he’s been dancing around for a while.

But now he has come the closest to answering it. When asked,

“Why isn’t there any X-Men cartoons? Why wasn’t there any licensing for DOFP. WHY isn’t there Goldball toys or any new X-Men toys? Oh and of course No real X-News at the Cup o Joe panel. Thanks foe your time”

He replied,

You’re talking about issues involving licensing and animation, and those are questions you’d need to ask to our people that oversee those areas.

I will say two things, though, both of which are pretty self-evident, I think.

1) There are only so many hours in the day, and so many initiatives you can have going at once,. So you need to pick and choose where you want to spend your time and your efforts.

2) If you had two things, and on one you earned 100% of the revenues from the efforts that you put into making it, and the other you earned a much smaller percentage for the same amount of time and effort, you’d be more likely to concentrate more heavily on the first, wouldn’t you?

This refers to Marvel’s deal with Fox, made during the bankruptcy of Marvel when they were taking any deal offered to them. While the Sony deal with Spider-Man has been renegotiated in favour of Marvel since, that has not been possible with Fox, who have the X-Men and Fantastic Four TV and movie rights, and who also claim a percentage of other media rights as well.

Earlier this year, Bleeding Cool covered decisions made at the top of Marvel regarding the prominence of the Fantastic Four within the publisher, citing even posters being pulled down in the offices so that executives who had been dealing with Fox, would not have to look at them. We printed a memo sent out to sketch card artists for a recently published card set, instructed not to draw Fantastic Four characters. We have talked to creators on the FF and X-titles who have been ordered not to create new characters for the books. We talked to Marvel staff who told us that the word had come down from on high to even cancel the Fantastic Four titles. And we have covered the increase in prominence, size and influence in the Marvel Universe of the Inhumans, as a replacement property for the X-Men.

But until now, no Marvel executive has been in any way open about this kind of decision being made, never admitting that this is even an issue. Self evident they may be but they have not been self confessed. Marvel Senior VP Publishing Tom Brevoort has just changed all that.
Source:http://www.bleedingcool.com/2014/08/...men-at-marvel/

Surely they (Marvel and FOX) must be able to work out some kind of deal instead of stifling X-men/FF fans? It's a win-win for all parties if they do IMO.

This is disgusting. And at this point I am - maybe even unconsciously - rejecting everything that has to do with the MCU, due to that obscene Marvel/Disney politics. Marvel turning against some of their most beloved characters is one of the most shocking things I've seen.

You don't have to tell me how bad disney Is treating X-Men just because Fox has film rights.

There Is part of me that doesn't want to spend my money on MCU as long as disney keeps trying to bury X-Men.

I can't say I blame Marvel. They signed a bad deal back in the day and don't want to be punished for it. And they don't have to anymore because of their franchise building prowess. Sucks for X-fans though.

Marvel's not burying them, they're just not focusing on them so much anymore most likely due to their relationship with Fox. And it does make sense; Focusing on making merchandise where you get 100% of the profit over another license where you only get partial percentage, of course you're going to focus on the ones that get you 100%.

And they're trying to push GOTG, which was a mostly unknown property that they're trying to turn into a franchise, so the focus is there - and it would be incredibly stupid of them not to focus on that.

We took my nephew to Marvel Universe Live last week, and Wolverine was one of the Avengers' team, Cyclops and Storm both made appearances, and the X-Men were part of the plot. How is that "burying the X-Men"?

Yes, it's incredibly frustrating that there isn't more X-Men stuff out there (just talk to my sister about that - my nephew wants an X-Men backpack for school and there aren't any), but I think we can dial back the conspiracy theories too.

I saw these today too. They also had a Cyclops figure, and there are also Magneto and Storm figures.

I was trying to find the Storm figure but there weren't any. I'm pretty sure that's their "chase" figure.

They're still not the best looking figures though. I long for the days of the original Marvel Legends figures. The good ones.

Don't recall the Cyke figure, thought Storm looked okay...surprised Stryfe had a figure and Jubilee was the BAF...but that Wolverine, out of the hundred of figures, that's one of the worst...and unless the costume is a mask less costume, I hate Wolvie unmasked...

off to ebay...

That makes sense for movie merchandise but they get 100% profit from comic merchandise and 100% from cartoons

As for movie merchandise why can't they do both GOTG AND X-Men Days of Future Past?

That would give them 150% profit (100% GOTG & 50% DOFP) instead of only 100% (GOTG)

Agreed they be out of business if not for those properties

Comics yes, cartoons no.
I assume they have a similar cartoon clause in their contract as Sony does with Spider-Man.
They can do both, but they choose to focus on the property that will get them 100% profit instead of 5%.
According to that Vox article, they don't get 50% from anything DoFP related, they get 5%.

According to this... http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/vp...9997-09-017007

They control more than 50% merch rights

Quote:
Under these licenses we retain control over merchandising rights and retain more than 50% of merchandising-based royalty revenue
Contracts may have changed since then but I doubt they'd have reduced their merchandise rights by more than 45%

I thought Disney Animation Studios owned the rights to X-Men. Wasn't that the whole reason they canceled Wolverine and the X-Men (UGH), so that they could make their own X-Men series in house...

(need I remind you it's been 7 years since then and no X-Men cartoon. it's complete BS how Marvel is treating the X-Men)
