Why not? There's been dozens of 3 Musketeers movies, and it's been a while since the last one. And I don't actually remember them ever doing a movie that tracked the 3 of them since the beginnings of their friendship.

So this will be Three Musketeers Begins or Episode I.
I love any and all Musketeer movies, so I'm happy to hear about this. The best one remains the 1948 Gene Kelly version, but there is such a strong cinematic formula that it's almost impossible to make a Musketeer movie that isn't fun to watch. Even the much-derided The Musketeer from 2001 has a lot of good elements, production design, lighting, choreography...

Yeah, and it received very poor reviews. In fact, everybody hates it.

The Disney 'The Three Musketeers' with Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnel, Charlie Sheen, and Oliver Platt was pretty good.
'The Man in the Iron Mask' was much better though with DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, Gerald Depardeau, and Malkovic. The Three Musketeers is the first book in the trilogy, The Man in the Iron Mask is the third book, does anyone know the second?

Most younger kids don't even recall the Disney one or the others, so this would basically be their first outing regarding it.

I think a Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and David Wendam would be three good musketeers and Drtanian should be palyed by Russell Crowe or Jack Davenport.

It's not a trilogy per se and The Man in the Iron Mask is only part of one of the novels. They are called the D'Artagnan Romances. The Three Musketeers is first; then you have Twenty Years After; and finally The Vicomte de Bragelonne, which includes three seperate novels, which are The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallière and The Man in the Iron Mask

I liked the movie with Michael York and Oliver Reed, and I also thought that Jeremy Irons et al were okay in that horrid Decaprio vehicle, so I do think there is potential for a buddy movie with rapiers here.
What I really want to see, though, is The Scarlett Pimpernel as a period espionage movie with a dashing lead and gaggles of hugely bosomed French floosies! |

The one thing any new version will not have that the Disney one did. Rebecca De Mornay's cleavage. It will never be reproduced.

They have yet to make a good adaptation of the novel.
I have long wanted to see a good, faithful and well acted Three Musketeers movie - and so I am intrigued by this project. The idea of doing a prequel is something I could get behind, especially if they try to save the actual Three Musketeers story for a possible sequel (which could be followed by a 20 Years Later adaptation and possibly even Man in the Iron Mask). I have always thought Bale would make a wonderful Aramis, though he is suggested on this site for nearly any role - I will suggest Rufus Sewell. Ewan McGregor would be an ideal for Athos. My dream Porthos - Paul Bettany or Sam Rockwell. Should Bettany not be used in this movie, and they make a sequel based on the novel - give him the Duke of Buckingham. Should they introduce D'Artagnan - Henry Cavill is my pick.

The 3-D Musketeers
Resident Evil helmer to bring new version of swashbuckling tale to big screen. by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK UK, September 2, 2009 - Resident Evil director Paul WS Anderson is set to bring a new version of 'The Three Musketeers' to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The helmer is planning a 3D version of Alexandre Dumas' classic swashbuckling tale, and is promising a contemporary take on the story. Set in 19th century France, the plot follows youngster d'Artagnan - who leaves home to join the celebrated fighting force. Although the film will retain the period setting, Anderson told the trade mag: "We are definitely modernizing 'The Three Musketeers' without compromising the fun of shooting a period piece. "But in our film, corsets and feathered hats don't take centre stage. Our version is rich in eye-popping action, romance and adventure." Andrew Davis, who penned the likes of Bridget Jones's Diary and the Brit TV version of Pride and Prejudice, will write the script with Anderson. Shooting is set to begin next year, in time for a 2011 release.

I'm all for...this.
Seriously. This seems like basically a reaction to SHERLOCK HOLMES. I kind of expected this to happen, actually. I agree, there hasn't been a really good modern adaption. Disney's THE THREE MUSKATEERS was so-so, and THE MUSKATEER was pretty subpar. I'm a big fan of THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK, but that wasn't what a Three Muskateers movie ideally is. If they can make a good adaption, low on camp, high on adventure and intrigue, with a relatively serious tone, this will be a winner. Providing it's good, obviously.

I'm not sure that a Musketeer adventure shouldn't be camp. The setting is baroque France, which was a camp time and place- powdered wigs, tight trousers and heaving breasts. Take those elements and run with them- just give a knowing wink to the audience.
