2-1 finish in the end for United. Decent performance and were far more clinical in the second half. Group won and a couple of goals from players that need it going into the weekend. Also great to see Luke Shaw get 90 mins and look a lot better than he has for a long time, can only add to the squad. Cant ask for more than that really.

Congrats. That will help Utd’s season being able to rest up for the PL.

I was rather surprised to see how brightly he played, good on the attack and didn't show the complacency in defense he was sometimes guilty of before. I'm still not sure Mourinho actually thinks he's good enough though, I think we'll end up seeing the back of him and probably Darmian at some point in the near future.

Hopefully he manages to build on this good performance and feature in some PL games, but we'll have to see.

There are probably going to be some very spicy fixtures in the next round since Bayern, Juventus, Chelsea, and Real Madrid all finished second in their groups. It's mostly bad for the PL clubs since teams from the same nation can't play each other in the last 16 yet, so United, City, and Liverpool all run the chance of being paired up against the La Liga/Serie A/Bundesliga heavyweights.

We played some good stuff tonight, this 3-4-3 really suits our attackers as Lukaku now has two players near him at all times which circumvents his poor hold up play and allows him to play quick one-twos or even go deeper and drive with the ball as the other striker will push ahead, and it's great for Martial and Rashford as it free's them from so much defensive work.

It was also great to see Shaw get a good 90 minutes under his belt, he tired in the latter part of the second half but was very good in the first half, providing a real driving threat on the left wing.

Good group campaign from the team, we did all we could bar the slip up in Basel, and now it's down to the luck of the draw!

Neither of them are from La Liga, the rap on Serie A is that it's slow, not lacking in physicality, and South American football can be extremely agressive.

Quote:
The reason those players were 'protected' so much is because they were playing the best football at the time and were being fouled left and right because it's the only way teams could prevent them from hammering them 5-0 week in and week out. Iniesta, Xavi, Messi, Neymar, Modric, Ronaldo, Isco, all receive the same level of protection and it's because they ghost past players and if they're not protected then they're pretty much shirt-pulled, kicked, blatantly pushed, or physically held back to the point where the game becomes unwatchable.

Barcelona's playmakers received that protection the same way Madrid's do now and did for the previous three seasons, because they play the most attacking football and they eventually get fouled out of the game. Refs are protecting PL players more these days too, Hazard, Coutinho, Salah, and the likes of David Silva/De Bruyne/Sterling are getting a lot of protection, it's not like these guys are getting hacked to death and there's no repercussion. Either we have to be alright with skillful players getting some kind of protection from perpetual fouls or we can't complain if the PL deteriorates into terrible route 1 football because skillful players don't want to bother.

This is what happens to all the skillful players in La Liga:

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

Is it any wonder refs start protecting them?
They shouldn't be protected, if they are fouled then give a freekick of course, but no special treatment, that wasn't the case with the Barca trio, You could barely look at them sideways without getting a freekick or yellow against you, I've never seen a side as favoured by refs as the Pep Barca team was.

Quote:
Barcelona didn't cane every opponent, but the styles are identical. Guardiola is busy dominating the big bad PL with a midfield of Fernandinho (physical, but not a giant), De Bruyne (some mix between a 10 and an 8) and David Silva (a 'luxury' #10). They're imitating the exact mix between possession football and fast countering that Guardiola liked to use at Barcelona during his first three seasons.

Granted, I'm not saying this team is at that level yet and we should wait until they've actually won something, which remains to be seen, but the similarities are quite obvious.
Personally I think this City side is much closer to his Bayern side than his Barca side, Silva is like Thiago where as De Bruyne provides the goal threat like Vidal, then he has Fernandinho who isn't as cultured as Xabi Alonso but is closer to him than say Busquets. Then there's the two wingers in Sane and Sterling that operate like Ribery and Robben as opposed to the inverted strikers he used at Barca.

No reason why you can't target a cup run. You seem to be comfortable in the league now.

We drew Wolves away - they seem happier than us, which says a lot!!

Haha damn.

I don't feel comfortable in the league with our recent string of results but winning some cup games might give us confidence and a run would be fun.

Impressed by United's performance and resilience over the last two games and nice to see Shaw back in the side and doing well, I hope he manages to win Jose over eventually, it's clear he can become a bonafide solution for the left flank, even though Ashley Young has been great this season.

Pogba will be a big loss against City, but I feel like we still have to go for it, so will be a very interesting game.

Amazing! And Spartak aren't exactly some minnows new to the CL. I don't know how good/bad they are these days? Awesome way for them to qualify. We now have 5 PL teams in the last 16!

City also lost to Shakthar Donetsk and Spurs beat Apoel Nicosa 3-0. 4 top place finishes in the groups for PL clubs and 1 2nd place (Chelsea letting the side down, but even then only on head to head record). Huge improvement for English clubs this year.

All the English sides safely through the group stages now they just need a bit of luck with the draw in the last 16 although there are some big names that came 2nd in their group this time so most likely some will face stiff competition in the next round but thats what the CL knockout stages are all about. Bring it on.

Also Arsenal win 6-0 last night against BATE Borisov and even Everton get 3! THe UEFA coefficient this season could be very strong compared to the other big leagues.

I thought it wouldn't be that far off but re the derby this weekend:

It was yes. Thought I'd written 1-0 but must have been a typo. Very early goal won it so West Ham held out a long time which is a credit to them.

1-1 so far, Toon vs Leicester. We really need 3 points with things getting tight at the bottom.

Just back from the Spurs game. Was a pretty tight game up to HT but the second half Spurs ran riot with Son and Kane both outstanding. Couple of quick second half goals and Spurs looked back to their best of last season. Stoke fell apart mind but Spurs were ruthless second half.
