That awkward evening when your uber-Catholic roommate's uber-atheist boyfriend broke it off with him and tries to get him to see how organized religion manipulates and controls people, and then roomie vents to you and you have really nothing to contribute because you tend to agree with the ex boyfriend.

Wow that's um...a lot to take in. I'm agnostic so I would probably agree with the bf. Is he single and cute now?

So I've started using tinder now which is actually much better than Grindr! I'm having a lot more success with it. What dating apps do you use (if any)?

There seems to be a lot of "straight" guys on tinder looking for "just a friend". That wouldn't be unusual but there's a lot of winking emoticons after that. Way more than any other dating app I reckon

That awkward moment when the boyfriend of a very nice guy you're acquainted with hits on you on Grindr...

His profile says "discreet", which I'm kind of taking as code for "my boyfriend doesn't know I'm on here".

It's not my place to say anything, and I don't know the other guy nearly well enough, but it's kind of sad, because other guy is a super sweetheart and just the other day posted some picspam of Easter dinner with boyfriend and his family and was gushing over "love this boy", etc.

that's rough. But truth be told you also don't know what there relationship is like privately... open relationships while still being discreet arn't unheard of. I mean, did the guy who hit on you know it was you? and does he know you? because.. if so that was a huge huge huge risk if he didn't want caught.

I doubt he knows who I am. I'm just Facebook friends with his bf, I don't hang out with him or really even talk to him, we just have a bunch of mutual friends.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's like the unspoken rule of Grindr. What happens there stays there.

Honestly, even if I saw a family member or romantic partner of one of my closest friends on Grindr I still wouldn't say anything. It's not your decision to make to out someone

If the bf was a friend of mine, like a real friend, I'd screencap the conversation/pics and show it to him.
Even if they had an open relationship I didn't know about, I'd still be looking out for my friend and he'd understand that.
But since it's just an acquaintance, I agree with Silvermoth and spidey.

yeah, i mean i wont lie, Marx and I use Grindr on occasion. We live in the middle of nowhere and would honestly like more gay friends..... our pics are both discrete

1) due to the fact my boss uses grindr (as do his friends) and i really don't want them assuming anything

2) i'm deathly afraid of ever seeing my dad on their ...

and

3) there's a big stigma with grindr... and I'd honestly really hate to be in a situation similar to what Schloss is saying where a friend or a friend of a friend might see us and think we are cheating on eachother... and that's not the case at all... people assume things really easily.

I'm not familiar to how Grindr works, but is there not an option to say "looking for friends or platonic relationship"?

there is. but no one pays attention to it or takes it seriously.

It's just like real life unfortunately... guys don't really care if you're taken or not.. or if you say you just want friends, they still will try to get in your pants..

Marx and i both have been hit on by someone in public who couldn't care less that we had a boyfriend standing next to us.

You say you want a relationship and guys run for the hills.. you say you just want friends.. and they're ready to stick their hands down your pants.. which is why i just leave my profile blank for the most part and list my dorky hobbies.

all dating apps, bars, clubs, etc.. are going to have people looking for sex.. you can't really avoid it, you just have to learn how to deal with it, because it's not going to go away.

At first I thought you meant there was a stigma about gay men using Grindr (as in people try and **** shame them or whatever) but I don't really care about that. I talk about it very openly.

I get what you mean about people making assumptions about your relationship though. That could definitely be ackward.

There's an option for looking for friends as previously mentioned but let's be honest, most people are on it for different reasons. Not all, but most.

I'm so glad I live in a metro area with tons of gays now so I don't have to use Grindr for finding friends

Oh there's a stigma.. with those in relationships or those not. No one cares or judges you if you're single.. but the moment someone in a relationship is on GRINDR the immediate assumption is CHEATING or they have an open relationship...

and that all stems from the fact GRINDR itself has a stigma where people assume it's just for hooking up. My rule of thumb... anything social is and will always also be used for hooking up. This has been going on since AIM and Myspace days.. all the way into modern stuff like Facebook, Snap Chat, Instagram, Tinder, Grindr, etc.. all if it has and can be used for hooking up. These are online bars and clubs... you can go there for fun, you can go there with your friends, or you can go thee to take someone home... it's all what you make of it. The option for sex is ALWAYS still on the table...

What I consider a TRUE hookup app/site is one that advertises sex/Porn... and allows the user to show nudity in their profile picture. those are the main requirements imo.. people on those arn't really looking for friends.. (though ironically in LA i did meet alot of friends off of Adam4Adam... but that was before apps were around. And i was attracted to some of them and we just ended up being friends.. but still...

otherwise.. everything else is just basically a modern watering hole. full of all walks of life, high and low...
