I agree a daughter, especially if it was Portman, would have been better. I also agree Shia pretty much blew, but overall I still enjoyed it. Doom and KOTCS are hurt in my eyes by annoying 'partners/side kicks' whatever you want to call them. Mutt's annoying in KOTCS and that ***** and shortie are both Jar Jar annoying in Doom.

The way a lot of people feel about Willie, Short Round and Mutt is exactly how I feel about TLC's version of Brody as well as Elsa in the film. It was terrible seeing Brody become such a clown in the film and for some reason I've always found Elsa intensely unlikeable and irritating. Just something about her irks me.

A lot seem to from what I've seen. He's always been my second favorite character of the series right behind Indy.

Comparing Short Round to Mutt is like comparing R2D2 to Jar Jar.

TOD or the series for that matter wouldn't feel the same without him to me, and not in a good way.

After an Indy marathon this past weekend, i wholeheartedly agree. It bugged me before, but man, it annoyed me even more after watching the films back to back. I'm all for humor, but i think they turned Marcus into too much of a goofball in TLC . I confirm the ranking i submitted before btw: ROTLA, TOD, KOTCS and TLC. Elsa, i dunno. I guess i just didnt connect with her as well as i did with the other ladies.

Oh, and I love Short Round

I never liked Elsa, either. Something about her always grates me. For me every complaint people have about Short Round, Willie, Mutt, etc. is applicable to her and TLC's version of Brody.

Still love the movie though, to me there's no such thing as a bad Indy movie.

Just wanted to share this ridiculously cool GIF I found. Between this and this thread, I feel like having an Indy marathon for the umpteenth time.

Raiders 10/10
Doom 8.5/10 (that 3rd act is probably the best of all of the saga)
Last Crusade 9/10
KOTCS 7.5/10

Amen to that. Very few other movies come close to matching TOD's third act in terms of sheer intensity and thrills.

I was thinking it'd be a good idea to rank the climaxes of the Indy movies as well, thinking about it. I'd say:

1. Temple Of Doom (mine cart chase, bridge showdown).
2. Raiders (opening of the Ark).
3. KOTCS (discovering the Akator temple)
4. The Last Crusade (the trials and the Holy Grail)

TLC and KOTCS are pretty close, though. Flying saucer aside, KOTCS has a fun finale.

Raiders
Raiders
Raiders
Raiders

The rest.

The sequels all have their flaws, but I still love all of them. As mentioned, Temple of Doom has an amazing climax. Last Crusade has great chemistry between Connery and Ford. And I really enjoyed the first half of Crystal Skull.

(Doesn't help that my favorite movie ever is Raiders lol )

I didn't mind Marcus as the comic relief in TLC because when you get down to it that was the first film he was really in as a character. His scenes in Raiders are all too brief for him to even be counted as a character in that film. He's just more like exposition guy there. So i don't see TLC as altering his character at all. He didn't have one prior to TLC. Not that I think he sucked in Raiders, but he just wasn't given any time to really do anything.

Raiders: 9.5/10
TLC: 9/10
ToD: 8.5/10

KotCS: 4/10 and a big ****ing mistake all around.

He didn't get a lot of development in Raiders, true, but for some reason TLC decided to make him so cartoonish and comical, and IMO it didn't gel with the kind of character Raiders set him up to be, which was someone who was serious and wise.

I didn't see him set up as serious and wise in Raiders. Knowledgeable about history, perhaps and maybe a little superstitious but that's about it.

He seemed pretty serious to me in Raiders with the brief screentime he had. He certainly didn't strike me as someone overly humorous or clumsy.

Marcus does seem less of a buffoon in Raiders but overall the humor level in Crusade was a notch or two higher than I would have preferred. I actually never picked out the Marcus thing specifically until the internet told me it was A Thing I Should Not Like a few years back. And even though I give Temple the edge over Crusade I still love it.

Sure, 'Temple' and 'Kingdom' get some flack online sometimes, but they were still big hits and critical/audience successes (Temple gained critical thumbs up over time).

1981's 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' remains the acclaimed series piece - earning an Academy Award Nomination for 'Best Picture' and is often cited as one of the all time great films ever made. 'Last Crusade', which opened to mixed to positive reviews from critics/audiences in 1989, but over time it's gotten even more good praise and is often featured in the Top 2 with rankings. 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' was the long awaited sequel and a welcome return for Indy, opening to very positive reviews from critics and audiences overall and became the biggest worldwide hit of 2008 and often marks third best in the series, and 1984's 'Temple of Doom' opened to mixed reviews and was quite controversial at the time - but is now seen as yet another good part of the franchise despite its shift from the other three films.

Each film is based on a part of film/comic styles;

Raiders Of the Lost Ark - Based on 1930s Action/Adventure Serials
Temple Of Doom - Based on 1940s Pulp Horror Comics
Last Crusade - Based on 1930s Blockbuster Type
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Based on 1950s Pulp Comics/B Films

I was lucky enough to see them all on the big screen last September in a row when AMC had the Marathons in every one of their theaters in the US in light of the Blu-Ray release. If anyone can go to a film Marathon of any series - go. It's alot of fun.

So, here's my preference;

1.) Raiders Of the Lost Ark
2.) Kingdom Of the Crystal Skull
3.) Last Crusade
4.) Temple Of Doom

This may seem very unimaginative, but I would rank them in the same order they came out in.

1) Raiders

2) Temple

3) Last Crusade

4) Crystal Skull

I generally find that with films that turn into franchises, the more sequels there are the worse the movies get. Indiana Jones is no different. The farther you get away from #1, the worse the movies become. I will say this though, I do enjoy all four of them. But the earlier ones will always be the best ones in my mind.

I always felt like the Indy series, great as all the films are, kind of became a different animal after TOD. The films ceased being edgy and dark, and embraced the more campy and OTT aspects. Which isn't to say the latter two are bad because I still enjoy them, but I'll always miss the more dark and menacing mood of the first two.

Well, let's say I realized he'd been turned into a bit of a fool in Crusade, but I certainly never got the feeling they were setting him up as some kind of proto-Indy in Raiders - I always thought that was Abner (and later Hat Guy from Crusade). How many of these guys are running around anyway?
