Jurassic World has no business making so much dough.

Why not?

It's a fun summer blockbuster with dinosaurs and great action setpieces - the perfect ingredients for a BO hit.

I even liked it more than the first film in terms how intense it was throughout.

It's good, but it's not great. A lot of great movies don't make much, and I don't even consider this in the top 10 in the genre.

I'm glad it did well, but it was a cultural phenomenon and that's why it blew up so big. But I find most of the highest grossing films (unadjusted) to be over rated.

I'm very interested to see how well BP2 does.

But, yeah, that movie sucks. By the end, I wanted all of the main characters to die horrible deaths at the claws, teeth and thundering hooves of various rampaging dinos. Although I am curious about what happens in the next one, the fact that Owen and especially Claire are sure to survive it pisses me off.

I didn't say it was great (although IMHO it is) I said it was good. As I said before the quality of the movie is what made people watch the movie over and over again. You can lay the platform for a movie to blow up but if the movie sucks then you aren't going to get multiple viewings.

In the example of TDK, yes, Heath Ledger's death brought people out (and maybe a little of Batman Begins) but the quality of the movie is what made the break records.

I've watched a lot of YouTube videos diss the quality of the movie but I don't think a movie makes the money it did if it doesn't strike a chord with the general audience (including the likes of Avatar and Titanic).

I expect it to reach the Force Awakens height no more.

- insert Transformers/FF/JW argument here -

Being good helps, but I don't think this movie is $300-$400 million better than most Marvel movies. It hit at the right time, right place, during thy right climate. It would have always done well, but it had quite a boost from factors most movies don't get.

All of the other films that were as good as BP (or even better) over history are surprisingly absent from the $700m ballpark (even with inflation). Being good will get you a long way, but the rest comes from the cultural phenomenon factor.

Let's quantify this argument, er... discussion. I'll pull some numbers directly out of my (hat), compared to other recent superhero films :

Being a well-made MCU superhero origin film of a lesser known character, BP might've been expected to make roughly $250 at best. Recent comparisons: Ant-Man ($180M), Dr. Strange ($233M).

Adding to that that it got excellent reviews, was well received by the GA, and had great timing (no competition), it could have normally been expected to make perhaps up to $400M. Recent comparisons: Deadpool ($363M), GoTG2 (a sequel, $390M), SM:H ($334M), Ragnarok ($315M).

The only non-Avengers film in the genre to break $400M in the last 5 years was WW ($413M) which was also helped somewhat by the cultural phenomenon aspect.

So I'm going to say that leaves roughly $300M, +/- $50M as the cultural phenomenon boost that BP got.

I agree with up to $400 by with normal MCU solo behavior, which would ballpark it at $350 million +/- $50 million. I mostly agree.

Infinity War has now ended its run in China with ¥2.39B. That makes it the 8th highest grossing movie of all time in China, and 3rd of all time for a non-Chinese movie(behind FF8 and FF7).

Disney's official USD number for China will be between $375-376M.

So basically we have 375 mil from China plus 990 mil from the rest of OS markets for a 1.365 bil total.

Great result.

US is looking like a 678,5 mil total.

2043,5 mil total WW.

Next time hopefully we get all the milestones. 400m China, 1B overseas (ex China) and 700m US.

That's a straight up lie. I keep seeing this comment on these forums

It had competition as early as week 3 with A Wrinkle in Time which took it's premium screens. BP had better holds than IW as early as week 2 so you can't just say it was competition.
