It's 2013 and look how hard it still is for movies to find and cast African-American actresses in leading roles - think about how hard it was in 2000. Even if you don't like her in the role she certainly was a trailblazer within the superhero realm.

As someone already pointed out, hindsight is always 20/20.
This. It's much easier for African American men, because every movie that has an African American as a lead usually has Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Jamie Foxx, Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson. Plus you have some excellent supporting actors like Terrance Howard, Don Cheadle (he has yet to prove that he can lead a major blockbuster) and Forrest Whitaker (his lead roles have been smaller fare compared to Smith and Washington) and Anthony Mackie and Djimon Hounsou. Also names like Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs and Terry Crews. Also fast risers such as Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman.

Plus the Black British invasion of Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor and David Oyelowo. Let's not forget the Black French Actor, Omar Sy and this being his first English language film. Whether or not he'll have the same success as Elba and Ejiofor over here remains to be seen. The successes of Elba and Ejiofor could cause more Black British actors to come over here and try. Oyelowo hasn't had the acclaim that Elba and Ejiofor have been getting this year, but his career in America hasn't been as long as Elba's or Ejiofor's.

The Black women is much harder I think, but they have seen improvement. Over the last few years, we've seen Viola Davis, Zoe Saldana and Kerry Washington become A-Listers. Also names such as Rosario Dawson and Paula Patton. We've also seen the re-emergence of Angela Bassett (she hasn't gone anywhere and has been steadily working, but she's on a hit TV show) and a fast riser in Sleepy Hollow's Nicole Beharie and "wait and see" in Quvenzhane Wallis. But there are still issues over African American women in the movies. Look at the recent controversy over zero black women on Saturday Night Live. Despite her emergence, Davis has yet to prove she can headline a major movie and Washington's success comes from TV. It's no longer just Halle though.

The British invasion isn't strong, with mainly Naomie Harris, Thandie Newton, Carmen Ejogo and Sophie Okenedo. With the exception of Harris though none of the Black British women have received the same acclaim that Elba and Ejiofor have been getting. The French have no Black Female Actress counterpart that can make a splash over here like Juliet Binoche and Marion Cotillard have done.

It might have given it a bit more credibility, yes. But Bassett is 10 years older than the other key cast members, and she is short and of quite a solid build. Ideal for strutting about as Tina Turner, not totally convinced she would be a good Storm.

Show me an X-Men comic where Mystique is the leader and walks round all day as a bored blonde
