Interesting that Fox picked it up.

The only reason the Arrow/Constantine crossover happened after Constantine was cancelled is because NBC cancelled it. If the show had gotten a "back nine" order, some type of crossover story - wouldve happened during that span of episodes, because talks about doing a crossover were already in the works when NBC chose not to order more episodes.

If it gets a series pickup, Black Lightning being on FOX isn't going to automatically be a hurdle in terms of incorporating it into either the Arrow-Derived Multiversal Reality Construct or the Arrowverse itself.

Greg Berlanti talks about developing Black Lightning:

Quote:
Fox just picked up your adaptation of “Black Lightning.” How did you get involved?

That was mostly [executive producers] Mara [Brock Akil] and Salim [Akil], who are incredibly talented, and the studio just asked me to godfather them a bit, since this genre is newer for them. But they really have a vision for that show, so I hope I can help them execute it.

What is that superhero boot camp like? What are some of the lessons you’ve learned over the years that you hope to impart on the Akils?

A few of them would be that the shows have to exist as if they had nothing to do with superheroes as well. What kind of show would it be? What would it be about? What’s the emotional core of the main character and their journey? Inevitably if that stuff isn’t there, everything else feels like noise. I’d say also, your heroes are only as good as your villains. They have to have a great villain as well to challenge the hero. And to not be afraid to make it as specific as possible. Obviously we participate in a lot of these shows right now, and there are a lot of them in TV and movies. The ones that succeed have a real specificity to them. They did that and worked their heart and soul into their pitch. It’s a very personal story for them. I hope people will connect with it.

We’re seeing so much more representation now with superheroes. Having shows that center on African-American heroes, and with “Freedom Fighters: The Ray” [Berlanti’s animated series for CW Seed], a gay superhero lead. How important is it to you to expand representation in the TV comic book world?

As the shows have gotten more successful, executives are more open to taking the shows in all sorts of different directions and making them for everybody. It’s so great because it’s at the core of these characters. They’re heroes for everyone. It’s nice for people to see some bit of themselves in these heroes. And it’s just as powerful to me when a little boy comes up to me and talks about Supergirl and thinks she’s just as cool as The Flash. It feels like it’s part of the revolution happening in general on television. As there are more shows, people are getting better at realizing there should be more shows about, and for, and by, everybody from all walks of life. That’s better for everybody. It makes you a better storyteller.

Hearing Berlanti say he's not hands on with the series says more for how great this could be than anything.

Black Lightning apparently won't be crossing over with the CW shows:

Interesting that they wont even try, they seemed to at least entertain the idea with Supergirl.

I hope Static appears in this show down the line.

And it'd be untapped potential not to include this show in the Arrowverse unless they will attempt to cross this over with Gotham somehow.

When it was a Warner Bros. show on CBS. The two pillars of The CW. I think once you get Fox in the mix, that probably creates a bit of a barrier when it comes to potentially crossing things over.

I still think they could allude to it taking place in some corner of the Multiverse, but I think that goes for pretty much anything DC-related. There could also be a Gotham earth, there could be a Smallville earth, there could be a Batman '66 earth.

Stephen Amell alluded to a possible Constantine/Arrow crossover while Constantine was still running at NBC, and that show wasn't even produced by Greg Berlanti.

And then, of course, after NBC axed the show the character appeared on Arrow and is about to get his own webseries.

Basically, you never know what kind of arbitrary whims dictate DC/WB's policies about what shows are related and what characters can be used by whom.

I'm sure it being on Fox doesn't help but it's probably not a dealbreaker either.

If I had to guess, I'd say that it could be an issue of differing filming locations/schedules and the fact that Berlanti is taking a more hands off approach to the production of this show versus what he does on the Arrowverse. Akil Productions is taking the lead. They probably don't want to tie the showrunner's hands with well over 320 episodes of continuity including webseries (and tons of comics that are supposed to be canon also).

Is this the one that Johns was excited about for the new year, or was he talking about another DC show that hasn't been announced yet?

I feel like it's for the best. If BL is along the lines of Power or Empire, other Black Fox properties, it doesn't fit with CWDC, on screen or off.

There's still time to integrate it more fully if that's what they want to do. They haven't even started filming yet.

If they do put it in the Arrowverse I could see an Outsiders story.

They could use Arsenal and Katana, who both already exist

CW better start canceling shows. Not sure where they are going to fit all these shows. Outside of the CW, no one seems to want Berlanti shows. I wonder why that is?

I thought The CW weren't gonna add any more DC shows to its stable.

I'm glad it has a home but I'm worried they might try to go with a younger and hipper take on the character. The press release from Fox about him having a family seemed like a fairly unique take for a superhero show.
