I was reading the X-Men: Rarities book the other night, and I got the the Generation X story. It's amazing how good Bachalo's art looked in early Generation X stuff compared to what his more recent X-Men stuff looks like. I guess that really was the book that did suit his style. But even with that, it looked a lot cleaner than what he does now.

I get the impression that David fully intended for Layla's powers to always be the whole butterfly effect thing (and maybe also the resurrection stuff, because she did bring that dead butterfly back as a kid). There are several times in the earlier issues where it's clear that she's seeing multiple futures and trying to get a specific outcome.

But then Messiah Complex happened, and I think editors made David get rid of her. Having a precog around who could see where everything was going was going to create a huge plot hole in the whole Mutant Messiah thing; if Layla knew who the baby was and what she would do, why wouldn't she use her influence to create the best possible outcome? They also remembered to nix Destiny's Diaries before bringing Cable and Hope back from the future. I think if Blindfold's precognitive abilities didn't seem to be restricted to the immediate future, they'd have killed her off.

I also remember an interview with Peter David a while back, right around the time Adult Layla first popped up. He said something about how the editor didn't want to let him bring her back at first, but he had to tell the editor where he was going with her return. Then BLAM, when that particular arc finished, we got that scene where Adult Layla gave Kid Layla her memories to explain why she knew the future.
Layla's always been mysterious and more than a little morally ambiguous, though. If she can see everything, it's just as likely that she'd see her own interference would only cause more problems and back off, allowing others to take more direct roles and let things play out. That's a pretty common approach to precog characters--the Doctor's fixed points in time, Professor Paradox from Ben 10 always skirting the edges of what's going on and letting Ben take the central role, etc.

I'd love to get in on this X-Factor convo but I never read PAD's run because I suck.

Spoilers for the last X-Factor:

Guido kills Tier, Wolfsbane's son, and becomes the new king of hell, and uses his new power to bring everyone, including Monet, back to life.

But she's not a Precog. Her future self just told her some stuff.

I'm actually really going to miss X-Factor. It was a great grown up X-title. I liked seeing mutants engage with the world outside of traditional super heroics. It's taken a bit of a turn due to all the mystical stuff, but by this point I love all the characters (even Longshot and Shatterstar... how did that even happen?).

so another fakeout? I wish PAD would stop with this typical shock value tactic but I guess I cant be too upset bc it brings M back and frees her up to be in Xmen

Well, that particular part was a fake-out, but there's still an important status quo change for everybody, especially Guido.

Yeah, I was talking about her in Manic's hypothetical scenario, where her original "butterfly effect" powers would've been intact.

I'm unbelievably excited! It hasn't even started yet and it feels like classic Claremont, except without the cheese. At least that's what I'm hoping. I want this book to go head to head with Bendis' books in terms of relevancy and popularity. An X-line of this book, Uncanny, ANXM, and WatX, with X-Factor on the fringe sounds pretty darn good to me.

X-Factor is ending unfortunately

But if the upcoming crossover between this, W&tXM, Uncanny, and All New is any indicator, X-Men is considered in the core X-titles (unlike Astonishing apparently).

I don't expect Coipel to stay on this book past the first 5 or 6 issues. Hopefully they get another big name so the air doesn't come out of the title.

Doesn't he take a long time to draw? I recall his run on the FF book 4 was stunning to look at, but always late.

they should pair him up with Clay Mann who has a very similar artistic style. Having them switch back and forth between arcs on a title would be gold

Mann has been killing it on Gambit. Marco Checchetto is another good fit.

They already confirmed that Coipel is gone after three issues, and David Lopez is replacing him with Dodson filling in.
