I have no reason to believe either of them really but I'll give Sarandos the benefit of the doubt since we know he actually knows these ratings numbers as head of Netflix. I've got no reason to believe the NBC president.

However, the figure(4.8m/episode) he says about Jessica Jones is rather consistent with that Variety report 8 or 9 months ago that put DD's ratings at 4.4 million viewers per episode. Either way it seems likely that these Marvel shows are the 2 most watched shows Netflix produces.

If those aren't the real numbers, why not just give out the real numbers?

There's absolutely no reason for Netflix to do so.

Well neither of these figures are confirmed by Netflix so as far as anyone(outside of Netflix) really knows they are unreliable. Netflix doesn't want to play the popularity game. As far as they are concerned, it ain't nobody's goddamn business how many people watch their shows. And honestly I kinda love the way they are sticking it to the old guard's way's of doing things.

The Network Execs are beefing with Netflix because the Netflix execs usually brag that if their top original shows were on network or cable tv then they would be amongst the most watched shows.

The Network execs say Netflix should show them their ratings if that is true. Netflix execs say they don't measure the ratings of their shows the same way the Networks do.

The thing is, for a subscription service, those numbers are very good. They aren't current Game of Thrones good, which is the top of the game ratings-wise for this kind of outlet, but they are better than GoT's early seasons. NBC is free. So if that NBC exec's point was that free programming still gets more viewers than pay-subscription programming, then...no **** Sherlock. That doesn't mean half those viewers of the free programming care much about the content of that programming beyond, "well, it's on." The viewers of the subscription programming have to care enough to seek it out themselves.

NBC's numbers for Netflix were probably BS. They used an app on people's phones that people had to voluntarily download, which would then listen for the music of programs to play and registered that as the person watching Netflix.

The Netflix exec said all over the world people watch their shows at various times. It isn't like the traditional model of people sitting down to watch a show at a specific time of day. Demographic data is far more important to an advertising based model than it is for a subscription based model.

I'm so stoked that Jessica Jones is confirmed for a second season. The first season was awesome, and I'm eager to follow Jessica and her friends for another thrilling story. There's any number of exciting directions they could take the show in a new season, and so many things they can do with the characters.

I agree. Netflix hiding the "real" numbers isn't going to make NBC's claims go away. Put up or shut up I say.

Just saying if they are a publicly traded company than they have good reason to share numbers and ratings and viewership for specific Netflix originals. If they were a private company that would be another thing.

As someone that used to call around to get people to do the radio/tv surveys I can agree they are total BS.

No one wants to do them and it was only two years ago they started including online viewing like netflix but ignore any other online viewing.

There's small recorders that get sent out with permission that relay what gets watched but only a tiny fraction of people ever get asked to do them and far less agree.

Even the apps people use might give a tiny bit more data than usual.

The old ways are very slowly catching up to the new but the new outrun them a hundred times faster.

This. I bet there were far more people who signed up to netflix because they were doing a daredevil series than signed up for house of cards. The viewership is probably of lesser importance.

Glad to see the show get a second season.

Hopefully Robyn gets killed off in the first episode.

There's no reason for her to necessarily be there at all, imo.
