Yeah, so since people always complain about who wins Best Picture, I wanted to see, if you were all 6000 members of the Academy, what movies would be your Best Picture winners since, oh, let's say 2000?

Here's mine...
Oh, I'm also ignoring that whole Best Animated/Foreign Movie. If its the best picture, it's the best picture. EOS. 2012 (so far) Best Picture: Moonrise Kingdom 2011 Best Picture: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Runners Up: Warrior, A Seperation, Drive (Personally, I think 2011 was a year of really good but not great movies, and none of them really deserved to win) 2010 Best Picture: Inception Runners Up: Toy Story 3, The Social Network, The Fighter 2009 Best Picture: Inglorious Bastards Runners Up: District 9, 500 Days of Summer, Up in the Air 2008 Best Picture: The Dark Knight Runners Up: Wall-E, Grand Torino, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 2007 Best Picture: There Will Be Blood Runners Up: No Country for Old Men, Persepolis 2006 Best Picture: The Departed Runners Up: Children of Men, The Lives of Others, The Illusionist 2005 Best Picture: Crash Runners Up: Brick, Munich, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 2004 Best Picture: Hotel Rwanda Runners Up: Downfall, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Howl's Moving Castle 2003 Best Picture: Kill Bill, Vol. 1 Runners Up: Return of the King, Oldboy, Finding Nemo 2002 Best Picture: City of God Runners Up: The Pianist, The Two Towers 2001 Best Picture: The Fellowship of the Ring Spirited Away, Monsters Inc, A Beautiful Mind 2000 Best Picture: Memento Runners Up: Requiem of a Dream, Snatch, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

I did four runners up, in keeping with the five Best Picture nominees system. The runners up aren't in any particular order.
2011 Best Picture: The Tree of Life Runners Up: The Descendants, Moneyball, Drive, Midnight in Paris 2010 Best Picture: Toy Story 3 Runners Up: Inception, The Social Network, Shutter Island, True Grit 2009 Best Picture: Fantastic Mr. Fox Runners Up: Inglourious Basterds, Up in the Air, A Serious Man, The Hurt Locker 2008 Best Picture: Wall-E Runners Up: The Wrestler, In Bruges, Milk, Ponyo 2007 Best Picture: No Country For Old Men Runners Up: There Will Be Blood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Hot Fuzz, Zodiac 2006 Best Picture: The Departed Runners Up: Children of Men, The Lives of Others, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen 2005 Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain Runners Up: Good Night and Good Luck, Munich, Match Point, Capote *If documentaries could win Best Picture, Grizzly Man would be my winner, and Brokeback Mountain and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room would replace Capote and Match Point as runners up. 2004 Best Picture: Sideways Runners Up: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kill Bill Vol. 2, The Incredibles, The Life Aquatic 2003 Best Picture: Return of the King Runners Up: Mystic River, Finding Nemo, A Mighty Wind, American Splendor 2002 Best Picture: Adaptation Runners Up: The Two Towers, Minority Report, Hero, About Schmidt 2001 Best Picture: The Fellowship of the Ring Runners Up: Spirited Away, Gosford Park, The Royal Tenenbaums, Waking Life 2000 Best Picture: O Brother, Where Art Thou? Year indicates when the film came out, not necessarily when it was eligible for the Oscar (which I'm not bothering to look up)
2000 - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, or In the Mood for Love 2001 - Millennium Mambo 2002 - Hero, or The Two Towers 2003 - City of God or Lost in Translation, or A Tale of Two Sisters 2004 - 2046, The Sea Inside, House of Flying Daggers, or Yesterday 2005 - Three Times, The New World, or Howl's Moving Castle 2006 - Pan's Labyrinth, or Syndromes and a Century 2007 - Spirited Away (or There Will Be Blood or Secret Sunshine, if No Country for Old Men hadn't won--one of few years the Academy got it right) 2008 - WALL-E, Lust, Caution, Let the Right One In, The Secret of the Grain, or Ponyo 2009 - A Prophet 2010 - Toy Story 3, Let Me In, Black Swan, Poetry, or Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives 2011 - The Tree of Life, or A Separation 2012 - Nothing I'd give a best pic to yet, but I haven't seen any of the Cannes entries, etc.

2011 - A Separation over Tree of Life
2010 - True Grit 2009 - Inglourious Basterds (although the movie that's sticking with me is A Serious Man) 2008 - Man on Wire (and, yes, The Dark Knight is terrific) 2007 - No Country for Old Men narrowly over There Will be Blood. Zodiac was terrific too. 2006 - Pan's Labyrinth narrowly over Brick 2005 - Grizzly Man 2004 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2003 - Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World over The Station Agent 2002 - City of God over Y Tu Mama Tambien 2001 - Mulholland Dr. (although Gosford Park and LotR: FotR are both terrific as well) 2000 - Memento Just to take it back further: 1999 - Being John Malkovich although on any given day I could vote for Toy Story 2, The Matrix, The Iron Giant, or The Insider. An incredible year. 1998 - Saving Private Ryan over Out of Sight 1997 - L.A. Confidential 1996 - Fargo 1995 - Twelve Monkeys 1994 - Ed Wood 1993 - Schindler's List (although Remains of the Day is rising in my estimation) 1992 - Unforgiven 1991 - Silence of the Lambs 1990 - Goodfellas 1989 - Do the Right Thing 1988 - Bull Durham over The Last Temptation of Christ 1987 - Robocop 1986 - Blue Velvet 1985 - Akira Kurosawa's Ran 1984 - Amadeus 1983 - The Right Stuff 1982 - Blade Runner 1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark 1980 - Raging Bull Last edited by Evil Twin; 06-30-2012 at 08:03 AM. |

I am a weird guy, but they're still all brilliant choices.
That's just a snapshot anyway. If I did that a week ago or a week from now, it'd be a little different. It ebbs and it flows. |
