Two things, 1) why start this thread off on a confrontative note?; 2) what's wrong with calling this a miracle?

It's a miracle that the child survived and a tragedy that the others did not.

1) Because some people have nothing better to do and 2) Because the term "miracle" implies the existence of a God which is simply not allowed.

A piece of equipment (a car seat for an infant) that successfully performs what it was built to do (keep the infant strapped in safe) isn't a miracle

According to Websters a "Miracle" is "An extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs," and "Divine" is "of, relating to, or proceeding directly from God or a god," so if you go by those definitions then yes. By the way I was being sarcastic about people not being allowed to express belief in a God, I don't have a problem with it. This is the same issue that came up with the stroller that fell down into the path of a subway car as well, and the discussion went the same direction.

Yeah, but you need to realize that only in English class and the internet will words be required to adhere to a dictionary definition.

Tell that to the people who think it's a crime to call this a miracle. If I didn't post the definitions, they would. As I said before, this is basically identical to the discussion we had last time this came up. I don't think there's anything wrong with calling this a miracle, many people use the word miracle just like the word amazing or extraordinary. Even if it was meant to imply divine intervention I wouldn't have a problem with that either because I can't prove there's not a God. They can't prove there is one either but that's not the point.

No one here has "it's a crime to call this a miracle", just that a car seat keeping an infant safe isn't a miracle.
