So I finally got around to watching this movie. I sat down to type up my thoughts and I pretty much wrote an essay, lol. I know no one will read a post that long so I'm going to make several smaller posts over the next couple days.

Did...did this movie sort of make me like the Bayverse?

Sort of, lol.

I wouldn't defend it as a well-made piece of art, but I feel like it actually kind of succeeded as just a fun, dumb adventure. I legitimately enjoyed watching about 80% of it.

I liked the first third a lot. The junkyard stuff was great. I liked the stuff with Cade and the Autobots finding surviving Transformers and hiding them, I sort of wish the whole movie had been more of that, just them on the run from the Decepticons or something.

I also applaud the fact that they made a movie that wasn't Optimus-heavy. I'm a big Optimus fan, but he tends to dominate the story when he's around. Besides that, we've seen so much of him in this brand.

I didn't care for the knight stuff that much, I feel like it kind of dragged down the movie. The flashbacks were cool, but all the stuff in Hopkins' castle and the submarine went on a bit too long. I kind of wish they had cut some of that and made it more concise. This kind of story works better when it's an in-the-moment adventure and not a bunch of backstory.

The Last Knight isn't a "good" film, but I like it in the same way that I like something like Cars 2 or The Phantom Menace. It moves along and stays decently entertaining. I might skip over some of the stuff in England on a rewatch, but the rest is enough to make me want to rewatch it at all.

Before I just wanted a reboot of this series, but after seeing this I kind of want to see more of this world. If it were done right, I think expanding this world could be more interesting than just rebooting it with another. It kind of provides an interesting foundation for future stories, which I think was kind of the idea.

Random thought about the movie and brand in general (ties into a separate thread I'm creating):

People harp on the robots not getting enough characterization or development in these movies, but lets take a minute to look at the human characters...

In a movie with giant alien robots from space, humans are boring. Who wants to watch "high-school guy" run around trying to get "the girl" when we could be watching Optimus punch Megatron? I've always said that human characters in Transformers need to be just as wacky and weird as the robots to keep our attention.

If a human character (or a scene with a human character) isn't
(A.) immediately necessary to the robot portion of the story, and/or
(B.) wacky/creative/entertaining enough to keep or attention, I'd argue they shouldn't be in the story.

Contrary to what a lot of TF fans say about human characters, I don't dislike them at all. If done right, I think they can be just as interesting and fun to watch as the robots (plus they have the bonus of being relatable to the average viewer). I actually think humans are necessary to the brand 90% of the time, especially in something like the movieverse which is being aimed at adult viewers.

I think the problem fans have with human characters is that very little Transformers media actually gets humans right. They're often just token characters, without their presence being earned. The Last Knight comes much closer to getting humans right than a lot of other TF media I've seen.

It comes close by having human characters who are actually involved in the world of Transformers. Cade sacrificed a "normal life" by buying a junkyard to hide the Autobots, and travels with them rescuing other surviving robots. We're introduced to Izzy as someone who already has a past with the Transformers. Sir Edmund Burton is a Transformers scholar/collector. Cade's daughter decided to pursue a "normal life" at college and isn't in the movie as a result. She has no role in the story worth devoting screentime to. In addition to these characters being actively being involved in this world, they're all weird and wacky as heck.

These characters needed to be developed a lot more (some character arcs would be nice), but I feel like the movie deserves props for actually knowing what to do with it's characters.

While TLK has grown on me, it just seems like there is another movie between this and AOE, so much changed without any explanation it's jarring. Why is Case a fugitive but his daughter isn't when they were involved in the exact same events in AOE?

Why is Galvatron suddenly Megatron again, has seemingly lost the ability to split himself into pieces and is seemingly in cahoots with Quintessa despite us never seeing them meet?

I know Bay's sequels and movies in general aren't overly coherent, but that stuff just bothered me. As I said though, TALK is growing on me.

I'm a Bayformers apologist and these movies are better to watch at home, where you can just skip to the robot scenes. The big robot fights blow up my home theatre system.

I would assume it's because Cade is still actively involved with the Transformers and his daughter isn't.

Yeah, this is definitely a problem that needed to be explained.
