The idea of Wolverine needing a mask at all, really doesn't make sense. He isn't hiding his identity. His mask doesn't prove to be something that protects him from attacks.
The most realistic outtake on his look in the comics is from his hairy chest and leather outfit from Morrison's New X-Men book.

That looks like it might have a decent chance of working. Though I'd maybe give it more the look of this, but toned down a bit. I really just mean the outline of the fins here.
