Gary Beach, who earned a Tony Award in 2001 for Mel Brooks’ Broadway musical “The Producers,” died on Monday in Palm Springs, California at the age of 70. No cause of death was given.

Beach also earned Tony nominations for playing Lumiere in Disney’s 1994 Broadway adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast” and the drag star Albin in the 2004 revival of Jerry Herman’s “La Cage aux Folles.”

I’m a figure skating fan and this hit hard. “Senseless” doesn’t even begin to describe this.

I’ll never forget seeing his performance at 2009 Worlds in person. Here was this 15-yo nobody kid from a nowhere country (in terms of skating) who skated absolutely like a champion, with the hardest jumps and completely clean. (Keep in mind that he skated early, so we had been seeing subpar performances up until his.) Every time he landed a jump, we got more and more excited, until it ended and we immediately jumped to our feet in the first standing ovation of the night. Most of us hadn’t heard of him, but we could see greatness.

I thought, “No matter what scores the judges give him because he’s a nobody, he’ll always have this.”

Watching his subsequent competitive journey was a roller coaster (to say the least), but he was always such a great skater. He had so much life to live yet. Jesus. Only 25.

I still can’t believe it.

Not sure if he counts as a celebrity, but Jon Schnepp was taken off of life support yesterday.

Oh this rough. My heart goes out to his partner, friends and family. He seemed like he was a great guy to work with and be around. He went from somebody I had no idea existed to a person whose views I had to hear on a weekly if not daily basis and then retroactively learned he had beena part ofa lot of things that I had enjoyed in the last 20 years or more.

Rest in peace King OfThe Sweaties. We will miss you.

A name possibly not that familiar to many...

William Hobbs, an innovative fight director, fencing master and stuntman who choreographed action sequences for such films as The Three Musketeers, The Duellists and Rob Roy during his long career, has died at the age of 79.

Hobbs was the swordfight choreographer in the UK from the mid 70s through to the late 80s (stage and screen). If you got someone else it was usually because he wasn't available. He did quite a bit of work for Hammer in their heyday, sometimes appearing onscreen.

A true fight choreography legend.

Shinobu Hashimoto passed the 19th. I was stunned to learn the writer of Seven Samurai had lived to see the year 2018. He wrote 70 films, including the Magnificent Seven and The Hidden Fortress. Maybe not a celebrity in a sense, but a very influential and important writer in film.
