So I just built a decent gaming PC. What advice do you guys have for getting games on it cheap? I know the Steam sales are amazeballs, but there aren't any of those happening right now. I mainly play Marvel Heroes 2016 on it and a bit of League of Legends too.

Green Man Gaming

GOG has a great selection of classic titles and they have very Steam-like sales.

Also, Origin always have a free game up for grabs and they change it frequently. They have sales as well.

GOG are having their Fall sale atm, GOG are a great resource for older games especially although they have plenty of new ones.

In a few weeks we will probably see a Steam Black Friday sale, those are another good source of cheap games.

Cool. Thanks for the info.

BTW can anyone recommend a graphics card that can run Doom and Star Wars Battlefront at max setting without breaking my bank?

The main question is what resolution do you want to be playing at? If you just have a 1080p monitor or if you are wanting to play at 4K. These days extreme gaming is more about playing at 4K since a decent machine can do 1080 without much issues, but you need a top end machine.

Gives a quick rundown of graphics cards with Star Wars.

And Doom.

So really its down to the resolution and how much you want to spend.

BTW I've read that the Steam sale starts on the 23rd.

If you like LoL I recommend you to try Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm which is way more friendly (i.e. more casual, less toxicity). It's free-to-play and there's also Hearthstone, their collectible card game. On Steam, you have some F2P games too like Valve's Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 (another MOBA similar to LoL/HotS).

Welcome to the master race PC gaming.

PS: What are your system specs?

AMD FX(tm)-8350 Eight-Core Processor
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
24GB RAM
LG Blu Ray Drive
500GB Hard Drive (though I run all my stuff off of a 2TB External Drive)

I'm getting a AMD Radeon R9 380 next week from a buddy. Slowly but surely building up my system to become top of the line.

250GB is pretty much the minimum nowadays. Put the OS and the applications you regularly use.

500GB if you're going to be gaming a lot and/or having many games installed. I'm partial to Samsung, but if on budget, Crucial is your best bang for the buck.

I'm thinking about upgrading my RAM to 16GB and to a new NVIDIA card. I just can't decide between the GTX1060 or 1070.

Thanks. That whole build was stuff my buddy had laying around along with using sales. I think we ended up paying around $550ish for the whole build, including the stuff he had laying around that he put into it. I got the LG Blu Ray drive due to an error at Fry's Electronics. Someone had put an entire shipment of them in a spot on the shelf labeled $14.99 instead of the $84.99 or whatever it was actually supposed to be. They honored the price which is pretty cool.

Sounds like you got a great deal overall. My build is getting out of date now but I remember spending a lot more for less lol. Time for an upgrade for me too! Been ready to pull the trigger on a hardcore 4K set up for a while now but things are improving too fast to know when best to jump in!

I haven't set my eyes on 4K or anything too advanced like that. I'd be content just being able to run current gen games at a decent setting. I have a feeling 4K tech is gonna keep dropping in price. In a year or so I should be able to make the jump no problem.

Yes I think it will keep falling fast. And if you play on 1080p resolution any decent modern setup should allow you to play on high settings.

I'm definitely going with a 1070 for my new build targeted at the end of the month.

1060 is more affordable. So it depends on your budget and if you want to be future proofing to eventually do some VR for example.

Alright, I've settled on the parts for my new PC. Should be ordering these this week:
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/GG6Fm8

I wanted a Samsung M.2 SSD to go with my mini-ITX build but the 250GB one is sold out in Canada.

Ok so I have the R9 380 and it says I have 4gb of VRAM, but on the website Can I Run It it says I only have 3gb of useable VRAM. What's the deal?

That looks great.

I am starting to think about my next upgrade but probably won't pull the trigger for at least a year. Will look forward to seeing how good the successor cards to the 1070 are.

Eh that website is not always accurate. The R9 380 is still recent so the website probably doesn't fully recognize it yet so I wouldn't worry about it.

-edit- I see they're now using an application to scan your system specs. Back in the day it was in-browser with Java plugin.

Yeah, I think they'll announce the 1070 Ti and/or 1080 Ti within a year.

I'd love to know how much the 1080 Ti is going to cost. Any ideas?

It's funny. When I was first looking up the Pascal cards, I saw the GTX 1070 was around $350... Now it is certainly much more expensive.

I'm betting at least 800 USD. And the card has been (un)officially confirmed through a LinkedIn job offer.
