Pokkén Tournament Launches In Japanese Arcades This Summer. February 12, 2015 . 9:00pm

Pokkén Tournament’s online “National Versus” mode will likely be the most popular feature of the game, but it’ll also have a single player mode, local versus, and a tutorial mode that will teach you the basics of the game.

During JAEPO 2015, Bandai Namco revealed that their upcoming collaboration arcade fighter, Pokkén Tournament, will launch this summer in Japan. 4Gamer provides us with some more details and screenshots.

In Pokkén Tournament, you’ll play as various Pokémon in a 3D fighter, where the characters use iconic moves, while powering themselves up by going into a “Resonance Burst” mode, and getting help from other support Pokémon.

Pokkén Tournament’s online “National Versus” mode will likely be the most popular feature of the game, but it’ll also have a single player mode, local versus, and a tutorial mode that will teach you the basics of the game.

We previously got a close look at the controllers that will be used to play the game. Here’s the control scheme, which looks pretty straight-forward:

  • L: Support Pokémon
  • R: Guard
  • D-Pad: Character movement, double-tap for step
  • A: Pokémon move
  • B: Jump
  • Y: Light attack
  • X: Heavy attack

In Pokkén Tournament, it’s not all about your fighting technique, but there’s also a lot of strategy involved. In addition to to attacks, power-ups, and Support Pokémon, the “Resonance Burst” mode can turn the tables by giving Pokémon super power-ups and the ability to use the powerful “Burst Attacks”.

If you’re wondering how powerful these Burst Attacks are, you can probably get a good idea just by looking at these screenshots. They can also only be used once per fight, so you better make it count!

The Support Pokémon can also be of great help in battle. You’ll get to choose between two of them before each round, and they have their own unique moves and charge time.

Pokkén Tournament will launch this summer in Japan for arcade.

Pokkén Tournament’s Latest Video Summarizes All Of The Game’s Features. February 18, 2015 . 4:13am

All of Pokkén Tournament’s basic features in a new gameplay video.

Quote:

We recently received the latest details on Pokkén Tournament during JAEPO 2015, and Bandai Namco put together a new video that shows off all of the game’s basic features, including plenty of battle scenes. Here’s a look at the latest of the Poké-fighter.

Starting at the 0:40 mark of the video, we get to see some of the playable characters of Pokkén Tournament. Lucario is a balanced fighter, Machamp is all about pure power, Gardevoir and Suicune excel at long-ranged attacks, while Pikachu uses speed and powerful electric attacks to take down foes.

The video then shares more on the battle system of the game at 1:45. The fights are split into two phases—Field Phase and Duel Phase. During both phases, players will charge up their meters to use the powerful Resonance Burst mode, to transform and launch powerful attacks.

At 2:20, Namco highlight some of the Support Pokémon you’ll get to use in battle. Each of these Support Pokémon have their own unique abilities and speed, so you’ll get to choose whichever ones fit your playstyle best.

Next, they show a little bit more about the controls of the game. If you’re curious about what each button does, you can check out our previous report for details on this subject.

Pokkén Tournament is an arcade title, but it has online feature that will allow players to go against others that are in different arcade shops around the country. At 2:50 they show some of the different modes with Tutorial Mode, Single Mode, Local Versus Mode, and you can also use the Bana Passport Card to increase the skill level of the Pokémon you play as.

Pokkén Tournament will launch in Japanese arcades this summer.

Well I already said that the pokken stuff I'll post here. the other poke mon stuff will be posted where it should be the only reason I'm doing this is cause I don 't like peoples threads to go to waste . how ever if it was a general poke man thread it'd be merged & I'd be one of the people that would ask to merge the two. you have a awesome thread.

So since it already exists, might as well use it.

No, they won't say anything about a console release until it's been out in the arcades for awhile.

Pokkén Tournament Being Considered For Western Release. July 8, 2015 . 12:27pm

Pokkén Tournament’s developers discuss the challenges of operating
an arcade game in Japan, and how Pokkén attempts to set itself apart.
Quote:

NHK World’s most recent episode of Imagine-Nation in Japan did a feature on Bandai Namco’s Pokkén Tournament, including interviews with The Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara and Namco’s Katsuhiro Harada.

“Considering that many of the people in the generation who experienced Red and Green are now nearing their thirties, and those who were in elementary school then are now in university, we aimed to make a game for those who grew up playing Pokémon—rather than just target children,” Ishihara said. “The bottom line is, we want to show adults that this is the new Pokémon, and get them to play.”

As previously reported, the goal behind Pokkén Tournament was to create a game where you manipulate the Pokémon directly. Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada—who is in charge of Pokkén—touched upon how tough this can be.

“Players want to move around with a great deal of freedom and do a wide range of things, but the operability needs to be smooth as well. That’s probably the most important point,” Harada said. “To be frank, with both Tekken and Soulcalibur, I’ve worked for the past 20 years on the pursuit of how to best organize copious amounts of animation into a product that can be animated smoothly and comfortably by players. That work has led to where I stand now, meaning I’ve given everything I’ve got to pull this off.”

The challenges go beyond just designing the Pokémon and their animations, though. Harada says Japan’s arcade market—which is still hanging on despite the advent of consoles and smartphone gaming—is a brutal space to compete in.

“Players can quit a game after just one try if they find it boring,” he says. “Seeing people quit after spending a hundred yen or even watching them play from behind and hearing their reactions firsthand can be very tough. There’ve been countless games that have been unable to re-coup their production costs after customers say things like ‘this is not fun’ or ‘this isn’t good at all!’ I mean, it’s all for nothing if nobody wants to play, even after spending a stupendous amount of money to develop the software, to cover the cost of the expense of the chassis, and the costly system that serves as the base. It can really be an unforgiving market.”

In order to work around this, Pokkén Tournament is designed to be played using a familiar controller that will hopefully catch the eye of people that like playing games at home.

“Envisioning that our customers were Pokémon fans and maybe new to arcade games, we decided to forego the usual buttons-and-joystick approach common to arcade games, and opted for a controller people would be familiar with from home gaming, with the D-Pad, four buttons, and the L and R buttons,” says Harada. “When they visit an arcade and see this controller, even those who play at home—which is now the trend—might just think ‘I can play this one’.”

And Pokkén Tournament is being considered for release outside of Japan, too. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that The Pokémon Company’s U.S. division released a trailer for the game last year, but now we have confirmation from company president Tsunekazu Ishihara as well.

“I think the possibility definitely exists,” Ishihara says with regard to an overseas release of Pokkén. “Basically, as an arcade game we would like to push the boundaries of combining familiar Pokémon characters with new and unexpected ones in battle. We want to show people different kinds of Pokémon characters that they can actually use.”

Which Support Pokémon Would You Like To See In Pokkén Tournament?. July 16, 2015 . 9:31am

Bandai Namco are asking fans to vote for the next Support Pokémon to be added to Pokkén Tournament.

Quote:

Support Pokémon in Pokkén Tournament are characters that you can call out for help during fights. So far, we’ve seen the likes of Fennekin and Lapras, and now the developers are asking fans which one they should add next through a Twitter campaign.

The steps are simple. Follow the Pokkén Tournament official Twitter account. Then tweet using the hashtag “#ポッ拳”(#Pokkén in Japanese) followed by the name of a Pokémon you’d like to see as a support character.

Keep in mind, that it’d probably work best if you type in the Japanese name, which you can find by looking up your Pokémon on Bulbapedia and other websites. The campaign will go on until July 23rd.

Pokkén Tournament is in development for arcade. The game is being considered for a Western release.
