Devil May Cry 5 Inside Xbox: E3 2018 Special gameplay and director interview

The E3 2018 edition of Inside Xbox featured a new clip of Devil May Cry 5 featuring previously unseen gameplay and an interview with director Hideaki Itsuno.

Here is Itsuno’s full transcript:

Quote:
“This is a direct sequel to Devil May Cry 4. It takes place several years after Devil May Cry 4 and Nero has been gifted the neon ‘Devil May Cry’ sign of Dante, which is actually a detail that’s not mentioned in the game, but in a novelization. Nero uses it to set up his own mobile demon-hunting agency, and that’s how our story begins.

“You’ll find that there’s a lot of new stuff. But what we can talk about specifically is Nero’s new weaponized robotic arm, which he uses for hunting demons, that we call ‘Devil Breaker.’ You’ll be able to catch a couple of hints as to what they’ll be capable of if you pay careful attention to the gameplay of the trailer, but you can look forward to hearing more details at Gamescom.

“It’s been 10 years since Devil May Cry 4, so my boss came to me and said that in order to keep it relevant for today, we’ll need to make something that you can take one glance at and know that it’s quality. So we chose to make it with a photorealistic graphic style. We found, though, that without the proper care, photorealism combined with gaming animation can lead to, what I refer to as, an uncanny valley of action. So we put a lot of effort in to ensure that the game would still play with that tight Capcom play control, but still feel at home with realistic graphics. We’d love for fans to pay careful attention to how that feels.

“After making Devil May Cry 4, we planned on going right into making the Special Edition, but that fell through at the time. We eventually did follow through with that three years ago, by the way. And at that point, lots of the dev members wanted to try their hand at making a new one, so that’s what I’m most excited about. Now we get to make the game that we wanted to make for 10 years.”

There were a few light novels released written at various points. The first one was written to be a prequel to the original game partially based on Kamiya's ideas for what Dante's backstory would be ...it doesn't really jive well with the backstory DMC3 established, so it's non-canon but it's kind of vaguely been referenced in the later games and anime as a source of ideas, like Dante having an alias called "Tony Redgrave" and now Nell Goldstein, who was the one who gave him the guns in that novel. Second novel is kind of more of a tie in with DMC2, and whether it's still canon or not is vague.

They did a novelisation of DMC4 a few years ago from one of the writers of the game, and it's basically the story with some added backstory and context. It went into more detail about Virgil and Nero's possible relationship. I don't believe it's been officially released in English, but there's a few fan translations floating around.

Basically it's not necessarily hard canon, but they do seem to be drawing some ideas from it.

So I found like a 6 min version of Nero's theme. I rather love it.

One minor criticism that i have is that i prefer the original Devil Bringer arm design in DMC4

To the new look in DMCV

You know, I am almost not bothered by it. When you think about it, Dante's Devil Trigger looked different in every single game, for no reason. But yeah, Nero's old arm looked better.

The new devil bringer arm, looks more like the beginning stage of his transformation, and the one in DMC4 looks like the completed stage.

I obviously am very happy that we finally have a new DMC game (and not a DmC game altough in the end I enjoyed the reboot for the most part) but that trailer really felt DmC-ish. Paint Nero's hair jet black and he might as well be nuDante I guess they are trying to please the old fans while trying to appeal to new ones so they don't want to make it too anime inspired.

And I think it's funny that after 10 years we can't get a proper Dante led story. Don't get me wrong, I like Nero. But it's a little crazy that real Dante hasn't had his own game since 2005.

Dante should have been the lead in this.

Honestly, Nero reminds me more of the Scalebound protagonist. Though I did fear we'd be dealing with reboot Dante when the trailer started, because of the short hair and the realistic style.

But when you put them next to each other, they honestly look nothing alike. Even the short hair style is completely different.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

I wish they would have went with the FFXV direction of making things realistic looking, while still giving characters more Anime like features, so the characters are instantly recognizable, instead of scanning actual models/actors, but it's a minimal issue I can deal with. I agree that it's probably their way of making the game appeal to the new fans as well, and honestly, this is what DmC should have been in the first place. A new art style, but keeping the DMC lore intact, instead of wiping it completely clean with a reboot.

As for Dante, I guess they simply have no idea in what direction to take him. His story has basically been told. His family is dead, he avenged his mother's murder by killing Mundus. All he does every day is basically eat Pizza and kill stray Demons for money. Plus, he's overpowered as ****. I don't say I wouldn't want to see him to be a lead in a DMC game again, but I guess the guys in charge think focusing on Nero's story will make for a better game. Especially with Vergil back and him supposedly being Nero's dad and all.

Tbh I think a lot of the initial kneejerk reaction is from the short hair. Aesthetically, aside from the hair, I see nothing alike from the 2 styles. DmC was not even that realistic looking imo. It was a lot of grunge, everything looked muddy and dirty, and there's some filter that tries to do a cheap imitation of the brush stroke effects of SF4 to make the whole look look like graffiti, like the logo, because it's edgy.

For DMC5, right when the neon light sign lit up, I knew instantly this was back to OG. I still see some anime influences even though it's more realistic looking now because it's the natural progression in terms of graphical style across every game that goes for photorealism. Nero himself looks pretty close to the photorealistic render of Vergil's character art during DMC3. The art style is just cleaner, colors pop more, and there's just a certain DMC sass to it. I mean just look at that title logo. That's some god tier level **** right there.

I'm fine with them continuing the Nero/Virgil narrative. Plus, if this is indeed Post-DMC2 as has been suggested, then it makes sense for Dante to be absent for at least a portion of the story.

I like playing as Nero, his arm reminds me of that of Jaque in Onimusha 3.
