Now that's how you start off a new season

Really happy that they are embracing the crass and dark humor bits that made me love the comics when it came to small things such as Cassidy's dialogue about how skin moisturizer is created and how Tulip had to siphon for gas.

Also, I know we are getting more of the Saint of Killers and the introduction of Herr Starr and the Grail this season but does anybody else think that we'll be seeing Marie L'Angell this season after hearing Jesse's preacher friend Mike talk about Jesse's parents in this episode?

Personally, I'm a wee bit relieved that American Gods and Silicon Valley have finished up because Sundays were becoming so much to keep track of with that, Twin Peaks and now Preacher returning.

I LOVE how they foreshadowed that with the shot of Jesse, and the Fishtank with the treasure chest burping bubbles in the background. Rewatched the episode this morning, probably my favorite start to a AMC season ever.

Nice to have Fiore back and I could do with an entire episode of him and Cassidy doing drugs and making their expanding fort.

Also, been awhile since watching the first season, so I must've forgotten or missed that Tulip didn't know what happened to the town.

Based on the first two episodes, this season's structure seems to be much better.

I fully agree. Getting them out of Annville has been a huge benefit. It really allows the show to stretch its legs.

I still can't get over Jesse being an awful person.

That scene at Minister Mike's place foreshadowed Jesse's dark past. The fish tank was an Easter egg and as well as the name of the family Tulip mentioned while looking through the photo album.

He's pretty awful in the comics as well. In the comics he used genesis and told Eugene's father to **** himself. The command was a bit literal so the sheriff castrated himself and did what Jesse said.

Jesse in the comics a moral code. One not to dissimilar to what you'd expect from the Duke, except not racist. Yeah, he told Eugene's awful father to go F himself. He's also the kind of guy who sticks up for the little guy and wouldn't consider calling the Saint to casino so he can slaughter a ton of innocent people as a threat. He wasn't a miserable drunk who took human life for granted.

The show characterization of Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy are nothing like the comics.

This is gonna be one of those perception things, apparently. Heard a couple people say the comic and show are so different, I don't really see that being very true (especially with Cassidy), but I grasp it's a first time live adoption. So maybe I'm giving them a lot of slack. But I think the character essentials are still here.

Cassidy is way more of a nice, fun guy on the show. In the comics, he is much more of a jerk who wouldn't be portrayed as the funny, awkward, harmless stoner friend. I like show Cassidy, but he shouldn't have a "heart of gold".

Show Jesse would be something Jody would to create. Hell, he'd be Jody's friend. This is the problem with making show Jesse's father a not so good man. He didn't have that influence to teach him how to be a good man, no matter what comes his way.

Anyone else getting episode 3 unavailable to stream on AMC Roku?

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
Well, we have not seen show Jody yet, and aside from some clips of him with Jesse, we don't see much of his father, just with Odin and some ther bits. the biggest departure is his was a Preacher. Maybe we just haven't seen the Marine part. Maybe they are doing the Mom stuff differently. Jesse wasn't a conventional Holy Man in the books, I see that reflected here.

His father was one of those religious people who justify beating their kids because they are religious. That is a far cry from his father in the books.

I'll admit that this season has been leaps and bounds better than last season. There are moments where the shaky foundation of the 1st season slips through and the characterization is still off for Jesse and Cassidy. Tulip is more "on point" now than ever. It's definitely more entertaining and *a little* more inline with the books.

All that said, it's still better to watch and realize that this is less a adaption and more "hey, let's take the general premise of the book and create something new".

Is there a specific flashback you are referencing? I don't remember seeing him beat/ abuse Jesse.

I think in one of the episodes there was a flashback where we see that John is one of those old school "Spare the rod" type of parent when it comes to discipline.

Given that will be pointless given the "Moms Family" thing would make that repetitive (and lightweight), and that I don't remember anything like that happening in season 1, can you reference the specific episode?

Well, that was a surprise ending there. Also, there's something cathartic about watching a spineless Hitler get beaten up by other inmates in Hell.
