The last time she stepped down she was not in leadership just pushing papers

I, for one, am still waiting for the Avengers to find out Coulson is alive. if AOS is part of the MCU, which it has been stated that it is, then it is important to mee that this happens. Coulson was my reason for loving the MCU movies to begin with. I lost a tremendous amount of interest in the MCU as a whole when he died, and while I do enjoy the movies, they're just not the same without him being there. If he had such a great impact on all of the Avengers, and bringing them together (they did decide to avenge his death after all) then I dont see how he ISNT that important now. Killing him at the end of the season/series seems like a real cop out to me when there is so much potential for that character and the world AOS has created over the last 5 years. AOS has helped to expand this entire universe and I think its pretty pathetic that because a couple of producers cant seem to get along, there is less interaction between AOS and the moves than there should be.

If you're a fan of the movies, then you're a fan of the MCU so the "hes dead in the movies" excuse just doesnt work for me. This could ALL be resolved in a (funny) scene where Coulson pops in, explains that/how Fury brought him back and that hes been running SHIELD underground/working in the shadows for the last few years, but now its time for them to know since Thanos, etc... The scene would take all of a few minutes to catch up anyone that wasnt aware Coulson was brought back and hasnt been following AOS. Those of us that have would know the more in depth story behind it, and maybe it could sway some of those that havent been watching AOS to watch, if it isnt too late.

Either way, without Coulson, the movies have a different tone to them. He is/was the mesh holding the universe together and it seems like a waste of a great developed character to pass up. At least to me.

Or he could always show up in Captain Marvel in the 90s with Fury.....

And as i've mentioned, with the avengers having access to those 'wanted lists', how CAN'T they know with Phil and co being "Most wanted", that he is not dead?

I 100% agree with you.

My girlfriend joked maybe at the end of Avengers 4 the heroes celebrate defeating Thanos with dinner in a restaurant in a post credits scene and some of the Avengers notice Coulson is also there on a romantic dinner with May nearby.

Coulson hasn't been holding the MCU together for a long time in the movies now. They have their own voice at this point.

I don't feel it's necessary for the Avengers to learn of Coulson's second life. I mean I'd love to see it play out, the character's reaction and dealing with the news is an interesting story to tell and be fun as hell to see. But the story of Coulson is no longer the story of Avengers. Those paths diverge and I don't think either will be able to explore it in any real meaning depths. ABC can afford the Avengers and Infinity War and it's sequel is already jammed pact and I don't think the Russos will want to add a scene or side plot that has that level of "required viewing" Any scene like that will be the first to get cut in editing.

So I'm fine with Coulson's second life remaining undiscovered by the Avengers

I've assumed that Tony, at least, has known Coulson was alive since Winter Soldier, at least, when Natasha downloaded all of SHIELD's secrets to the internet. I doubt Captain America or Thor read cared to read through them all, but Tony could have just had a program sift through them for the interesting bits (and decrypted the encrypted ones a heck of a lot faster than Zemo...).

Plus, in that first season of SHIELD, Coulson wasn't exactly keeping a low profile, announcing who he was to foreign agents and the like, willy-nilly, so it's not like his being alive was being treated like a secret by the writers of the show (at least until his cellist girlfriend showed up and it was all 'pretend I'm dead!').

Yeah honestly how can they not know? I heard a tie in comic involving Black Widow going after the Leader implied she knows Coulson is alive.

If he dies on this show...guess what...the Avengers think he's dead...and he's dead...there you go. Rather than waste time reintroducing Coulson in a movie, I'd prefer a film actually introduce Quake or Mockingbird or any number of the vast catalog of comic characters.

I get that a tiny minority of fans want this...I just dont understand why you think that this minority should somehow get their way, which would be nothing but an inconvenience and annoyance to the majority of viewers. If people cared to see Coulson, they could tune in to ABC to see him...and most Marvel fans don't.
What's inconvenient or annoying about it? Viewers can watch Agents of SHIELD without having to pay a cost per episode as with going to the cinema to see a film (where you have to pay each time you see a film). It's therefore much easier for audiences to see Agents of SHIELD than any of the MCU films.

