I think that Nolan has a chance to bring a villain back in the same continuity, played by the same actor, for a third time. That's fairly unheard of except maybe Lex Luthor or Magneto. It's new to Batman at least.
Cillian Murphy's Scarecrow was awesome. He brought to life in a great way a comic book character that hadn't made it to the big screen before. When I saw Scarecrow in Batman Begins I thought it was the coolest interpretation of a Batman villain yet. And let's not kid ourselves, Murphy is a phenominal actor. He was very much wasted in The Dark Knight. He should have had a scene with the Joker, or at least been a part of the ferry with the other criminals. In The Dark Knight Rises, there are many opportunities to explore his character because aside from the definately-not-returning Joker, he's the only villain who's had multiple encounters with Batman at this point. And he's a psycologist/psychiatrist. I'd think that the Gotham Detectives trying to track down Batman or discover his identity would come rushing to Scarecrow in Arkham for information. If there's any connection to Ra's Al Ghoul, be it Talia Al Ghoul, or Bane being one of his former pupils, or anything, Scarecrow is a valuable asset to them as well. I'm not saying he has to be a main villain, or even secondary. He doesn't even need to put on the mask. The downfall of his role in TDK was that the point of the mask is intimidation, but that only works when someone's under the spell of his syrum. Him wearing the mask was pointless. The fact that he'd become a drug dealer was an interesting idea, as he'd adapted to no longer living a double life, and he was purely a criminal. That's cool and all, but his strength as a character in Batman Begins was he liked to f*** with people's heads. Even when he's in his cell near the end of Begins, he's messing with Gordon. And he should be messed up from getting a dose of his own toxin, which I think is the direction they should have gone. If Bane were to break out the prisoners of Arkham or Blackgate and use that to wear down Batman before Bane confronts him, that's another opportunity to bring in Scarecrow. He's a cool character even if he's not a physical match for Batman. But was Two-Face? Was the Joker? No, but they're all able to mess with Batman with words rather than fists. We know Nolan likes or at least appreciates Cillian Murphy and his talents. Nolan used him for both Batmans and Inception. And I think Cillian Murphy's going to be a hot commodity again seeing as he was set up as a villain in the latest Tron movie. So Nolan would be wise to get him back at least for a little bit. So, why not spend screen time on a new villain, considering there are so many characters that have yet to be used? I'll tell you why: confusion and condesion. Introducing new characters from comic books can be a bad idea if not done right. Look at the last two X-men films. There's always going to be a group of people out there that love a little-used comic book character. And if that character doesn't get a proper amount of importance or at least screen time, they'll be upset. X-men 3 set up so many characters that were well known and had served greater roles in the comics, that using them for 5 minutes as minor characters in the film was upsetting. The thing about new characters is you have to establish them before you can throw them in to action. If you don't, then no one cares. You think anyone cared about Victor Zsaz in Batman Begins? No. So the more characters you bring in the more time you have to spend setting them up. We all know Scarecrow/Dr. Crane, and if he comes back in Batman 3 we can jump straight in to his part of the plot. Use him for a scene or two, and get on with the story. All the other villains have been killed off (or died in real life), and it would be good to be reminded by someone who's faced off with Batman exactly what we're dealing with. Anyways, that's my opinion. |

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it a matter of fact that Cillian Murphy signed on for three films?

I would like to see Scarecrow return. He is my favorite villian out of this film series and he atleast should have his name mentioned in the next film.

it would be cool if scarecrow sprays batman with more fear gas and we get to see one of either catwoman or bane through the eyes of fear gas

Do you think Scarecrow will make another appearance in TDKR? Do You think Christopher Nolan would keep that a secret? How can Scarecrow be involved in this? I know that we have plenty of villains already, but Christopher Nolan can juggle characters very well. Also, Catwoman is hard to determine whether she is a villain or not.

Personally I think Scarecrow is done in this series. He was caught by Batman in TDK and I'm sure is stuck in Arkham for the foreseeable future.

I really think he'll make a cameo at the end. If it comes full circle, I feel he'll be chasing crane, whose created a really diabolical plan.

I'll say this right now, if he Cillian Murphy does not make an appearance as Dr. Crane/Scarecrow I will be terribly disappointed.

Actually I hope not. I don't want them to overuse Scarecrow. Frankly I'd like to see a more fantastical version of Scarecrow on film in the future, and that won't happen if he is inextricably tied to every Nolan batfilm.

I can see your point as to tieing up a loose end as to if he eventually got caught but you have to understand what Bane does to Gotham.. we already know a lot of prisoners are released once again(ala what Ra's and the LoS did at the end of Begins) so I'm sort of banking that we'll see him somewhere in the film.

If he was released from prison then the Joker would have to be too, and i don't think either should appear

I'd rather not see him treated as a uber low tier villain again.

No. Nolan had his chance w/Scarecrow and IMO he blew it. There's no reason to bring the character back.

The only reason to bring him back would be to continue the theme of "freaks taking over Gotham"... since he, not Joker, was the original freak in Nolan's series.

Scarecrow's done. The only reason he was in TDK was because he evaded capture in BB.

Scarecrow had his cameo in the last movie. It's Ra's and Harvey's turn now.

Why?
Because there's no reason whatsoever to put him in the film? I liked his cameo in TDK but i don't want him again, it would make more sence for Joker to have a cameo but since Heath Ledger is dead then no ![]() |
