Cillian Murphy Keeping Fingers Crossed For 'Dark Knight' Sequel
Posted 10/21/09 4:11 pm ET by Brian Warmoth in DC Comics, News

Cillian Murphy returned for "The Dark Knight" after helping relaunch the Batman movie franchise as The Scarecrow in "Batman Begins." Murphy re-teams with director Christopher Nolan for his new film "Inception," so there is little doubt that Nolan would want him back if there's a Jonathan Crane role to be filled in "Batman 3"—and Murphy remains hopeful that a third installment is in the works.

"I hope they make a third one," he told MTV News. "I think 'The Dark Knight' was one of the greatest films."

Just because he's hopeful, however, doesn't mean that Nolan has shared his intentions on the "Inception" set.

"We don’t talk about those things," Murphy explained "It's out of my control."

Murphy spoke highly of Nolan's accomplishments with his Batman films thus far, though, and sounded optimistic that "The Dark Knight" may not turn out to be the series' peak.

"['The Dark Knight' is] one of the greatest blockbuster mainstream movies," the actor stated. "If anyone can match that or top that it’s Chris. Fingers crossed."

Nice to hear from Murphy. Would like to see him return with a bigger part this time out but I highly doubt it.

I'd like to see him come back. In whatever capacity. Cameo in his cell in Arkham. Whatever. I thought it was great for Nolan to include him in the second.

So hell yeah, bring him back.

It was pretty awesome that he was in the second film, no matter how small the part. I wish I hadn't seen his name in the cast prior to seeing the film though, wouldve been a great surprise!

As for the return of Crane, I think he should definitely return, even in the third installment, and he should be there bigger and badder than before. May be a little redundant, who knows.

I find it amazing that Murphy is the first actor to reprise a villain role in all the Batman films made thus far. If there is a third film I hope they do bring him back, even its its a cameo, as I feel they could've done so much more with his character.

I never liked the way he portrayed the character and as if that's not enough Nolan and Goyer's treatment of the character was poor and embarrassing at times. They had him beaten up by a girl after 5 seconds he had fully become Scarecrow on screen. Then they bring him back just to be put on shame again, after like 3 minutes and no more than 6 shots.

Nice guy or not, I can't care less if Murphy and his version of Crane/Scarecrow ever comes back. Because if he does he most probably won't be treated any better than he has been so far.

I dont see why Scarecrow should come back. Why? Sure BB barely focused on him but he was in TDK and it would be overkill if he is in B3. Not even the Joker terrorizes Gotham so often!
As for Nolan's treatment, i only disliked how he was beaten by Rachel. Otherwise although we didnt see a lot of him, Murphy's Scarecrow was amazing!

I know. I wouldn't mind having Scarecrow come back either.

Didn't in the comics Scarecrow turn into this big ass creature like in the Batman Arkyum Asylum game?...Also he could have been more scarier and hardcore in the movie like in the comics.

Joker still terrorizes it a good majority of the time.

I don't see much point in having Batman face off against Scarecrow again. He already fought him in BB and time would be better spent developing new baddies. I wouldn't mind a Scarecrow cameo though.

I would like to see Scarecrow return, but I think the character has run its course.

A cameo of him in his cell at Arkham would be perfect.

Well I guess his character development was for nothing then....I mean he was a secondary villian in BB, one of the secondary villians in TDK, can be again the B3 but havem ore scenes then in TDK, but in B4 if they make one he can be the main villian finally.....Even changing into what the Scarecrow really wears.

I'd like to see Cillian dressed as the Scarecrow we all know and love jumping around in his Arkham cell in Batman 3...but that might be a little hard to explain being as he was arrested in TDK.

It's like you don't understand the character of scarecrow at all!

Cillian is a great actor and obviously has the attention and respect of Nolan. It sounds like if there is anyway to write Scarecrow into the BB3 script, Nolan would definately want to do it.

I'm all for Cillian returning in the third one but in his cell in Arkham. IT would be a great cameo to see him in a cell across from the Joker and next to Falcone. The gravy would be a scene from Aaron Eckhardt flipping his coin as Two Face.
