Default Larry David and Greg Mottola to team up for Untitled Comedy

Larry David to Star in Fox Searchlight Comedy To Be Directed By Greg Mottola (Exclusive)
6:46 PM PDT 5/16/2012 by Borys Kit

"The Dictator" co-writers Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, who worked with David on "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," are penning the treatment with David for the improv-based project.

Larry David is ready to be a movie star.

The kvetching comedian, best known for creating and starring in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and co-creating NBC’s classic sitcom Seinfeld, is in negotiations to star in an untitled comedy that Greg Mottola is in negotiations to direct for Fox Searchlight.

David came up with the idea and is working with Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, who worked with him on Seinfeld and Enthusiasm. There is no script but the funny men are working on a treatment for what will be a improv-based storyline, much like David’s acclaimed HBO show. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

David is producing with Berg, Schaffer and Mandel along with Bradley Thomas.

Berg, Mandel and Schaffer have plenty of improv comedy experience. They co-wrote The Dictator with Sacha Baron Cohen and are also producers on the movie; they also worked on Baron Cohen’s Bruno. The duo is repped by UTA and Hansen Jacobson. Mandel is repped by WME and Hansen Jacobson.

Mottola, repped by UTA, directed the hit comedy Superbad, which starred Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, as well as Paul, the sci-fi comedy featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. He just signed on to write with an eye to direct The Marriage Plot, an adaptation of a Jeffrey Eugenides novel that producer Scott Rudin is developing at Columbia.

WME-repped David is a comedic tour de force in the TV world, but despite a three decade career, he has largely stayed out of the feature film world. He recently cameoed in the Farrelly Brothers’ Three Stooges movie and starred in the 2009 Woody Allen movie Whatever Works.
Larry ****in' David.

I want so badly for this to be a feature-length version of the Jew Gangster movie Scorsese was doing on Curb. I think that'd be amazing.

Jon Hamm to Join Mottola's Untitled Comedy
Quote:
Exclusive: Jon Hamm has proved himself so adept at comedy on “30 Rock” and “Saturday Night Live” that it’s about to pay off in movies. I’m told that Hamm is about to sign on to play Larry David’s nemesis in the still being worked out improv film David is set to shoot this fall. The film, without a title, will star David as a Larry David like character–but with a different name. He’ll get into the same kind of situations as Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Greg Mottola is directing, and the “script-ment”–a script-slash-treatment–is being worked up by David and his “Curb” and “Seinfeld” writers. Fox Searchlight will distribute.

Larry David teaming up with Mottola is an exciting pairing. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

Sounds good...but why not just do an awesome Curb movie as this sounds like Curb. Needs some Susie.

Larry David mystery movie looks to be headed to HBO
By Steven Zeitchik
July 26, 2012, 7:18 p.m.

EXCLUSIVE: Looks like Larry David won’t be returning to the big screen after all.

The comedian’s shrouded-in-mystery feature project, which had been set up at Fox Searchlight earlier this year with an all-star cast that included David, Michael Keaton and Jon Hamm, is in the process of moving to HBO, according to a person familiar with the project who was not authorized to talk about it publicly.

Although deals are not done, the talks are well underway and will probably lead to David debuting the film on the pay-cable network instead of at the multiplex. (HBO got out of the theatrical releasing business a number of years ago.)

David, of course, has had a long relationship with HBO over eight seasons of the (sort-of) art-imitating-life comedy “Curb Your Enthusiasm" (and don’t rule out a ninth).

An HBO spokesperson declined to comment on the David film.

Searchlight was believed to be keen on the project but was not willing to match HBO’s budget ceiling, according to the person familiar with the project.

David has made select forays to the big screen, directing the tepidly received comedy “Sour Grapes” in 1998 and starring in Woody Allen’s “Whatever Works” in 2009. But it’s television where he’s become a household name, as co-creator of"Seinfeld" and then playing an irksome version of himself on “Curb,” which he stewards.

The plot details for the untitled movie have not been revealed by David, who often likes working behind a veil of secrecy, though the movie will have an improvisational style. Greg Mottola (“Superbad”) is directing the comedy with heavy input from David, who conceived of the idea and will also be credited as a writer, producer and actor. David’s “Curb” collaborators Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer are also writing on the film.

Larry David has finally lifted the veil of secrecy on his upcoming movie for HBO. It will be titled Clear History, and, along with the long-rumored Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton, its cast will feature a slew of other big names. Joining star David will be Bill Hader, Kate Hudson, Phillip Baker Hall, Danny McBride, Eva Mendes, Amy Ryan, Curb Your Enthusiasm standout JB Smoove as well as Hamm and Keaton.

Clear History, which David co-wrote with Alec Berg, David Mandel and Jeff Schaffer, centers on Nathan Flomm (David), a former marketing executive at a start-up electric car company who, after losing a fortune due to a petty argument with his boss (Hamm), is publicly humiliated for walking away from his 10% of a company now worth billions. Ten years later, his marriage over and reputation ruined, Nathan has changed his identity and lives a simple life on a small island off the coast of Massachusetts under the new name of Rolly DaVore. But when his former boss shows up to renovate his summer mansion, Nathan vows to seek revenge and drive his nemesis off the island.

Hader will play Rags, the friend and henchman of a local quarry owner who agrees to help Rolly settle an old debt. Hamm will play Will Haney, founder of the electric car company who has a contentious relationship with Flomm, his head of marketing. Hall will play McKenzie, the foreman of a local construction project who is duped into hiring Rolly and soon begins to regret it. Hudson will play Rhonda, the glamorous wife of Flomm’s arch-rival, with whom Rolly strikes up a special friendship. Keaton will play Joe Stumpo, the erratic and eccentric operator of the island’s quarry. McBride will play Frank, a local denizen and best friend to Rolly. Mendes will play Jennifer, a local resident who takes an off-handed suggestion from Rolly a bit too seriously, causing Rolly no end of trouble. Ryan will play Wendy, Rolly’s the ex-girlfriend whom Rolly discovers has been hiding an explicit secret since before they dated. JB Smoove will play Jaspar, the ex-boyfriend of a local girl who blames Rolly for the demise of his relationship. The film is slated to shoot this fall in Massachusetts.

Greg Mottola is directing and will executive produce with Bradley Thomas, Berg, Mandel and Schaffer. Monica Levinson is a producer; Laura Streicher is associate producer.
