Yeah, nice move LA. No wonder Cali is in so much debt.

Could this turn the tide?

If this leads to hearings with scientific experts how could the DEA continue to classify cannabis a schedule one with the public watching?

Cracking down on medical marijuana will just drive everyone underground and empower the dealers, the same as Prohibition did with alcohol.

Prohibition against alcohol failed so terribly because people remembered what it was like to drink openly and resented prohibition for forcing them to drink in the shadows.

But most Americans don't realize what they've been missing (buying and smoking weed openly), unless they've been to Amsterdam of course.

Paul Ryan Flip-Flops Like Mitt on Marijuana Views

Paul Ryan is running as a flip-flopper's VP choice, so why not adopt some of those flip-flopping ways? Recently the Eddie Munster look-alike made comments that indicated a lack of worry with the decriminalization of marijuana. In fact, he expressed the sentiment that states should decriminalize/criminalize as they see fit without the feds looking over their shoulders. To no surprise he is now changing his opinion on the topic of cannabis.

Flip-floppy Ryan now agrees with Mitt Romney that marijuana should never be legalized. You know, these are the guys people vote for if you want "smaller government," but the one running for head honcho wants to federally keep a harmless substance criminalized—even if it is already decriminalized in some states.
Oh well they were for it for 18 hours, guess that's a start

Um, did this guy give any links as to where these comments from the "eddie munster look-alike"....wow, that made the article more, um, credible.

I wouldn't vote for Romney if he all of the sudden flipped to being for "decriminalization" as I am....but that issue doesn't fall into the "have to do this..." category for me either...

It did however change my % in the survey we all took.....and it wasn't for Romney...but other than that, not a big deal to me at the moment....unless they want to tax the hell out of the marijuana, and 100% of that goes to paying down the deficit....then it could definitely go into my "need to do this..."

It's to late now but I do think legalizing of weed could been a game changing campaign issue for Romney if all the right people backed him(recently Pat Robertson said it might be a smart idea and that's a biggy).

1. All the money you make by taxing and save on the war on drugs/incarceration
2. Small Government and All(you know what the Republicans campaign on)
3. It can be part of your "minority friendly" stance how to many minorities get jailed unfairly and unproportionally, and I am doing it fighting for them
4. Cut into the youth vote
5. Jobs Jobs Jobs
6. Medical benefits

I don't think anyone should come out of the gate with "legalizing"....I think "decriminalizing" would be the better route to take at this time....

I think "legalizing" would be suicide, not so much in the vote.....but in the war leading up to the vote.

Decriminalizing marijuana has been talked about by several conservative pundits, with little to no resistance, in my opinion that would be the smarter way to go.

I would do let the states decide for themself, decriminalize at a federal level

Well, the problem with that is the taxing of the marijuana sold. I want the hell taxed out of it...states taxing differently MIGHT, lead to a problem. Also, legal in one state, not in another....hmmmm....you now have a whole other crime to contend with when people cross into one state, buy it, and cross back into their state to sell it illegally....

Not sure that would work too well....

You'll be seeing this as soon as next year most likely if Washington and/or Colorado pass their respective campaigns in November.

Problem is the federal government can still come into those states and stop the production of weed

and they might well but if it continues to snowball and more states pass what are they going to do, post their jackbooted DEA thugs in every city and town in the USA? If enough states pass it I don't think the feds will have any choice but to give in

States will decriminalize for the most part before they legalize.

It's amazing with all the medical, industrial and harmless recreational applications cannabis is still illegal.

I guess the government really really hates when adults get the munchies and watch cartoons.

There's a documentary coming out called The House I Live In that looks to be a great piece on the drug war and the cost, not only in money but lives destroyed. If it screens near you go check it out.

We citizens have a terrible problem with a corrupt for-profit prison, political and police system here in the states. And it will take a lot to fix it because these guys will not give up their gravy train easily.

There's a hearing happening on Oct 16th about the rescheduling of marijuana with the Federal circuit court in DC. 17 states and Washington D.C. have legalized the use of medical marijuana. Some have even put full legalization on the ballot this Nov.
If we could get the DEA to reschedule it this would allow even more states to consider it ,as the federal ban is what keeps a lot of them from even pursuing it.

It's not that. it's just that politicians are too afraid to come out in favor of it.
that and the drug companies and tobacco companies are afraid it would hurt their business because it's so easy to grow. No one would buy it from them because they could grow it for practically nothing.

It's such a simple concept. And VERY easy to regulate for people who know how to use it responsibly:

• Person must be 21 years of age (maybe minimum of 18, it'd be up to the states) to possess or buy marijuana.
• Absolutely NO driving or operating machinery while using. (Penalties equivalent to DUIs, reckless endangerment, etc.)
• Growers' license tax of $2,500 initial, with either a $1,000 or 10% net gross renewal tax. (Similar standards would apply to sellers)
• Strict federal regulations for medicinal marijuana shops.
• Tax for interstate import/export.
• Legalization of the ENTIRE hemp plant; would result in a marked increase in textile jobs and alternative paper manufacturing.

This is notoriously difficult to enforce. There already are laws against driving while stoned, though. It's...problematic.
