The thing is that both of these actors CAN act, but for some reason they just suck in these roles.

Monaghan is great on Gotham. That show is so much fun if you don't take it too seriously.

Serious or not, I don't want to cringe every two seconds.

its about the script/director imo jared leto would of made an amazing joker with different direction/script i have seen enough of his work to know he can disappear in a role and immerse himself to a serious degree like how he did in dallas buyers club

You guys are missing out! I suspect the show will gain more fans once it’s over. We really needed Gotham to temporarily save us from how bad things were for Batman on the cinematic side. It’s very comparable to Smallville. An Elseworlds tale on tv that holds us over while the cinematic side of things flounders.

The Bruce and Jeremiah scene is no less serious than the majority of Joker episodes in Batman The Animated Series.

That Hashtag Show revealed that the crew for the Joker movie is being assembled.

Quote:
As Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment shuffle the board under the supervision of new DC-based films President Walter Hamada, they have decided to move ahead on one project: Todd Phillips’ Untitled Joker origin story, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime. The film is set to take part in a sort of Elseworlds universe, apart from the continuity of the existing Justice League universe that began with Man of Steel, giving Phillips complete freedom on the project. Now, thanks to a source with knowledge of the production, we have some info on the crew that Phillips has assembled to help him bring this unique vision to life.

It was recently reported by Omega Underground that production would begin this fall and we can confirm that DC is targeting a September start, in New York, with filming expected to wrap in before the holiday season begins in mid-December. With the start date just a few months off, Phillips will likely be working closely alongside his casting director, Shayna Markowitz (Ocean’s 8), to fill key roles over the next month or two. While the project remains officially untitled, it’s being developed under the working title Romeo.

Mark Scoon will serve as the executive in charge of production, a role he has filled on both Wonder Woman films, overseeing Phillips, who wrote the screenplay and will also serve as one of the film’s producers. According to our source, Phillips has added cinematographer Lawrence Sher, who is currently in post-production on Godzilla: King of Monsters, and worked with Phillips on the Hangover trilogy. Mark Friedberg (Noah) will serve as the film’s production designer, working with Phillips to create the film’s visual aesthetics, and will also work alongside costume designer Mark Bridges (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Italian Job).

That Hashtag Show also has character breakdowns for the film.

Quote:
The Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker solo film has generated a lot of buzz since it was first announced last year and now, under the supervision of new DC Films head exec Walter Hamada, has become a priority at Warner Bros. Filming will begin this September, under the supervision of writer/director/producer Todd Phillips. The film, which will take place in an Elseworlds-esque universe under a separate banner from the existing DC films, has been a bit of a mystery…until now. The Joker movie is one of the hottest projects in development right now and we have some info on it that you won’t find anywhere else.

According to our source, not only will this film stand firmly outside the existing DC films’ continuity, but it may also be creating an entirely new Joker mythology, apart from DC Comics. As Todd Phillips and casting director Shayna Markowitz approach the tentative September start of production, they are looking to assemble a cast of characters that doesn’t exactly fit the bill of anyone recognizable from the DC Comics source material. Below, we have descriptions for 8 characters set to support the arc of Joaquin Phoenix as he becomes the Joker.

PENNY

Supporting Female (60-74) Caucasian. Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself. But recently her health has started failing, and she’s nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home. She’s obsessed with her former employer and can’t believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this…

Could this be the mother of the Joker? She’s certainly the right age range, with Phoenix playing a 35-40 year old version of the Clown Prince of Crime. If this is his mother and, if his transition to the Joker is incited by her death, it could represent an interesting parallel that Phillips is willing to draw between the Joker and Batman. We do know that Penny will have struggled with mental illness and that they will also be looking to cast a younger actress, in her late 20s, to play an earlier version of Penny.

SOPHIE DUMOND

Supporting female (27-34) to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She’s just trying to catch a break..

Sophie could represent a potential love interest for Phoenix’s Joker or a potential partner in crime…or both. Her four year old daughter, Gigi, will also play a small role in the film.

MURRAY FRANKLIN

Male (65-75) Caucasian

While no further description was given to us about this character, we are told the role is a very strong supporting one and that Phillips, along with co-producer Martin Scorsese, may be targeting Hollywood legend Robert DeNiro for the role. Scorsese and DeNiro have been frequent collaborators since 1973’s Mean Streets, with iconic films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino on their shared resumes.

