http://operative.net/

If/when Black Panther & Black Lightning are both successful, maybe some indie heroes will get some movie and tv love.

I dunno how likely that is....they can't or won't even get a Static movie up and running, and he's probably one of the top 3 black superheroes out there. Not to mention, even white indie superheroes don't end up on the big screen for the most part.

The best thing would probably be more "Hancock" situations, where a high profile black actor stars as an original character.

Well I did say movie and tv. With streaming services popping up like pimples they are going to need content. A few black sci-fi/speculative fiction writers are finally starting to get their work adapted, so if that eventually extends to comics that would be great.

Indie superheroes are original characters.

^When someone says "original character" I think, a character who has never appeared in comics before. When someone says "indie superhero" I think of characters who actually have appeared in indie comics.

It does sound unlikely that we'll get any notable of either outside of the creators themselves pushing really hard and making low budget critically acclaimed faire. There's only one Will Smith, and almost every other notable Black actor is already in a superhero movie. Maybe if Denzel or Kerry decide it's their time to cape up, MAYBE.

Bottom line is audiences don't care. If Will Smith had played Jaycen Wise instead of Hancock the movie would've still been a hit because Smith was still box office gold at that time. Blade was an "original character" as far as most of the audience knew.

I remember a BP movie being very unlikely until a couple years ago, lol. As far as Denzel...nah. Your average hero isn't 60 something years old.

This is exactly what I meant. Film makers aren't adapting a character, indie or not, but are instead creating one from scratch.

Hmm... I see your point, most of the audience will not care, and none did ten and twenty years ago. I think, however, post-Avengers, that whether or not there is research for film journalists to do on the hero has an effect on a notable part of the audience, and they on the rest of the audience in turn. So not only is there a distinction, but the distinction will be mentioned, and brought to the surface if someone can figure out how to get clicks out of it.

I agree that Denzel is unlikely to be a superhero at 60+, though not unthinkable, he still could get a movie financed if he is the mentor of the picture, whether that be an existing Indie or a true Original. If he's smart he'd pick an Indie, I think.

Just saw it last night. GREAT indie flick, like iBoy mixed with Imperial Dreams.

Filmmakers adapt characters from other source material all the time.

The point is simple, and was made in my previous post. DrCosmic talked about the difference between an original character and a indie superhero and that difference is pretty negligible IMO in the final analysis. Can filmmakers make original black (for the purpose of this thread) heroes? Yes of course they can. They can also adapt characters from existing source material. It's not an either/or situation.

You keep responding to points...that no one made, with responses that are blatantly obvious, to the extent that they don't need pointing out. Obviously they can do both, that hasn't been disputed.

Again...Lol. Again the quote in my previous post --from you-- said you didn't know what the point of what I said (to someone else) was. That person seems to have understood. It also ties back to what you said about "original characters" being the best thing. So here's another painfully obvious thing for you: I don't agree with the idea that that is the "best" thing.

Nowhere did I claim that Film makers don't adapt characters from other source material. That quote was clarifying my view on what an "original" character is. The only thing "lol" worthy is your continuous ability to respond to things no one actually typed.

Half of the things you've been saying don't tie back to what I've said. I never said the general audience cared about whether a character is adapted or an original creation. I also never claimed that this was an either/or situation, only that big name actors starring as original characters was the best scenario for more black superheroes onscreen, as I don't know how likely it is for filmmakers to adapt indie properties based on POC.

Then it should be obvious --like everything else I type apparently-- that I misunderstood what your quote was saying.

That's great since I never said you did.

And like I said in my previous post and which has --obviously--been the overall point, I don't agree that that is "the best" scenario. I see next to no difference in the two, except for in adapting indie characters there's the advantage of readily available source material to draw from.

Even Stevie Wonder saw this awhile back, the only one who didn't realize it till now was you, apparently.

I'd like a show or movie featuring a black solo superheroine. And not a Catwoman type thing.

It'd be nice to see Vixen in that role. I never much cared for her in the comics, but I really liked her on JL/JLU.

Just commenting...given the worries expressed in these specific threads over the course of 5 years it's nice to know in light of last weekend, BLACK PANTHER's release) our wishes came gloriously true and far beyond any of our collective expectations.

As an 80s kid during the period Eddie Murphy reigned as our biggest movie star I've always known that Hollywood's biases, which I learned about in the 90s when I started to get into the behind the scenes aspects of the business, ('we can't have a POC cast due to foreign sales') were a crock of **** and BP, as Murphy and Will Smith on their own individually years ago, has hopefully and FINALLY laid this to rest.

No one in their right mind would want that (assuming you're talking about the Halle Berry fiasco).

I feel like audiences will go see movies with predominantly black casts, they just get it ingrained in them via Hollywood and outliers that they wouldn't be interested.

Haven't been to Black Panther yet, but the hype is ridiculous and obvious as to the reason. I'm sure it's no better or worse than any of the other middling MCU movies. What I hope comes out of the much publicized financial success of the movie (and Wonder Woman too) is that these studios realize that they can make a movie of a comic book hero who is already black or a woman, and that they don't have to cast a black or hispanic actor in a white role, or a woman in a male role, to appease f'ing SJWs. Plenty of non-white heroes exist. The furor around the most recent casting of Spider-Man was over the top and unnecessary. The character is white, Batman is white, Superman is white . . . on down the line.

Part of that gripe was that they basically took the Miles Morales storyline and stuck Peter Parker in it.
