Jobs became Disney's single largest shareholder after the Pixar buyout. After his passing, the shares passed on to an estate controlled by his widow. Then I read she sold off about half of those shares later on.

Funny seeing the people on the internet being estatic about the FOX/Disney merger because "X-Men and teh Fantastic Four are coming back" are angry about this

Apple forces you to use lame Apple products for everything.

There is no silver lining to this deal.
Ten years from now, all entertainment will be Disney, Apple, Amazon, NBC-Universal, and probably WB (too big for Comcast to want to dissolve... I think).

It will be terrible for moviegoers and television viewers in the long run.

Seems to be that way, unfortunately.

IDK. At least in that future there wouldn't be a bazillion different streaming services demanding $10 - $20 every damn month just to watch shows.

You have the option then of sticking with it or moving to independent media online. There are literally thousands of creators using Patreon, Kickstarter, GoFundme etc, who can be supported. In fact now's the time for those creators to be supported more.

We're a long away from those creators to match the output quality of even the most indie of these various studios and their subsidiaries.

That's only because they are so fragmented at the moment. The big change will be when a bunch of them decide to band together, which IMO is an inevitability. There's enough raw online talent across all disciplines globally to make something like that happen, all that's missing the co-ordination to do it. That will be a game changer IMO.

I'm referring to financial banking. Its the heart of most films' success, regardless of budget.

Young filmmakers have been afforded the greatest opportunities yet to pool all the resources necessary to put projects together, but funds are still the major roadblock to getting out into the actual market and gain visibility. Its impact is negligible without this.

If you combine enough big name online creators together with large and loyal enough fan bases getting something funded isn't going to be an issue with things like Kickstarter available. Next generation viewing habits are changing, kids aren't watching movies or TV in the same numbers you and I were growing up, they are watching youtube, so the opportunity is there to start taking advantage of that with the right planning. You get enough passionate people on board to a project with the right skills, get the co-ordination right and I think being able to develop good quality movies or TV series on a lower budget is entirely possible IMO.

Kids are still watching movies and tv shows as much as they always have. Things like Game of Thrones and network television shows aren't going to lose a popularity contest against some fan made kickstarter project.

And youre forgetting about rights and trademarks. You go ahead and try to make a kickstarter star wars movie and see how far you get when Mickey drags your ass to court. Kickstarter is never going to be a contender in the entertainment business. Not unless a bunch of properties suddenly and miraculously enter the public domain.

Never said anything about using existing IP's. And young people aren't purchasing movie tickets as much as their were a few years ago. If the viewing habits weren't changing Disney would be doing a streaming service.

You said:

The way they are viewing entertainment is changing ie streaming movies and tv shows. That is one of the reasons theater ticket sales have been in decline. But the amount they are viewing isn't dropping. Improvements in home video (bluray 1080p and uhd 4k and cheaper big tvs, Dolby atmos, DTS X, 3D at home etc) is also contributing to dropping ticket purchases as well.

I don't know the broken copyright system, the broken monetization system for content creators, the mishandling of adpocalypse, the forcing of users to sign up for a dead and failed social media platform, the copyright strikes against creators for videos when it falls under fair use such as news coverage, criticisms, etc.

I just don't know the kind of mandates Apple would impose since Netflix isn't a user-generated platform that relies on ads.
There is of course a possibility of a more premiere/exclusive service akin to YouTube Red, since they'll be losing more licensed movies/shows. It's also expected that they might force new users to have an Apple id, but that wouldn't be a surcharge.
