What do you guys think of Colin Trevorrow? I might be wrong, but he seems to have less cult reputation than Johnson. Will IX be the RoTJ of the ST saga?

Well speaking of his last biggest film, Jurassic World, from a Directors standpoint it was visually a fantastic, my only problem with the film was its weak dialogue and generic plot.

But that's where Rian Johnson the Writer of Episode 9 comes into play, if what J.J. has been preaching all these last weeks of Johnson's script being that good and he in fact does knock the story and dialogue out of the park, then a Star Wars film with Johnson penning the script and Trevorrow at the helm sounds good on paper.

Let's hope that the overall delivery lives up to it aswell.

Well here's a silly way to kick of this thread.

Quote:
Fans Launch Petition To Bring George Lucas Back To Direct Star Wars Episode IX

Some Star Wars fans have launched a petition to have George Lucas, creator of the galaxy far, far away, return to the franchise for Episode IX.

Episode IX is all set to be directed by Jurassic World man, Colin Trevorrow.

"We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow, but he's not the right guy to direct Star Wars: Episode IX," the campaign states. "George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away."

George Lucas directed the original Star Wars, Episode IV: A New Hope, back in 1977 and returned to the franchise's director's chair for the less-acclaimed prequels from 1999-2005. He has since sold all rights to the Star Wars movies to Disney, who assumed complete creative control beginning with 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The campaign is slow-going, at the moment. Their goal is 500 signatures, which certainly won't be enough for Disney to even click their link, but they're currently sitting at 169 signatures, at the time of this article's publishing.

To check out the campaign, head over to Yuri Luiz's Change.org effort.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now playing in theaters. Episode IX is set for release in 2019.

The petition is ridiculous, but to be perfectly honest... George Lucas directing IX would be way more fascinating than Trevorrow doing it.

When is this coming out? Is there a change Collin can be replaced by Snyder?

You may be kidding, but I'd love a Zack Snyder Star Wars. He certainly wouldn't waste the cast of The Raid.

Maybe a little early to start speculating on ep IX. All we have at the moment is a director and a roman numeral

Sad that the petition is so slow-moving. And keep Snyder far away from Star Wars.

That certainly was the weirdest, most random part of the movie, and didn't feel very Star Warsy.

John Schwartzman, the cinematographer that worked with Trevorrow on Jurassic World and Book of Henry, is planning on using 65mm film for Episode IX.

The article also mentions that the film will begin production next year for a 2019 release.

Schwartz is the idiot that managed to make 35mm look bland and digital as ****. If he is going to do that **** again he might as well not even bother with 65mm film.

Star Wars: Episode IX To Be Shot On 65mm

The Star Wars movie universe continues to expand with Rogue One: A Star Wars story hitting theaters soon, and Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII coming around the same time next year. Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow is directing Episode IX, and today we learn more about his planned technical specs for the film..

The Playlist cites a recent announcement by Kodak about its UK facilities now being 65mm capable. The company has a list of movies that it will be handling at these facilities, and one of them (obviously) is Star Wars: Episode IX.

For comparison:
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens was also shot on 65mm Kodak film.
  • Star Wars: Episode VIII will be shot on 35mm film, as director Rian Johnson needs it that way for what he has planned.
  • Rogue One will be 65mm with 6Kresolution (nice).

So, it seems that Disney is definitely following a format plan for their big Star Wars films - and probably helping Kodak continue to climb from its near-collapse in the early 2010s. Since few fans have complained about the visual scope and splendor of these new Star Wars films, it all seems like a win-win to us.

It does beg the question though: what is Rian Johnson doing with Episode VIII that requires him to use 35mm?

Rouge One: A Star Wars Story will be in theaters on December 16, 2016. Star Wars: Episode VIII will be in theaters on December 15, 2017. The Han Solo Standalone Film will be released on May 25, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX will be in theaters on May 23, 2019.

Jurassic World was shot primarily on 35mm, with select shots on 65mm (the Hawaii locations) and various digital cameras. It didn't look nearly as beautiful as Dean Cundey's lensing on the first JP, but that's the nature of sequels. (I would also blame the blander look on the filters and color timing rather than the camerawork.) Trevorrow and Schwartzman had more leeway to do more visually with JW, due to the story, tone, and setting.

For Episode IX, they will stick stylistically close to what Dan Mindel and Steve Yedlin are doing, since it is a direct sequel, and not 20 years later with mostly new characters. It also seems like Trevorrow and Schwartzman are going to shoot the whole movie on 65mm, a la Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express.

Kathleen Kennedy on the future of Star Wars post Episode IX

Quote:
what are Lucasfilm's plans post STAR WARS: EPISODE IX?

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked that very question recently by Entertainment Weekly and surprisingly, it seems that Lucasfilm doesn't know quite what they're going to do either.

"That’s a conversation going on right now, too, I have to honestly tell you, could we [do nothing but stand-alones]? Sure. But I don’t know. We are looking at all of that. There are [possible movies] that we have been talking a lot about, but we are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?”

Are they actually going to shoot the entirety of Episode 9 on 65mm film or just portions of it?

That's a pain in the butt. What they should do is, mostly shoot on 65mm, and with any action scenes, just use the Alexa 65. That would be easier on the crew.

I think with the success of TFA and Rogue One, Disney will date Episode IX for December 2019. It's basically another big blockbuster date.

Fox only has Avatar 2 up for December 2018 (the rest supposedly coming in 2020, 2021 and 2023).

Do you think Ep9 will end with a big emotional duel/space battle/ground battle like Jedi? If so, I can't imagine how they'll top Rogue One's space battle for size. Feels like they shot the "epic dogfight" load too early, unless they're going for something more offbeat/unexpected.

They'll go big I'm sure. But it will have the advantage of being the climax for all of the characters' arcs, characters that we will have been with closely for three whole movies at that point. So it could have trouble matching the sense of scale with the Battle of Scarif, but the depth of the character dynamics will (should) make it feel bigger, more important. It will have that above Rogue One by a considerable margin.

The movie started casting two months ago, with filming starting in July.

With Fox officially dating the Avatar sequels, starting in 2020, it's safe to say that Episode IX will get that December 13, 2019 release date.
