Thanks guys! I actually started coloring my Carnage portrait in Painter not too long ago, so hopefully I'll be able to post that pic sometime soon.

Thanks! And I think I found how I'm going to do the image. Just check out below.

This is the old Iron Man sketch I had done. Just plain pencil on lined paper...

But after trying several painitng methods in Painter, and not really finding one that I liked, I tried something new. Here is the same Iron Man image after experimenting in Painter...

This is probably the same method I'll use for the Carnage portrait. And since this method is so easy and effective, I'll post a short tutorial on how I did this image either later today or tomorrow.

Honestly, this is some of the best art work I have ever seen. I like how you put your own spin on the drawings to make them more realistic. That Carnage pic is movie quality bro.

Thanks guys!

I'll post how I did that Iron Man pic in the next two days. My computer's been down and I haven't been online at all for a while.

Thanks! I actually loved the design of Venom in S3 (The concept artist who worked on the film is arguably the most talented I've ever seen). It just wasn't executed that well in the film. And the fact that the movie itself had terrible acting, music, effects, pacing, story and editing didn't help either.

And for anyone that was wondering how the Iron Man image was done, here's a short tutorial:

I first start out with a rough drawing of what I’m going for. In this case, it’s a concept design for a sniper rifle.

I then trace the design onto a plain sheet of typing paper, making sure to use a ruler for clean straight edges where they are needed. Using photographic references, I shade the image to give it a realistic look, but I don’t erase the outline. I then scan the drawing at no less than 250 ppi.

After opening the file in Painter, I wrap a rectangle selection around the entire image, then go to Edit, and cut the image. I then paste it in place twice. They must be pasted in place, and it must be twice. For the top image, I set it as a gel layer, and reduce the opacity to somewhere around 50%. For the bottom image, I go to the effects menu and alter the contrast. I increase the contrast and reduce the lightness. This will make the bottom layer darker and more powerful, but overall, the picture is too dark and grainy.

I then select the bottom layer, the one with the increased contrast and reduced light, and choose a soft blender stump. I reduce the strength of the stump to about 30%, and smooth over the entire layer, making sure to follow the lines and edges-hence the reason for keeping the outline-and trying to keep it as clean as possible (during this stage, you may also want to click the eye icon on the top layer to make it disappear and allow yourself an easier time to see what you’re doing). And after shading everything, I erase the oulines from both layers to make the image more realistic.

I may also make the lines a bit messier or fade them out, giving the image a wispy appearance as seen in my Iron Man image. But for this gun, I need all the lines to be clear and distinct. After smoothing the entire bottom layer, I reopen my top layer so I can see them together. If the picture is still a bit too dark, I can simply reduce the opacity on one or both of the layers. For the dark ridges in the gun, I choose the pencil tool and draw them in digitally. I reduce the opacity on that layer as well, so there is no portion of the gun that is jet black.. Then I set the bottom layer to gel as well.

From there, I add a new bottom layer for colors, and I add highlights in the spaces that have no grey tones. I also add a bit of wood texture as well. I don’t need to add in a metal texture, because the grain of the pencil already takes care of that. It makes the image grittier and realer looking, which is what I want. If I did want an ultra slick design, I could always smooth out the top layer as well. From there, I add a quick background to contrast the image a slight bit, and it’s ready to go.

The good thing about this method is that you don't need to be a master of digital painting to create great digital images. Most of the hard work is done by hand with pencil and paper. But that is also the kicker, the ultimate result of the image will rest on how good the original pencil drawing is. If the pencil drawing looks like garbage, don't be surprised if the finished painting looks just as bad.

Just finished a new character concept. I've been experimenting with a bunch of new techniques with color and style, as you can probably tell by looking at this...

Thanks! After looking at this design again, I really feel like I could have pushed it further. I think the wood pieces should've had a more wooden texture, and the metal should been more scratched up and rusted. I think I had just gotten impatient with the picture and wanted to send it out. But I guess as long as the CG gets a good modl from it, the design has done its job.

Thanks! I always been a big fan of Alex Ross, and I still use the same method of painting he uses, even for my digital paintings. I just feel like lately, the guy has stopped trying. He han't changed his color palatte or experimented with any new types of imagery. It's like everything he does has to stay within the confines of looking like a classic Alex Ross painting painting, and that's only leading to all of his images looking the same. It also doesn't help that his best stuff (Kingdom Come) was from ten years ago.

Right now, the artist I'm striving to work myself up to would be Lee Bermejo. Everything he does, whether I like the picture or not, always catches me eye.

And I've begun work on my Carnage portrait, which is now about half finished. I just need to complete a shirt design and some comic strips before I can finish the Carnage pic.

Here is the current progress on my Carnage Portrait. It still has a very, very long way to go before it's done.

I originally saw this in the Spider-Man 4 manips thread and thought it was excellent, the second time around it remains excellent! I like how you redesigned Carnage, I love the skeletal appearance of his face and how the black seems to be pulling at him. The eyes are well done, too! There is no doubt you have a talent for art!

With any visual art, there's always room for improvement. No matter how good you are, you can always push yourself further.
