The score wasn't bad. I just don't think it was great.

The 'theme', heard in "Flight" and "What Will You Do When You're Not Saving The World", builds with excitement but never seems to reach it's climax. It feels like it is building towards some kind of melody but never does.

I can't help but liken that to the movie itself, which upon reflection, felt like we saw Clark and Kal-El, but didn't actually see Superman. Yet, my hope is that the sequel will show Clark as Superman the people's hero, and that the 'theme' will evolve to something more like a main theme.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It lacks the crescendo. It builds but kind of fizzles especially in the action sequences where music plays a real part in the experience.

Just listening to the soundtrack now. I love it to be fair.

For those interested though, the track 'General Zod' from 4.22 in is as good as anything gets. Very moving. Worth a listen if you haven't already, as i wasn't expecting that at the end.

I listened to that on the way to work starting and rewinding to that exact part

I want a sample of the cue from when he discovers the scout ship and the moments surrounding it. Can't find it in the soundtrack.

Another review that says better than I could why I'm disappointed in the score. It may work all right in the film, but listening to it on its own is an experience that leaves me wanting. It's mostly noise with very little emotional content. I know Zimmer can do emotional music, i just don't hear hardly any in this score. And, as much as I love that touching upright piano tune, there's barely a variation of it throughout the entirety of the score. It's as if he was like, Yes, that's it, now copy/paste, copy/paste. Emotional or thoughtful moment? Copy/paste.

It's so the opposite for me. I like it as an individual listening experience, but it did very little for me in the actual movie. I'm still not exactly sure why that is.

That would be Flight.

I've recently seen this film twice, and as I suspected the film mixes on a bunch of cues are far superior to how they appear on the album. I knew something was up for example with the second half of "Flight" when I first heard the album, it just sounded bizarrely mixed. I knew something was missing and not only was it inaudible, it's not there at all. The "string section" is awesome in that track. I instantly said to myself upon hearing it in the film "there you go! I get it now". The same can be said for other cues, the string section again are far more prominent, as is choir on occasions.

Hearing tracks like Flight now without that powerhouse string section is very disappointing. Not to mention the mastering of the tracks, as they appear on the album (Deluxe included) isn't very impressive either. Too much DC, not enough fidelity. It all sounds rather flat. Strange, considering past Zimmer albums have been bombarded with bass. They still sounded better overall though. It's night and day if you were to switch between a track from this, to a track from TDKR for example. The latter having far better sounding sonics.

Hans Zimmer - Making Of MAN OF STEEL Soundtrack

Listen at 0:22

This just adds fuel to the fire. "If You Love These People" also has an awesome string section it again, which is far more prominent in the film mix, even with all those sound effects layered over the top, I could still make the connection. In parts of the album mix, you cannot even hear them playing the string writing you hear in that video.

They are, like "Flight" barely audible on the album mix. I've also just compared the trailer version of Zimmer's theme that was released, to the full album version, and it unsurprisingly has a far more punchier sound, supporting my criticizing of the album mastering. I quite like this score, so to have these issues arising is not something I'm overly fond of. A shame.

The second of silence in between tracks...because that's how built up and uplifting it is in the movie, sadly.

Copy/paste is Zimmer's modus operandi these days, sadly.

I think Hans did a good job with this score, in particular Flight, Earth and the ‘Saving the world?’ cue. Earth in particular, the end segment, brings to mind a country boy pondering his place in the universe. Of all the recurring piano cues, This is Clark Kent is my favourite – I like the end a lot. Zimmer was a perfect fit for Batman, IMO. You can pretty much go as dark as you want with that character and there’s no problems. I think Zimmer may have taken the view of Batman = he is dark and the world is dark. Superman = he is hopeful and today’s world is darker.

I absolutely LOVE this score. It was amazing in the movie and it's great to listen to when lifting weights and running. Seriously, it will make you feel like Superman and make you keep testing your limits.

Sadly, "Earth" is nowhere to be found in the movie.

After seeing this movie like 8 times now I tried putting all of the songs in order of how they are heard in the movie. Some were easy to do because of the title of song, but a few are a little harder. Especially when a few were used multiple times. Also a few of the bonus tracks are not in the movie and I still have questions about a few other songs:

1. Look To The Stars
2. Goodbye My Son
3. Ignition
4. Launch
5. I Will Find Him
6. Krypton's Last
7. Oil Rig
8. Sent Here For A Reason
9. I Have So Many Questions
10. Flight
11. Tornado
12. Terraforming
13. You Die Or I Do
14. If You Love These People
15. What Are You Going To Do When You Are Not Saving The World?

DNA - Krypton song or song when Jax-Ur is explaining the codex in Kal-El's DNA
Arcade - I remember hearing part of this when Faora was on screen, but don't remember if from Smallville battle or small battle on plane at end
This Is Clark Kent - don't remember hearing this

Not sure where rest of bonus tracks go if in movie. I know Earth and This Is Madness is not in movie. Any help would be awesome.