RANDALL

Supporting Male (40-59)Caucasian. Thinks he’s the wisest and most knowledgeable person in any room he’s in, tries to present himself as a mentor to everybody, but is really just looking out for himself, burly.

GARY

Supporting Male (30-49) any ethnicity to play a dwarf; Randall’s best friend, he’s good-natured and a buddy to his colleagues at work, one of the only decent people in the whole movie.

Randall and Gary are obviously some sort of team and while we don’t know where they work together (a hotel, a mental hospital, a bank and a “Good Morning” talk show are among the set pieces being designed for the film), their relationship will likely come into play at some point.

HOYT VAUGHN

Supporting Male (50-69) any ethnicity the old-school manager of hotel staff. He’s seen it all, and finds it difficult to give a **** about much of anything anymore

DETECTIVE GARRITY

Supporting Male (50-59) any ethnicity. Police Detective in a city on the brink; a by-the-book cop, worn down by all his years on the force. He doesn’t care about or take into consideration any of the societal or political ramifications of his cases.

DETECTIVE BURKE

Supporting Male (30-39) any ethnicity. A Police Detective and Garrity’s partner; he’s an *******, who gets off by being in a position of authority. Being a cop is how he defines himself.

You can’t be the Joker if you’re not out murdering people and breaking the law, so Garrity and Burke, who sound like they work for a city an awful lot like Gotham, will probably be on the case and, potentially, among the Joker’s victims.

These are just a handful of the dozens of new characters that Phillips will bring to life when the Untitled Joker film hits theaters next year. From what we’ve given you, what can you glean about the film’s plot? Let us know in the comments!

De Niro would be an amazing get, but unlikely. Still, if Scorsese is still producing this, hmm.

Hate to say it, but DeNiro doing any one of these CBMs doesn’t get me nearly as excited as it should. Unless the likes of Marty are directly involved with this involvement, I can’t help but feel it’s a simple cash grab.

Yeah DeNiro has lent himself to some truly awful movies in the last few years.

I don't care if De Niro is in this.

Are they going to adapt "one bad day" origin and how likely Batman will appear in the film? Hard to imagine an origin story for Joker without Batman being at least a silhouette in the background.

If those casting call rumours are true, i bet this will be a totally humanized realistic incarnation of the Joker so much so that it will be not really that identical to the character.

I'm going to bet he is a normal criminal who murders people but laughs ocassionally. He wont have green hair or permeawhite skin. No mouth scars or lipstick.

Most likely will be like how they showed Jerome (in appearance). He looks very human just his behavior thats a bit different.

There probably isn't going to be a batman in this. I will bet this won't even be called The Joker or even have Joker in the title. Probably won't be even marketed as a DC film either. It will be marketed and made like a scorcese crime film.

So I feel like no one should really expect a full on comicbook joker

Seems incredibly premature to make such assumptions.

Besides, the whole reason they had to do that gimmicky **** with Jerome/Jeremiah is because WB didn't want them using The Joker's name and image in the show. Presumably because they are planning to use it themselves sooner rather than later.

The thing is... Cameron is in his early twenties and is SUPPOSED to be playing a younger version of the character. Leto has no excuse since he's in his damn 40s...

Take this with a huge grain of salt, but Mark Hughes said this:

Since it's been misunderstood, let me be clear: I spoke to a few people who were part of or heard a/b convos re: if Joker solo movie is great & a hit, & if Batman movie is great & a hit, then down the road it's a good idea to consider merging them as part of the same bat-world.
https://mobile.twitter.com/markhughe...55078685888512

I'll be very surprised if this turns out to be true, but for the moment, I'm skeptical.

The main thing that makes me doubt this is the thing that came about before about this being set in the 80’s

Maybe that will turn out to be bs

If true, I don't like the sound of it. The thing that makes me think its possible, is that it sounds like the type of thing WB would want to happen.

In other words, it sounds consistent with the WB type meddling we've seen up until now with their films.

If Reeve wants it , fair enough, but I'm skeptical he'd want The Batman to be pigeonhole to another director and writers vision of Joker, Gotham city, and time frame. It doesn't scream the creative freedom that Reeves wanted with his film imo.
