His death was sad and EVERYONE in the theater was dead silent when he had his last talk with Fury and the following scenes of the characters. At least half the audience gasped when he got stabbed from behind. In all, his "death" was well done. As much as I like him, I hope he stays dead.

I'm a bit fuzzy on my Norse mythology, but since the Son of Coul was a warrior who died a warrior's death in battle, doesn't that qualify him to spend the rest of eternity in Asgard?

Because, really, that'd be pretty badass.

i haven't read all 16 pages of this thread yet but has anyone considered that phil might become vision? the original vision was created by ultron by using the brain patterns of wonder man. with stark and banner now working together who's to say that they couldn't do the same with coulson's?

I don't like his character being gone, however the way he died and the aftermath was very well done. Specially with Iron Man's "His name was Phil" line. He went on a high note.

This evening when I saw The Avengers again there was a real, visceral reaction from the crown when Phil died. The reaction was far different from the fan screening. Some people gasped when he was stabbed in the back, and after he died I could hear some women behind me sobbing. The guy sitting next to me said, "Damn! I really like him!"

The scenes were extremely well-written and beautifully acted. People went from laughter to shock and sorrow very quickly. I still hate that Phil is dead, but I love the way he went out.

R.I.P. Agent Coulson I really liked his character in this movie and the previous Marvel movies, was definitely sad and surprised to see him die here. Made me want to see Loki get what was coming to him.

I went into it knowing that Coulson was the one that died (it was the one spoiler that I really wanted to know before hand - just the way I am)... I avoided telling my mom the spoiler and she was shocked. I might be in the minority, but I think it could be possible to bring him back without lessening the value of what happened in this film. I mean, if he were brought back and there were no ramifications whatsoever, yeah... that would cheapen what happened... But if it was done in a way to spawned off another plot point, like - for example - causing a wedge between SHIELD and the Avengers (because Fury lied to them) or something, I could see that working without cheapening it. If that makes sense (brain is still trying to process the awesomeness of the move *lol*

Right after he was pronounced dead, Maria Hill said to Fury, "Agent Coulson didn't have the cards in his jacket, they were in his locker". I wonder if that could have been hinting that the one that "died" was his LMD? That line has stuck with me. There has to be more to it.

I never got the Coulson love. He always seemed dull to me. But his death really earned his keep in the MCU in The Avengers.

As everyone has pointed, the thing with Coulson was that he tied the films together, and had a personal connection to every member of the team. I loved the way they connected him to Captain America, it was a genius stroke. He was a fanboy, he was us. He longed for a little "old fashion" superhero stuff, and that was one of the anchors of the film. Believing in heroes. I believe he knew that he was risking his life and while doing so, he could inspire those misfits to become a team. And in that way, We could insert ourselves in Coulson shoes, and ask ourselves, what are we willing to sacrifice in order to inspire good people.

I was shocked the moment he died onscreen, and it was only later that I realize how much I would miss his character in future Marvel films, and how much I would lament watching him previous films. So all in all, his death served a purpose, and a big one.

It was good to meet you Phil Coulson.

The point of that was
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
his last request, so to speak, was for his death to motivate the team to focus on their common goal of defeating Loki, so Fury honored him by doing just that. He lied about where the cards were, but it worked, it got under Tony and Steve's skins, and got them to work together.

I still think Fury may be manipulating the Avengers with Coulson's death, using information that he actually witnessed and possibly not telling the whole story.

Nick Fury is a good liar. No, a great liar. The movie made that abundantly clear, and Stark and Banner in particular emphasized that point. Hell, I don't think Maria Hill trusts him at all.

He's manipulative. Maybe in a good way, but he's still manipulative. I agree with those who say that he's not telling the whole story about what really happened. The door is still open.

While much of what he says is true, I think you sort of have to have a little hint of skepticism with what he says. I sure hope that they flesh out Maria Hill's character since if Coulson doesn't reappear in the MCU, she could be a nice foil to SLJ's Fury.

Man I didn't really think Coulson was going to die since I thought it'd have been too obvious. But atleast it was REALLY well done; I was legitly saddened by his death.

But hell, atleast he's finally going to be in the 616 comics.

I have a good feeling he will make it out of this one way or another. At least I hope so.

I'm not against the idea of Coul eventually becoming Vision. In the comics, Viz was the one who made the team more like a family, wasn't he? Despite not technically being able to have feelings? Well when you look at what they did in the movie, Phil is the one who brings them all together and ties up the bundle with drama. So...I dunno...why not?

If they bring Coulson back as a plot point to further tension between SHIELD and the Avengers because Fury lied to them to manipulate them, or something along those lines, it would work and be welcomed. If they simply bring him back, I think it will not be for the better.

R.I.P. Phil Coulson. You got one of the best, and most dignified Whedon deaths since Spike in the Buffy finale and Wes and Cordy in Angel.
