Thanks for the Slipknot reminder. I recommend All Hope Is Gone for your first Slipknot album, DeadPres.

As for FFDP, I was a big fan until that American Capitalist album. WTF was that?

Anyone heard of Suns of the Tundra? Progressive Rock/Metal band from England with connections to Tool.

"Made of Stone" (single song)

"Tunguska" (full 2006 album)
VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Basically; Tool's bassist, Justin Chancellor, used to be in this band in the early '90's when they were called Peach (they actually toured with Tool at one point), but they broke up around '95 and Chancellor joined Tool.

Fast-forward a few years and there's renewed interest in Peach thanks to Tool covering a couple of their songs live in '98 ("You Lied", which appeared on Tools 2000 "Salival" release, and "Spasm").

So Peach reissue their 1993 album "Giving Birth to a Stone" in 2000 (complete with new cover art by Tool's guitarist Adam Jones).

They then reform as Suns of the Tundra, releasing a self-titled album in 2004, then "Tunguska" (posted above) in '2006, and an EP in 2009 called "Illuminate".

Since then they've been working on a double album/concept album based around a BBC documentary about Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton and his early-1900's expeditions to the South Pole. That should hopefully be out in the next few months.

I've really gotten into these guys over the last few months and think they deserve a hell of a lot more attention, so check 'em out (especially if you like Tool)!

Cool. I've given Peach's album a few listens, I gotta say, their work as Suns of the Tundra is waaaay better, particularly Tunguska. They've really improved as songwriters from Peach through the 2004 SotT albm and then Tunguska & Illuminate.

Really looking forward to their next release "Bones of Brave Ships".

Fleshing itself out to be a fairly standout year for metal music so far with powerful releases from Arkona, Agalloch, Elvenking, Inanimate Existence, Falconer, Equilibrium, Disforia, Ifing, Dead Congregation, Epica, Idylls, Sinbreed, Morbus Chron, Mayan, Epitimia, Woods of Desolation, Stormwarrior, Thyrien, and many others. I’m particularly excited about what the rest of the year has in store for the genre and there’s still a lot of records I haven’t gotten around to yet that I have a feeling are going to be pretty great (Evergrey’s “Hymns for the Broken”, Blut aus Nord’s “Memoria Vetusta III”, etc.)

Looks like Slipknot is gonna have the #1 album. And the media acts like rock is dead.

Sure, no probs. Quite a lot of varied stuff to be honest, when I was like 13/14 I was listening to Linkin Park/Metallica and other "softer" stuff, but when I hit my late teens I wanted to educate myself on the various sub-genres of metal and tried to experiment with the "pioneers" or standout acts in the main genres. Besides the classics for old school NWOBHM (Priest, Maiden, etc) and the Thrash stalwarts I'd say the following would be what I enjoy/listen to most:

Death Metal (Terrible genre for the most part):

Death (Schuldiner is a genius, no lie, my favorite band hands down)
Nile (Interesting lyrical themes)
Possessed (More traditional, not as outlandish as tripe like Cannibal Corpse, no offense to CC fans)
Sinister

Black Metal (Can't stand the Satanic themes in most bands, so I avoid those):

Celtic Frost (Most of it)
Wolves in the Throne Room

Progressive (Some metalcore):

Opeth
Between the Buried and Me
Burst
Dream Theater
Mastodon (Sludge...but meh prog it is)
Neurosis
Veil of Maya

Melodeath:

In Flames
Dark Tranquility
Scar Symmetry
Children of Bodom (Power Metal too I suppose)

Post-Hardcore/Metalcore/ambiguous genre bands:

Born of Osiris
Ice Nine Kills
Memphis May Fire
A Skylit Drive
Thrice
Silverstein
Unearth
Saosin
Architects
Phinehas
Parkway Drive
August Burns Red
Heaven Shall Burn
Kingdom of Giants
The Ghost Inside

And then some other notable mentions like Paradise Lost, Control Denied (Schuldiner's melodic/power metal band he founded just prior to his passing), Gojira. Sorry, obscenely long post, basically just puked out the most listened to bands on my iPod, but yeah I'd say that's what comprises the majority of my metal and its divergent genres collection.

Edit: I forgot Cynic, because I'm a heathen, one of the best progressive metal/rock bands.

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Broaden your horizons ladies and gents. Put a bowl under your chin, your face might be spilling into it at about 2:52.

Opeth is really, really great. Good for general listening, some of the harsher stuff I can't binge on for too long, but Opeth is good at almost any time. Dream Theater's on a different level of technicality, great band. If you're into Opeth I'd recommend Born of Osiris (and maybe Burst) for progressive vibes and Paradise Lost for the more doomy aspects
