I for one think that's a great idea.

Dispel the double standard.

Does it fall under mythology though?

Yes. If they have time and space in the curriculum cover it in mythology or literature, but it should not be the main focus of any class. Cover it and move on. It should not be in a science classroom at all.

As far as Public schools it isn't taught as a class, maybe in some private schools or something. We have a Bible study that happens before school, but it is run by students, for students...teachers have nothing to do with it.

This seems to be a purely semantic argument.

Hmmmm....no. See, here is the thing, whether or not I think a President needs to think about, not think about, have an opinion, not have an opinion on these things, is irrelevant to me, just doesn't matter to me, whatever context you put it in, just not a big deal. That isn't putting a foot in my mouth, it is simply my opinion. You don't like it or don't agree with it, doesn't really matter to me.

I don't see why a president can't be both in his or her thinking.

Well, I don't care if a president has religious views as long as they keep it out of their policy and don't deny science.

I, for one, didn't say it was horrible. Just that it was important because it informs of his mindset.

And he can believe in both. There are plenty of religious scientists out there.

No it's not.

If you teach children Christianity as a mythology in the same way they cover the Greek gods it dispels the notion that it his somehow separate from all the other ancient religions. That's why they don't teach it as mythology. It would cause an uproar.

I see that as impossible.

But I've come to terms with the fact that there will never be an openly atheist president. At least not in my life time.

Still, I'd like one who at least agrees to certain truths like evolution, and the age of the Earth (i.e. it not being 6,000 years old).

If he believes some deity was behind the Big Bang... I can live with that.

What I fear is a President using their belief in any given religion as an excuse for it's foreign policy beliefs. Now does a belief the world is 6000 years instantly mean you want to go on a crusade? No, but it makes it more likely you will be willing to do it.

That's not what I was talking about. I was referring specifically to your "mythology" comment. Are you being intentionally evasive?

The fact he shows a disregard for critical thought and supports the teaching of all kinds of ideas that fly in the face of critical thought and facts bothers me.

I agree with all of the above. Maybe it isnt a huge deal if the President does or does not have a great understanding of science...but I would prefer it if they did.

Eh, that's nothing, the Republicans have Todd Akin and Paul "evolution is a lie from the pit of hell" Broun on the Science Committee in the House.

But that's what you get when so many people view a politician's views on science as irrelevant. Reap what you sow and all that.
