WGN America Lands Off-Network Rights To Warner Bros.’ ‘Person Of Interest’
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Tribune’s WGN America continues to aggressively build its programming slate under the new regime. On the heels of greenlighting its first two original drama series, the cable network has nabbed the off-network rights of Person Of Interest in a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution. This deal, which will see POI premiere on WGNA in fall 2015, marks the first time the network has purchased the exclusive cable window to a syndicated series. “Person of Interest is a fantastic show with a top notch creative team behind it, and we are excited to be the exclusive syndicated cable home for the show as we continue to transform WGN America into a destination for quality premium content,” said Matt Cherniss, President/GM, WGN America and Tribune Studios.

POI, which just started its third season on CBS, is the first high-profile network procedural drama to come down the pike in 2.5 years. Warner Bros. took its time with the well reviewed drama, waiting for the right time when more buyers were available. The company recently took POI out to multiple cable networks, with WGN being the most aggressive, landing the series for what I hear is a license fee in the $1.1-1.5 million range per episode. (The deal includes a carved out broadcast window.) While that is shy of the $2 million an episode commanded by such series as Warner Bros.’ The Mentalist and CBS’ NCIS: LA and Hawaii Five-0 at the height of the off-network market several years ago, those prices are a thing of the past as they led to several writedowns by cable networks who now put more and more emphasis on original series. But it is impossible to launch a cable network with originals alone. Popular off-network dramas are a key building block and tend to draw eyeballs the way NCIS repeats helped establish USA and Law & Order reruns put TNT on the map, a sentiment echoed by Ken Warner, president of WBTVD. “The new leadership of Tribune has made it clear they intend to transform WGN into a dominant player,” he said. “All top entertainment cable services have at their core a strong foundation of acquired content and distinctive original series. We are thrilled to contribute POI, a dominant off network hour to the mix of successful original shows they will launch.”

Created by Jonathan Nolan and co-produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, Person of Interest stars Jim Caviezel, Michael Emerson, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Chapman, Sarah Shahi and Amy Acker. It isexecutive produced by Abrams, Nolan, Greg Plageman and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg is co-executive producer.

Enjoyable episode tonight. My favorite moment was Carter and Shaw exchanging gun talk with Zoe showing them her stun gun.

The ramifications of the Machine's independence...wow. Leading Root out of the asylum, and that shot without looking...I have no idea what's happening next and I like it.

The beginning with the ladies was fun. I wanted more of that. I didn't care for the son stuff.

The Root story is great.

Had a feeling when we saw The Company's hitman that tonight would be the night Shaw got out.

As for the main storyline, nice to show they're giving Shaw a life outside of missions and her bonding with Carter and Bear. Also, you tell that Zoe and John are maintaining some sort of relationship not shown in episodes.

another excellent episode I loved the girls out on the town. Shaw in a dress was amusing especially when Finch questioned about her demeanor.

The humour in this show is brilliantly done. The scene with the girls comparing weaponry was utterly hilarious.

Another solid episode. The only part I don't particularly like -but I understand why it's done- is the way the 'victim' trusts the team so easily and spills everything.

Not all of them do, but it's hard to argue trust when they save your life.

Yeah, yeah, I guess you're right. Besides, we don't want a "trust us, bla bla bla" every week, so I get that.

Pretty sure the ratings hit a series low last night. (11.65 million viewers, 2.0 demo) CBS made a huge mistake moving to Tuesday. Ugh.

This was certainly the Ladies ep and I don't just mean Carter, Zoe and Shaw looking fine on their night out. Carter got to be point and we saw Shaw may be a badass but she is very uncomfortable with herself and socially awkward when doing anything but spycraft/killing, I thought Sarah Shahi did a great job as she is far from unfeminine usually, but she came off like a guarded tomboy in this ep.

However the Lady of the ep was Amy Acker, she was awesome as Root became Sarah Connor if the machines had actually taken her over. I'm curios where she got her weapons training from and where this connection with her and the machine is going to lead.

Almost 12 millions viewers is still pretty good, right?

(ps: what's that about the demo? that's one of the things I don't understand from american ratings).

It's the 18-49 demo, the age demo that is typically craved by networks since it's the most important for attracting advertisers.

It does not have the young demo from Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men helping it anymore and the NCIS crowds tend to be older. Plus, it's now up against real competition in the form of Chicago Fire. I think/hope people will eventually gravitate back towards it once they settle in and find their viewing schedules for the year.

I think she will try to merge with the machine.

There's a great, long interview with Nolan and Plageman about Season 3:

I love Bear, I mean, I loved the first season and all, but when they got/adopted Bear beginning of season 2, it just added a new nice little dimension to both Reese and Finch

Great interview as they answered a lot of tough questions and provided plenty of breadcrumbs for future arcs/seasons.

Bear is one of the best parts of the show.

I talked to Caviezel at Comic-Con and he loves that dog. They didn't plan for Bear to tackle him to the ground, but they liked it so much they kept it in.

Damn! Carter just owned that scene.

Is this from the next epsiode? We all guessed that the rookie was working for HR and I'm glad Carter was onto him from the get go.

When the wife said "I didn't kill my husband." I was sooo disappointed that Carter didn't say "I don't care!"

Next episode looks great. It's like a crossover with Harriet the Spy.

Been having that feeling about her partner for some time, especially when he mentioned reading about her in academy. No person would actively seek out such a random detective/officer in as big of a PD as the NYPD.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I loved that Carter said "you want to play billy badass?"

Carter is becoming more like Reese and Finch every episode. Honestly though, as a mother I think she should've just emptied the clip into Laskey. One less enemy to deal with.

Carter won't be able to continue going after HR and dealing with Elias without there being collateral damage.
