I still don't get why they had an actor do mocap work for a dragon. This must be the first time a movie has done this for a creature that isn't humanoid.

Eh, I think that, even if they don't use his performance as the basis of the animation, they can at least end up using it (or parts of it) as more of a reference guide to maybe insert some of BC's personality into the character (i.e. the way his lip might curl when he says certain words, the way he might furrow his brow or shift his eyes).

I'm sure when DoS comes out on home release (and the EE for certain) they'll show us how they went about designing Smaug and exactly why or how they opted to utilize BC's mocap.

As a descendant of the Dragonborn, Benedict insisted on it.

I think Benedict was going to do only voice work on Smaug and the Necromancer, but he want it to try the mo-cap stuff when he was in NZ so they did

Quote:
To inhabit the character for “The Desolation of Smaug,” which is scheduled for a Dec. 13 release, Cumberbatch used Smaug-like powers of persuasion to convince director Jackson that he should do motion capture in addition to voiceover work. As he tells it, the conversation went like this:

“He wasn’t that in need of it but he said, ‘do you want to do it?’

I said, ‘Absolutely, I do. That’s the great appeal, trying to bring this –’

He said, ‘But–’

I went, ‘I know what you’re going to say: I’m a biped mammal, I’m not a serpent with tiny claws or legs. I don’t have a tail, I can’t breathe fire or fly, and the rest of the things that aren’t dragonlike about me. But I do think in my imagination I’ve got something which might at least push the WETA animation into a direction.’

He went, ‘Come down and play.’

So that was an amazing thing, I’d never been so free. You feel like a tit when you walk onto the stage and there are dots all over your face and your body, but the motion-capture volumes pick up every motion and turn it into an avatar.”

Cumberbatch says he’s inspired by, and indebted to, his father in coming to play Smaug, calling it “a beautiful full circle.”

If Daniel Day Lewis was playing Smaug, he would live underground with lizards for 5 years to research the role, then have a tail and wings surgically attached to his body as part of his method.

But, I guess that hack Cumberbatch didn't want to put in the requisite effort!

Demosthenes for TheOneRing.Net has heard the full soundtrack and wrote a very good review of it for that site. He basically says that on a stand-alone level the score is good but not great by Shore's standards until you get to Disc 2 and Smaug's theme elevates the whole soundtrack to another level.

also, WaterTower music now has 90-second samples of all the tracks on their site and you can do a SoundCloud stream, too. here were my impressions of the longer excerpts which i posted on the tORN boards:

30 and 60 second excerpts don't do much justice to this score. now, with a minute and a half for each track, i feel like this is the first time that we're getting more of a sense of what Shore was going for. from what i can tell, this is an extremely subtle and moody score in the first half. themes and motifs are there but presented and interwoven very delicately. there is an understated sense of foreboding which i think works quite well considering what this film is building towards...every time the Shire/Hobbit theme appears it's a welcome reprieve from the effective gloom. not every track stands great on its own (at least in these sample forms) but most of the music does sound like it should accompany the film quite well. the spider sequence is one of my favorite parts in the book and one of my most anticipated parts in all of the Hobbit movies, and from what i can hear of that part of the soundtrack, it sounds like Shore brought the goods, tweaking the way he approached Shelob's scenes in RotK (orchestral horror music with jolts and wriggles) to make it work for a multitude of Shelob's little cousins.

then, as Demosthenes' review of the full soundtrack so astutely pointed out, Smaug's theme really seems to take over the second half of the soundtrack and ramps up the tension. and Demos didn't over-sell Smaug's theme one bit. it is inspired, magnificent work. with the gamelan elements and the basic figure of the notes it gives a sense of "other"-ness to Smaug, which i think is very appropriate cuz he feels like a somewhat singular creature in the book and in Tolkien canon, and musically also speaks to Smaug's sinister cunning, his great power, and to the dread he invokes.

i did not care for the shorter excerpts of "My Armor is Iron" and so was initially disappointed because it came off a bit like generic action climax music...but the 90 seconds here give you a much better feel for the track's actual progression and the way it builds into what's quite a beautiful piece harmonically, and the melodic reprise before the finish is something else.

then, i may be in the minority, but i think "I See Fire" if my favorite LotR/Hobbit credits song yet. great lyrics and while the chorus isn't my favorite thing ever it's still pretty good...but it's really that first verse that sells me entirely on the song. it is beautifully melancholy with a harmony from Sheeran that i can't get enough of, and i think it will serve as a wonderful way to transition from the dramatic end of DoS into the credits. it also doesn't hurt from a promotional standpoint and i think the song is a lock for a "Best Original Song" Oscar nom (though no doubt Frozen will take home the award). then, as so many have pointed out, "Beyond the Forest" is just gorgeous and should be a great way to close out the credits, hopefully it's used as such (with the change from AUJ's released soundtrack to how it was used in the film, it's very difficult to say what we will or won't be hearing in the movie).

Well, Desolation of Smaug is thankfully shorter than the first pic, but not by much... about 7 minutes shorter.

http://variety.com/2013/film/news/ho...rs-1200893302/

Official running time, sans previews, is 2 hours and 40 minutes. Maybe when the final film rolls along, it'll be 135 minutes long!

If PJ shot on film, I would almost believe that he feels the need to use up every roll.
