Apparently Pratt's audition was so amazing that Gunn was ready to cast him even if he stayed fat! Quote from Gunn below.

As much as I like Harrison Ford, Chris Pratt is able to do more than him. Honestly. He’s a true modern American hero. He lost 80lb of fat and gained 20lb of muscle for this movie, I didn’t even want to audition him at first. But he was so good I thought, ‘If we have the first chubby superhero, then fine.’ He wouldn’t have been the first actor in Hollywood to have a CGI six-pack.

Here's a really good interview with Sam Humphries, writer of the upcoming comic series The Legendary Star-Lord, where he talks about his approach to the character and what to expect from the series:

I read Star-Lord's first ever appearance back in 1976's Marvel Preview #4 , by Steve Englehart and Steve Gan. Englehart's writing actually holds up pretty well for the most part, and Gan's art still looks ace. Obviously, this is a quite different incarnation of Peter Quill than the roguish outlaw currently leading the Guardians, but this remains a compelling origin story in its own right, with some solid characterisation of Quill that in some ways feels ahead of its time.

Sadly Englehart never got to do any more on the book beyond that origin tale, and Star-Lord's next adventure was done by the team of Chris Claremont and John Bryne, before they went on to conquer the world with their X-Men comics. I'm reading the first part of that now, and sadly I'm enjoying it a lot less. The conflicted, flawed figure that Quill was in that first chapter has been replaced by a more typical swashbuckling space hero, and in a lot of ways this feels more dated than that Englehart/Gan origin.

Oh yeah! I'm totally going overboard with my Guardians purchases recently but I ordered these 6 variants!

Who picked up Legendary Star-Lord #1 last week?

I enjoyed it. Maybe a little slight on story, but Sam Humphries has a good grasp on Star-Lord as a character, and Paco Medina's artwork is gorgeous. I'm definitely interested enough to keep reading.

As you can tell from my previous post, yeah! I enjoyed it, although I'm not a huge fan of Peter's chiseled look.

Also picked up Skottie Young's Rocket Raccoon #1 and that was a lot of fun.

So apparently Pratt tried out for the lead in both Star Trek and Avatar and was told he didn't have that "it" quality. I think whoever said that left off the Sh- based on who eventually got those roles.

I think Chris Pine does a good job as Kirk, but I agree it's funny thinking people told Pratt he didn't have that "it" quality. I'd say the majority of his appeal IS exactly that quality. What I really think they meant was that he didn't have the "looks." He's super attractive now, but back in those days, while he was far from ugly, he didn't really come across as a leading man, either.

I have a lot of time for Chris Pine, but yeah, Sam Worthigton to me is the movie star equivalent of "the emperor has no clothes." Where he got picked up to be the lead in some high profile movies, which in turn got him more high profile roles while those films were in production, everyone believing he MUST be a movie star if he keeps getting movie star gigs. Then the films were actually released and he failed to impress in any of them.

I agree. But because Worthington hit the jackpot as the lead in Cameron's Avatar, he gets to appear in 3 more. Whether they will actually be good is another question, but thanks to Cameron they will still make tons of money.

They aren't bad actors. They just have no presence. Pine is better and I admit I enjoyed him in the reboot. But I don't think he necessarily made the role his own, just kinda did his best Kirk impression.

I don't like Worthington much as an actor but he was suitable for Avatar, Chris would've put more charisma in the role and it might have changed the movie drastically, maybe in a good way though. Pine is wooden but I like his Kirk, although now that I think about it.. Pratt as Kirk would have been just too good. From everything I've seen it looks like Pratt is killing this role but I cannot wait to see the final product to make sure he's worthy of all this pre-release praise. I'm a long time fan since the beginning of Parks and Rec so I can't wait.

Also, is anyone putting together a Starlord costume? I have a red leather jacket that I'm putting a bit of work into and getting this Disguise Starlord mask, has anyone seen it with their own eyes? Getting it tomorrow

I'm nt a big Worthington fan, but thought he did well with Avatar, and have no issues with him continuing on as Sully in that franchise.

Pratt I became a fan of after watching Take Me Home Tonight an underrated comedy IMO.

My crush on Chris Pratt grows with each passing day. He was SO damned charming on Kimmel. I really hope this and Jurassic World make him the A-list superstar he deserves to be.
