Default The Official "Ask A Brotha" Thread

Now, before people get too over sensitive about this, I ask that you keep an open mind.

My closest friend was the inspiration behind this thread. So often does he say " go ask someone else.". With Black History month coming up, I'm sure people would like to ask questions about the impact African Americans have had on us as a race.

This shouldn't be racist, it should be about learning more from your fellow man.

Questions could range from culture, music types, certain slang, misunderstood myths, and food.

Let's begin..

Okay, I'll bite.

Who really "invented" techno music? Was it African-American DJs in Detroit, or electronic experimenters in Germany? Where do people stand on this ongoing debate?

"One Time" in reference to police, that one I never understood. Heard it last night in a Ludacris song.

Does anyone here have parents who lived during the civil rights era? If yes. What were their experiences with it?

My mother used to tell me stories about how the little Jewish girls in the neighorhood would ask her about her dark skin--"Does it come off?"

My mom is 63 and my Pop is 65 so yeah they lived through it and their views of things are shaped by that and I try to understand that whenever we disagree about certain things in regards to race. One time my mom said that she thought that it was more insulting to be called a ***** by a white guy than a black one and I disagreed with her as I thought that it would be equally insulting. I realized later on that she had experienced a far more racist world than my own so that opinion shouldn't have been surprising.

My mom says she remembers when blacks had to sit in the back of the theater and when schools were integrated. As a 27 year old black female it's hard for me to even believe how horrible things were. I mean we still have massive problems now but I couldn't imagine not being able to go into certain restaurants and having to sit in the back of theaters and buses. It offends me when some people say that blacks should just get over something that happened less than 100 years ago. I mean we are not that far removed from that time.

E-Man may answer this but all opinions are welcome;

Weaves- Do you like it when a girl wears them? Or do you prefer their natural hair?

I personally don't mind weaves as long as they are done right. A lot of celebs wear them, black and white, but you would be able to tell. I don't like a womans hair to look a mess no matter what anyway. So as long as it doesn't look a mess, I'm good.

I'm in love with the natural look. Give me a girl with some curls and I'm hooked! With weaves it's like makeup. I prefer that women don't wear makeup, but it's such a losing battle that I've accepted it. As long as it's not too caked I'm okay.

With weaves as long as it's not too fake I won't poke fun at it. Some of these girls really go that extra mile to try to make that lie real. I am an expert at telling the difference between real and fake hair.

Personally, I don't like them. If their hair is fake, you don't know what else could be fake about them.

My parents caught more the tail end of it. When they were little they couldn't safely stop at rest stops when traveling at night, so they usually went on the side of the road in jars and stuff.

My grandparents have the stories about, y'know, on the train to Alabama from Cleveland and when they hit Kentucky border, all the black people have to move to the coal car. But my particular grandparents wanted to make sure we didn't resent white people because of racism, so there's always some note about that one white lady that was nice to him as a kid, or white abolitionists who ran the underground railroad.

It really does depend on the guy. I usually see black guys with unattractive (to me) white girls, and I think that's more of a racial insecurity thing. I'm partial to Asians, but there's little Kryptonite more effective than a compatible black woman for a guy who's not put out with his own ethnicity (ie bad experience, so "all black girls are X").

Eddie Griffin would disagree, I'm sure, but I really don't know any black guy who goes primarily for whites or asians who doesn't have a personal emotional gripe with black females.

I don't, but I can never tell, so no harm no foul.