There would therefore be nothing wrong with a film assuming viewers have seen Agents of SHIELD. If you haven't watched it already, then just watch it on E4, or whatever channel it is on in your country.

Exactly plus a true MCU fan would watch all the films and all the shows. (Except for Inhumans of course.)

You saying that a true MCU (I'm assuming fan is meant to be there) would watch all the films and all the shows.

I mean, you're not serious, are you? I mean, one's interest in the MCU isn't diminished or even enhanced based on whether they, in addition to the films, also watch the likes of Inhumans, Runaways, and all of the shows related to the MCU.

Meant fan just corrected that.

I am completely serious I'm watched all the MCU films and shows (aside from Inhumans) like a true MCU fan would.

The inconvenience would be the screen time needed for the cameo. Casual fans are already complaining about the almost 20 year tradition of a Stan Lee cameo.

Story wise Phil Coulson was just one of many who idolized Captain America. And many more fell when Hydra emerged from S.H.I.E.L.D. Thor has bigger problems at the moment. That leaves Tony Stark, everything about him says he treats Coulson like the kid in Iron-Man 3. It is Pepper who would be glad to see him.

I guess if Disney wanted to reemphasize its ABC TV division they could have forced an appearance, but what do you gain but more sniping like happened with the Thor detour in Age Of Ultron.

But since this is a TV finale thread. If one of the Chris's or RDJ can be lured to make a cameo like Samuel L. Jackson did I would be fine with that.

Well, I suppose it's good no one here is the authority on what makes a true MCU fan. I may enjoy this universe crafted out, but I'm certainly in no rush to watch the likes of Runaways or to ever revisit Iron Fist...or even get caught up to date with SHIELD. Doesn't really make one less of a fan for that.

I liked Iron Fist myself. Never got why some hate it. Can't wait to get it on DVD to add to my collection.

Requiring people to see shows to understand movies is not a good idea, not only because not everyone has time in their lives to watch everything, but also because some of the shows don't air in certain countries, or air with a long delay between the american release and local release.

Also, no movie studio is ever going to make movies that require people to consume spin-off media in order to understand it. Could you imagine if Disney had continued the old Star Wars expanded universe and required all movie goers to read the Thrawn trilogy because "true fans" would do so anyway? Or if the BBC required people to listen to Big Finish audios to watch the show? That's a terrible decision in multiple ways and will only alienate a majority of the audience with money.

FitzSimmons to be happy together, May to happily retire, and Daisy to be killed off. (sorry)

I bet you can't. Iron Fist isn't unwatchable, but for my money it is the weakest of the Netflix shows. Watching other ones, particularly going to Punisher after it, just highlighted how bare bones Iron Fist is by comparison. It has good ideas, but poor execution.

But anyway, since this is about SHIELD, point still stands. You don't need to watch everything, including this show, to be considered a 'true' MCU fan, whatever that ultimately means.

I wouldn't go that far because the majority can't afford to see every Marvel film at the cinema, but there's certainly no excuse for television with Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. More of an excuse for Inhumans as it is on a Sky channel over here, Sky is ridiculously expensive and it's also not available on DVD/Blu-ray/Streaming.

That's just nit-picking. There's certainly nothing wrong with the Stan Lee cameo, given that it's just a tiny little Easter Egg in each film/most of the TV Shows.

Coulson is more than that, he's the one who brought the Avengers together - and he should be the one to bring them back together after Civil War.

Coulson at his heart symbolises the notion of family: that unbreakable bond between people solidified by love, care and attention. You can see that in the way he treats his fellow SHIELD agents in Agents of SHIELD, and also in the way he behaves around the Avengers in Avengers Assemble.

I would be shocked if what's likely to be Agents of SHIELD's final season doesn't end with Coulson visiting the Avengers facility and announcing the fact he's alive to Tony Stark. That would seem like the perfect way to end the show, if that can't happen in Infinity War.

Agreed.

That would be shocking and tick off fans of the show, likewise if they don't have Coulson and May get together in this season.
