Though not a law of nature, “Occam’s Razor” is a generally sound principle: all other things being equal, it’s rational to choose the most parsimonious explanation for a given phenomenon.

And the notion that a mass with sufficiently strong gravity tends to form a spherical shape is fairly straightforward. OTOH, the Flat Earth hypothesis - which requires a myriad of special pleadings and conspiracy theories - is the very opposite of parsimonious.

Never mind they've admitted to seeing Mars and other planets are spherical but for whatever reason, we're special.

No, silly. Those planets only LOOK spherical because of a trick of the light.

To me belief that the Earth is flat seems pretty stupid and unhinged (indeed if it was a conspiracy what are the benefits/motivation?) but that the moon landings were faked seems pretty intriguing and not exactly implausible and it seems weird (though frankly also amusing) that many get offended/horrified about belief in the latter.

It's possible to have faked the moon landings, I just doubt that was the case. I think we really went there.

No, it isn't possible the Moon landings were faked. Certainly not in an era without advanced CGI. There was simply no way to mimic the gravitational effects (not just the astronauts, but the dust, and equipment) on Earth. Among several other things, but that's a big one that was impossible to fake.

People get offended/horrified because hundreds of thousands of people worked on the Moon landings. They had a personal stake in it and by claiming it is fake they are essentially being accused of being liars. It is a direct personal shot at their honesty and integrity.

EDIT: Even today in Florida, you don't dare insult the space program (unless it is to complain about lack of funding), and it is a fraction of what it used to be. It is a campaign issue in pretty much every federal election.

Any conspiracy theory implies that many people are liars and don't have enough to integrity to be truthful; I don't see why people in the space program should get a lot of deference, let alone hero-worship, because they were really a lot of people(?).

*Of course* they have a personal stake in it, as you emphasize the whole state has a big stake in it, that does nothing to promote honesty and it can deter it.

To be fair, many who object to the idea that the landings were faked do object to most other suggested conspiracies.

Those are optical illusions created by the government who are controlled by the Illuminati.

Actually a conspiracy theory implies a limited number people involved and high levels of secrecy. The work of NASA has been not only covered widely by media for decades but NASA and its scientists take part in the peer reviewed methodology of science itself.

The idea that so many thousands of NASA employees over the course of five plus decades have taken part in a conspiracy to fool the public that we landed on the moon is ridiculous and does not in any way hold up to scrutiny or common sense logic. Could it be easily refuted foreign adversaries of the U.S. would have exploited such a reality. But it's not a reality. The reality is that American astronauts landed there.

What annoys me is giving this credence ON THE INTERNET, a technology that is in everyone's hands that can trace a big part of its existence literally due to the efforts of NASA and the American space program. Those satellites didn't get up there because NASA was running a dog and pony show for fifty years.

And yes... Seeing as NASA personnel, people who are by any estimation the best and brightest and whom could have dedicated themselves to any number of fields and made a lot more money doing so, have lost their lives sometimes in a noble quest to widen the frontiers of human knowledge it's completely understandable that they take great offense to the idea that they are really just part of an idiotic, implausible conspiracy theory promoted by the feeble minded and credulous.
