DC Entertainment Announces 'Young Animal' Comic Book Line
APRIL 07, 2016 5:43pm PT by Graeme McMillan

The alternative take on superheroes will be led by musician and writer Gerard Way.

Rebirth won't be the only comic book relaunch for DC Entertainment's superhero line this year, with the publisher announcing details of a brand new line, titled Young Animal, that will offer an alternative take on the genre at this year's Emerald City Comic Con.

Spearheaded by musician and comic book writer Gerard Way, Young Animal will feature four series mixing revivals of pre-existing concepts and original characters in an attempt at diversifying the offerings of DC's output.

"I am thrilled to help bring DC’s Young Animal to life, having been raised on experimental '80s and '90s takes on superheroes. I see Young Animal as a place to try new ideas — following the spirit of those books from the past but bring them somewhere else," Way said in a statement released by DC following the ECCC announcement. "I see it as an imprint where we can explore fine art, bold concepts, mature themes, and strangeness — with lots of heart."

The four titles in the line are: Doom Patrol by Way and Nick Derington, reviving the 1960s series of the self-styled "World's Strangest Heroes"; Shade, The Changing Girl, a gender-swapped update of the 1970s Steve Ditko creation by YA novelist Cecil Castellucci and Marley Zarcone; Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye, which reboots the star of the 1960s series Cave Carson Adventures Inside Earth, by Way, Jon Rivera and Powers co-creator Michael Avon Oeming; and Mother Panic, a celebrity heiress by day, vigilante by night, by Way, Jody Houser and Tommy Lee Edwards.

The new line launches in September with Doom Patrol, with Shade and Carson following in October, and Mother Panic in November.

If your first TV love was Buffy, this season of The Magicians is the adult who looks like that first crush but is into your kink.

So, this is where I'll be getting my DCYou fix during Rebirth.

The lineup includes:

DOOM PATROL – This September, in the spirit of Grant Morrison's legendary run on the series, along with other classic incarnations of the characters, writer Gerard Way and artist Nick Derington will put their unique stamp on the world's strangest heroes taking on the universe's strangest villains.

SHADE, THE CHANGING GIRL – An alien takes over the body of a 16-year-old bully and must face the challenges of being a stranger in a foreign land, plus the consequences of a life she didn't live. Star Wars’ Moving Target writer Cecil Castellucci and artist Marley Zarcone explore themes of madness, alienation, and the bizarre in this sci-fi thriller, with covers by Becky Cloonan. The new series hits shelves in October.

CAVE CARSON HAS A CYBERNETIC EYE – Writers Gerard Way and Jon Rivera, along with artist Michael Avon Oeming take readers on a strange adventure with DC Comics’ Silver Age character Cave Carson, his cybernetic eye and his college–age daughter as they travel to dark places deep in the earth and mind. Catch this new series in October.

MOTHER PANIC – Meet Violet Paige, a celebrity heiress by day and brutal vigilante by night as she takes on the underbelly of Gotham City’s high society. Hitting shelves in November, the series is written by Gerard Way and Jody Houser with art by Tommy Lee Edwards.
Okay, they've got my money.

Is this the same Gerard Way who was the My Chemical Romance singer?
