I really am torn with this movie.
On one hand it's the story, setting and frikkin Batman.
But i really hate the animation

Remember its not the animation, but rather the character designs.

And I have to agree, I think it was a slight mistake to go this cartoony with this one.

Didn't notice until now, but it reminds me of Sean Galloway's style.

I’m a little bit worried about this, even though I’m actually not the biggest fan of the Killing Joke book the animated film took too many liberties and changes with that story. I fear the same is happening here.

Nah. His is much easier to spot as soon as you see the design for any female character, even in 3D.

My hope is that the changes we'll see here are based more off of inspired riffing on the general concept and conceit of the premise of steampunk Batman; giving Selina a role in the story as a vigilante for the unfortunate women would fit that, and the same with the Robins as a Baker Street Irregulars-group of street urchins and Hugo Strange as an "alienist" likely to misdiagnose Jack and the Bat.

The issue Killing Joke had with its changes was the whole setup, with a wholly original part one that was really badly conceived on its own and had both a different mission statement than the original TKJ (give Babs something to do) and an utterly wretched idea in how to do it (make her obsessed with Batman and sexualizing the crud out of her). As such, it kind of acts as a grotesque, cancerous appendix to a fairly slim but legendary main story (one that still has its issues, but ones that could have been somewhat overcome.)

And yeah, I'll agree the cartoony look is a bit "meh." They should have gone for either a straight up aping of the Comics style of something more stylishly noir like BTAS's original animation.

If you're being literal, that would cost several magnitudes over what the allotted budget for these DTVs would be. Not to mention it would probably triple the development time.

I'd rather wait when the time is right for a semi-adaptation in live-action.

Yep i'm being literal. And i know it would be very expensive however something along the lines of Kingdom Come is quite unique and as such i would like a it to be a unique project.
Hell give it to the Japanese and make it a all CG feature

Nobody's got money for that. Certainly not WB Animation.

At least not their home video division.

Though I'm hoping that the Miles Morales movie is successful enough for the studios to stop relegating superhero animation to blu-ray releases.

I'm not even sure budget is the problem, everything is just filtered into the most generic character models and animation. The Animated Series version of Dark Knight Returns has real personality and at least tries to capture some of the feeling of Miller's art. Compare to the DTV version which just feels so... sterile.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

The difference is in limitation (blocky designs-no shading-almost tweening animation threw me off) so they had to get creative.
The movie vers got to develop things more.

I don’t think Kingdom Come beeds to be 3D at all. This is from Thursday Kingdom Come and it’s not the Alex Ross art

I think people have too higher standards sometimes. I’d rather they adapted it into a great animated film even if the animation isn’t quite what the art is. It would like absolutely fine if it looks like the above.

Eh. You guys are right about Gotham by Gaslight, but you've lost me on this one.

I was perfectly fine with the visuals from the TDKR animated movie. They were plenty distinctive to me. Not compared to the comic of course, but certainly compared to the other DTV's, imo.

Up until they started a running continuity in the movies, I thought they did a pretty good job of approximating the look of the comics they were adapting. New Frontier and Year One looked solid. Under the Red Hood did a decent job of aping Mahnke. Even All Star Superman did alright with an artist that would be hard as all hell to adapt.

Doomsday is a different story, though. I've got my fingers crossed that the Death and Return of Superman finds a way to capture that early 90s Superman look.

YES!!! So glad I'm not the only one that wishes the animated movie would've been done in the TNBA style

I thought TDKR was the most accurate to the comics, compared to others like UTRH and YO. Those movies looked good, and I liked 'em, but TDKR looked much more accurate to the source material. And we can all try to forget The Killing Joke.

As for Gotham By Gaslight, I think it looks a bit too sterile for what it should be. It just looks too clean. But dunno, we'll see if it's any good....
