God bless Toho for getting back into the Godzilla game. It is a trilogy, so I imagine the sequels will keep us sated until this movie and G v KK.

Hell, with Rampage and Pac Rim 2 next year, a lot of kaiju next year.

The rebirth of Tokusatsu properties in the mainstream brings joy to my heart. Godzilla, Pac Rim, Kong, Power Rangers, Rampage and so on.

I wonder if Godzilla in part 2 will be a "superhero" or if it's him just fighting the other three over a turf thing?
He seemed pretty heroic to me in the first one, so I imagine he will have minor scraps with mothra and rodan at first, but then ghidorah shows up.
Who knows tho. It could just be a free for all.

I wonder if Kong will show up in some capacity?

Either he's gonna be mentioned, pop up at the very end or in an end credits scene (if they do one for it).

I really don't see why people call Legendary Goji a "hero". Need I remind you the hundreds of people he killed just from emerging in Hawaii? He doesn't really give a crap about humans, so I'd say he's an anti-hero at best.

It depends on much they're going to pull from the Ghirdorah, The Three Headed Monster. Which had Mothra try to convince Rodan and Godzilla to fight Ghidorah. Goji and Rodan basically told Mothra that humans can go screw themselves but relented in the end.

From the cave paintings and the viral marketing it seems to indicate that Godzilla and Ghidorah are ancient enemies. And this is just their latest throw down.

A Clash of Kings if you will

Precisely, so I don't get some fan arguments that say he's a hero in G14.

It's pretty much a given that in some form or another, Kong will very briefly feature in GvK.

Because as discordant and nonsensical as it is, that's the not e the film tries to end on with San Francisco news running healinrs like "Savior of our City" etc. Drspit the first act and all of the marketing, the film ultimately tried to have a 70s Godzilla or 90s gamera ending and it just doesn't fit.

Not to mention Gareth Edwards and the first teaser were totally misleading about Godzilla being humanity's punishment for nuclear weapons and what we've done to the environment.

Which is why I'm curious to see what kind of tone Doughterty will go with.

Because he was the hero. The screen even showed him saying "king of the monsters and saviour of the city." The MUTO were the ones causing the most of the destruction. Godzilla dispatched them and went on his way. He wasn't trying to wreck the cities and eat the nuclear weapons. He just wanted to eliminate the MUTOs.

From a narrative standpoint, Godzilla was the hero monster.

He was the lesser of two evils, a force of nature. He didn't rise up from the depths of the sea with the intention of saving humanity's butt. He couldn't give less of a crap about us. He looks to us humans like we do to ants, utterly insignificant and not too worthy of attention. He doesn't care if he kills people and destroys cities along his path, just as long as he manages to dispatch the MUTOs. He ultimately rose to restore balance to the planet's nature like Serizawa stated, to protect what he deemed was his territory, but not for our sake. Plus, the MUTOs were kinda sorta responsible for the demise of his species, so there's gonna be some personal vendetta there.

He's not a hero in the traditional sense. An anti-hero, yes, but not a full-on hero imo. That being said, I hated the "Savior Of Our City" headline at the end.

No, but their goals were basically aligned. He was the hero monster by default, but the hero monster nonetheless.

He could have laid waste to san francisco easily, but he didn't.
He also ( to me ) seemed to save ford's behind at the end, now you could argue G was just trying to stop the muto from getting the nuke, but it certainly seemed like he knew he was saving him.
But, I agree, antihero is a better term. He did kill folks in hawaii by just appearing, but he didn't go all postal and wipe everything out by using his radiation blasts or intentionally knocking down buildings either.
