"Superman Returns" for me. Even when it's not a reboot.

With all its problems at least was about Superman movie more than a Kryptonian invasion movie and at least it got the Clark/Lois/Superman dynamic that is essential for the character. MoS was fantastic at many things but it deprived Superman from being perceived as the outstanding being in a normal world, which you need before throwing more Kryptonians around.

That's what a sequel is for.. MOS sequel will focus on Superman secret identity to the world, his relationship with Lois, his struggle with the villian (Lex) + a superman villain, and what most people would want is his charm. He has already accepted his Destiny as Superman in MOS and can focus on saving lives and not having to hide anymore. I have a gut feeling the sequel can be as good or better than TDK script with an evil billionaire Luther who help build Metropolis back from the damage left by Superman and Zod.

Man of Steel by light years.

MoS action, while entertaining at first it was numbing. Plus, other than a few individuals, Metropolis never knew they were being saved by Superman. For a Superman origin story that's really disappointing.

Lois already know who Superman is. The dynamic between the three characters is destroyed before starting. And that's a core part of what Superman is, as a story.

I am sick of Superman Returns-bashing.

A lot of cbm fans hated the script, the actors, the costume, the desaturated color palette, the noninexistent action, etc; and now they're like "okay. It's not that bad. I liked the way it paid homage to the Donner films. I liked Kate Bosworth as Lois. I liked the red trunks..." Geez. You're 7 years too late.

You're all a bunch of serious hypocrites!!

Even Bryan Singer said "I don't think that was what people were expecting". He's right. Man of Steel is the Superman movie we deserve since 1978.

MOS was a much more entertaining film. While it's far from perfect, it was a huge improvement on Superman Returns.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's as if audience goers and fans could't see this simply unfolding before their eyes especially with the way the film ended. To me it was a given with the way WB/DC would approach the sequel.

MOS was absolutely a fantastic film and a fantastic set up film as well. We don't need another angst ridden origin story as we have received that already thanks to Dick Donners films and it was revisited again in Returns even though it didn't have to be.

I told all of my friends and family, first and foremost this is a setup film/quasi origin film and if you go in with that mind set then you will enjoy it even more.

I think of them as two separate movie universes, just like there are crappy comic books the same can apply for movies too and Superman Returns while Bryan Singer had his best intentions as a coninuation to the Donner films it just didn't fly with today's fickle audience, the movie aside from having zero excitement and recycling the Luthor real estate plot from STM is just lazy writing.

Even with MOS's few faults it's still the better movie that I think can be improved with the sequels.

Thats how I feel to. Saw MOS last night I'm not disappointed but its not what I was expecting. I thought the story was poorly written and botched.

Hans Zimmer OMG YOU SUCK!!!!! The problem with MOS is botched editing and the music is AWFUL, just down right awful. The movie itself isn't bad, but they made a huge mistake. I don't care what anyone says, serious tone or not. It was a few epic moments in MOS like when he flew straight into the gravity beam. That was an iconic moment from the moment he made a fist and was trying to get off the ground but the music didn't match the moment.

I only like MOS slighty better than SR because of the fight in Smallville and the time spent on krypton.

Superman the movie still sets the standard of an Superman origin story. The only problems with STM is the goofy lex and not enough time spent on krypton.

Better reboot? this one. Better movie? Hard for me to say. Like what Showtime quoted the other day, what Returns got wrong MOS got right. and what MOS got wrong Returns got right. It's like there was never an option for a happy medium. But I think as far as rewatchability goes I'll gladly put Returns on over this one at home.

This X100. Totally agree. It was like they tried so hard to distance themselves from SR that they left out a lot of solid character and story beats.

I say they are both equal in my eyes because you're looking at two different movies and two different Supermen.

Yeah they are definitely two different movies. If they were both origin stories then maybe I could better compare them.

That said, on a character level (the common denominator), I think MOS wins.

LoL, I would have said the EXACT same thing. Geezus just based on the trailers "Man of Steel" by 5,000,000,000,000 miles.

Experiencing Superman Returns for me was like experiencing my nads being covered in a mixture of honey mayonnaise and letting 300 fire ants have an early breakfast.....and then taking a shotgun and shooting myself...in the nads.

After seeing "Man of Steel"? It's that previous number, multiplied by 5,000,000,000,000.

I have to say on every level MOS wins. Of course maybe that is because I am not a fan of unworkable situations.

On the other hand, I always felt SR went for a combination of both unworkability and outrage. If they had actually been going for unworkability they would have a set up where Lois and Superman had been married, but she gave up on him returning and moved on. The "presumed dead, wife moves on" setting has actually been used often in literature.

Comparing Superman Returns to Man of Steel is wrong (IMO.)

As SR is not an origin movie or a reboot, Compare Superman The Movie to MOS.

Or,

1. STM+Superman 2 Vs MOS (as first one is an origin movie which continues into second movie with Zod as a villain, both movies were shot back to back.)

Or,

2. STM+SR VS MOS (As Singer intended SR to be a folllow-up to STM.)

Three sentimental scenes in Returns that for me can't touch anything in this one:

- Supes explaining to Lois how he hears everyone

- Supes saying goodbye to Lois then flying up towards the sun

- Supes giving the 'father/son' speech to the kid (and I HATED the inclusion of the kid)

But by the same token, aside from Supes flying through Metropolis when it was breaking apart and trying to save whatever people he could there was no action worth even mentioning. And Kate Bosworth can suck the life out of scenery. I literally fast forward through 60% of the movie.
